INTRODUCCIÓ GENERAL A LA MATÈRIA I RECOMANACIONS DE CONEIXEMENTS PREVIS // GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE SUBJECT AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: This subject is a follow-up to the “North American Literature 1” course done in the fourth year. It is highly recommended that students who register for this course have passed the previous one, or at least have read the early texts and assimilated the theoretical and critical concepts required to understand the antecedents and evolution of U.S. literature. 2. OBJECTIUS GENERALS // GENERAL OBJECTIVE: The aim of this course is to continue the process of study that the student began in the “North American Literature 1” course, combining reading, discussion and research, with a special emphasis on independent learning. The focus here will be on 20th-century works. By the end of the year, the student should be able to recognize the main characteristics of the movements, authors, and texts studied in their context and in relation to historical and current events, noticing the evolution in form and content from the previous North American materials seen. S/he should be capable of going further in the use of the tools of Angloamerican literary criticism that s/he is already familiar with, as well as of adding some new concepts applicable to contemporary writings. Upon completion of the course, the student should also be able to conduct basic research in contemporary literature and to perform independent learning tasks (filling out reading cards, preparing for the discussion of articles, etc.). 3. ESTRUCTURA DELS CONTINGUTS DE L’ASSIGNATURA STRUCTURE: a. Teòrics // theory: The material is structured in 7 units: // CONTENT 1. Introduction: The 20th-century U.S. and its Literary Production 2. North American Modernism: Poetry and Prose 3. The Birth and Growth of Modern American Theatre 4. Neo-realism and the Narratives of the Great Depression 5. The 1950s: Consumerism and Counter-Cultural Tendencies 6. The Civil Rights Movement: Minority Voices 7. Coming to Terms with the War: Vietnam Narratives 8. Postmodernism, Multiculturalism, and Literature at the Turn of the Century b. Pràctics // practice: Commentaries and other practical tasks will be combined with theoretical expositions and other activities throughout the year. 1 4. 5. METODOLOGIA DE TREBALL DE L’ASSIGNATURA // METHODOLOGY: a. Teòrica // theory: The teacher’s theoretical expositions will alternate with presentations by students, guided research and annotated reading of articles and other documents relevant to each unit. b. Pràctica // practice: Students will be required to analyze and comment on primary and secondary texts, to participate in workshop-format sessions, debates, etc., to enhance their learning and encourage independence and critical thought. ELEMENTS I CRITERIS D’AVALUACIÓ // ASSESSMENT: Students will be offered two options at the beginning of the course: 1. An exhaustive, final, written exam in June, including theoretical questions to develop in essay form and texts for full commentary and analysis (50%) + an essay on one of the movements/authors/texts studied (40%) + coursework to be handed in once a month (10%). 2. An ongoing project including a course diary (20%), research feedback worksheets to be handed in once a month (30%), a complete commentary of a selected extract (20%) and a final 30-minute oral presentation (30%).
