Lo es todo en el baloncesto. El palmarés de Mike Kryzewski o K, como también le gusta que le llamen, da vértigo: cuatro campeonatos nacionales en Duke con los Blue Devils,; 11 Final Fours; y dos
medallas olímpicas, en 2008 y 2012, con la selección nacional de baloncesto. Ha sido elegido mejor
entrenador del año por la revista Time y por la CNN (2001), deportista del año por Sports Illustrated
(2011) y entrenador de baloncesto del año en 2006, 2007, 2009 y 2012. Y, no obstante, este descendiente de emigrantes polacos es un verso libre en el baloncesto de Estados Unidos. Porque podría
entrenar a cualquier equipo que quisiese de la NBA (ofertas no le faltan) y, sin embargo, continúa
en la liga universitaria NCAA, en la que lleva 34 temporadas al frente del equipo de la universidad

as a university basketball coach: four national championships with
the Blue Devils of Duke University, 11 ‘Final Fours’, and two Olympic
medals, in 2008 and 2012. He has been chosen Coach of the Year
by Time magazine and CNN (2001), Sportsman of the Year by
Sports Illustrated (2011) and basketball coach of the year in 2006,
2007, 2009 and 2012. Nevertheless, this son of Polish immigrants
is something of a wild card in American basketball. He could train
any team he wished in the NBA –he has had plenty of offers– but he stays put on the

Pero ¿qué tiene Mike Kryzewski que enamora a los equipos de la NBA, a los que rechaza?
K es un corredor de fondo. Sabe que el éxito es la recompensa al esfuerzo y al trabajo en
equipo, con la búsqueda de la excelencia como guía. Sabe sacar lo mejor de cada uno de
sus jugadores, a los que también exige dar el máximo. El ‘plan de reclutamiento’ de Duke
tiene como objetivo atraer siempre a los mejores jugadores de baloncesto universitario. De
su método, Jason Williams, dos veces jugador nacional del año, dijo: “Es un sueño jugar con
un tipo como él, que es una roca y que cree en ti cada segundo que estás en la pista”. La
réplica nos la ofrece el propio Kryzewski: “No hay varita mágica. Es cuestión de trabajo
duro, organización y un poco de suerte”. Para K, “cuando se está construyendo algo grande,
se necesita tiempo”. Estas son algunas de las recetas de éxito que el propio K ha convertido
en best-sellers, en libros en los que ha sido coautor, los dos últimos escritos junto a su hija
Jamie (The gold standard: building a world-class team y Beyond basketball: coach K’s
keywords for sucess). K es un hombre familiar, un hombre bueno y un patriota que aspira
a ganar el Mundial de Baloncesto de 2014… con permiso de su homólogo español, Juan
Antonio Orenga, y del equipo español, que también aspiran a repetir la final que les enfrentó al Dream Team en el Mundial de 2006 y que, por cierto, ganó la ÑBA.

college level: 34 straight seasons with Duke. K is loyal to people and institutions. “I
love Duke and college basketball,” he always answers when asked about this.
Kryzewski is a straight talker, betraying his military background and traditional
Polish upbringing. Advice received from his mother, Emily Kryzewski, has always
guided K, and offers a clue to his unswerving loyalty to Duke and the university
level. (He also earns 9.5 million dollars each year.) “My mother always told me
to associate with important people and institutions. I tried to do that at the US
Military Academy and at Duke,” he says now.
What is it about Mike Kryzewski that so attracts the NBA that he has repeatedly
rejected? K is a long-distance runner: he knows that success is the reward for effort and
teamwork and the constant pursuit of excellence. He knows how to get the best out of
each of his players, on whom he is tremendously demanding. The Duke recruiting plan
seeks to attract the best college basketball players. Jason Williams, twice a national
college player of the year, says of the method: “It’s a dream to play for a man like
this, who is rock-solid and who believes in you every second you’re on the court.” And
Kryzewski has his own answer: “There’s no magic formula. It’s a question of hard work,

building something important, you need

K is a family man and a patriot, he
naturally wants to win the 2014 World
Championship... with the permission of his
Spanish counterpart, Juan Antonio
Orenga, and the Spanish national side.
They want to make it to the final against
the Dream Team, as they did in 2006
–and this time win it all.
