Dear Parents,
As I shared earlier in letters mailed to all parents last month, Fort Bend ISD is actively working to reduce
the money absorbed by our general fund due to outstanding child nutrition balances. This is important
because as of this week, the District is owed approximately $400,000 – and this balance is growing each
day. I am writing today because as we budget for the 2016-17 year, it has become apparent that
immediate action is needed to assist in collection efforts, and we can no longer allow students to charge
hot meals indefinitely and without limits.
Courtesy Meals
Beginning May 2, 2016, any student with an outstanding balance of $35 or more will be served a
courtesy meal, consisting of cereal and milk for breakfast, and a cheese sandwich and milk for lunch.
These meals will prevent additional charges to the student’s account until the outstanding balance is
paid, but even more importantly, it will ensure that our students do not go with an empty stomach if
they do not have money to pay for a meal.
The Child Nutrition Department has communicated this change in letters that were mailed home earlier
this month to parents of students who had balances of five dollars or more. In addition, email messages
to parents of students with outstanding balances began late last week, and notes are being sent home
with students this week.
Students who have outstanding balances of $35 or more are encouraged to bring a lunch from home,
or bring cash to pay for their meals. As a reminder, you can visit www.fortbendisd.com/childnutrition to
add payment to your child’s account and sign up for alerts that will be emailed to you when your child’s
lunch account balance is low.
Free and Reduced Lunch Program
Students who qualify for free meals through the District’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program will
continue to receive hot meals, and those who qualify for reduced meals will continue to pay the same
amount. However, if students are eligible to purchase meals at a reduced cost, they will still be unable
to charge beyond the $35 dollar limit.

As parents, we understand that it is sometimes easy to forget to add money to your student’s account.
For this reason, we will continue to allow students to charge up to $35 (excluding a la carte items) for
the remainder of the school year.
I want to thank the parents who have addressed their open balances within the past few weeks. For
those who have always been current, please know that we truly appreciate your efforts.

Comidas de cortesía
A partir del 2 de mayo de 2016, todos los alumnos que tengan un saldo pendiente de $35 o más
recibirán una comida de cortesía, que incluye cereales y leche como desayuno y un sándwich de queso
y leche como almuerzo. Estas comidas evitarán que se sigan acumulando cargos en la cuenta del

Programa de Almuerzos Gratuitos y a Precio Reducido
Los alumnos que cumplen con los requisitos para recibir comidas gratuitas a través del Programa de
Almuerzos Gratuitos y a Precio Reducido del Distrito continuarán recibiendo comidas calientes, y
aquellos que cumplen con los requisitos para recibir comidas a precio reducido seguirán pagando la
misma suma. Sin embargo, aún si los alumnos son elegibles para comprar comidas a un costo reducido,
no podrán cargar comidas más allá del límite de $35 dólares.

su solicitud en línea.
Como padres, entendemos que a veces es fácil olvidarse de cargar dinero en la cuenta de nuestros hijos.
Por este motivo, continuaremos permitiéndoles a los alumnos que carguen hasta $35 (excluyendo
comidas a la carta) durante el resto del año lectivo.
