The Pharisees went off and made a plan to trap Jesus
with questions. Then they sent him some of their
disciples and some members of Herod’s party.
“Teacher,” they said, “we know that you tell the truth.
You teach the truth about Go’s will for people, without
worrying about what other think, because you pay no
attention to anyone’s status. Tell us then what do you
think? It is against our Law to pay the taxes to the
Roman Emperor, or not?
Jesus was aware of their evil plan, so he said, “You
hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me? Show me
the coins for paying the tax!” Then they brought the
coin, and he asked them, “Whose face and name are
these?” “The Emperor’s,” they answered. So Jesus
said to them, “Well, then, pay to the Emperor what
belongs to the Emperor, and pay to God what belongs
to God.” Matthew 22:15-21

Years ago I had the privilege to travel to China and visit
many historical sites such as the Great Wall. As my
group of traveling companions gathered at the end of the
day and exited towards the bus we walked by an elderly
beggar asking for some change as he rattled the can he
was holding in his hand. Our guide and interpreter
asked that we avoid the beggars’ and look the other way
when we would approach them. As instructed our group
walked by this man. I felt terrible and my heart was
telling me to turn around and share/give of my

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / VIGESIMO NOVENO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO
STEWARDSHIP WORD OF WISDOM
In today’s Gospel we hear proclaimed a profound
teaching by Jesus on stewardship. What belongs
to Caesar? What belongs to God? Christian
stewards recognize that everything they have
belongs to God. God created them, and God has
claims on every part of their existence. They also
realize that the sovereign is an institution whose
nature and purpose is to promote the common good and
protect the welfare of its citizenry. As long as it accomplishes
this mission while treating every single person with deep
respect, justice and compassion, it merits the steward’s
support and cooperation. Christian stewards know what
belongs to the Lord, and they are better citizens when they
live their lives according to His Gospel.
corresponsabilidad. Que pertenece a César? Que
pertenece a Dios?
