Have I snuffed out the gift of life? Have I helped do so? • Do I respect the environment? • Am I part worldly and part believer? • Do I overdo it with eating, drinking, smoking, and amusements? • Am I overly concerned about my physical well-being, my possessions? • Do I dream of revenge, hold grudges? John the Baptist saying to the people to share what you have with others who have not. He goes on to say that he is baptizing with water but one mightier than he is coming to baptize with the Holy Spirit and Fire. Given the time of the year I might say “Merry Christmas to all”!! …. Sort of an odd way to begin a reflection of this week’s gospel? I guess so but what better time than the Christmas season would you share one of your cloaks with someone who has none. Or share food with someone who has no food. We should do this year round but certainly during the Christmas season. Tax collectors and soldiers ask John the Baptist what it is they should do? The response; don’t practice extortion, don’t falsely accuse and be satisfied with your wages. This to me is basic behavior we should all observe year round but certainly at this time of year. John goes on to talk about the coming of Christ in a vivid and incredible way in which Christ will judge us all. Baptizing with the Holy Spirit and Fire and gathering the wheat but burning the chaff. This is John describing Christ baptizing to save us. At Christmas, we think of the birth of Christ as a sign that the savior is born. All year, we build up to the celebration of the birth of Jesus through weeks of preparation. Through this week’s Gospel, we see John preparing sinners, for the coming of Jesus. ¡Esperamos a nuestro Redentor!
