Praying for the Kingdom of God
Welcome — Initial Prayer – ask God to guide the reflection
See the reality: For Christians, the idea of the Kingdom of God is basic to our understanding of Jesus’ life and
mission. He stated it was his goal: to establish the Kingdom of God. The term is mentioned more than 75 times in the
Gospels. But there are many opinions about what is the Kingdom of God. Evangelical Christians say that only after we
die can we experience the Kingdom. For them it does not exist on earth. For them, to enter the Reign of God all we
need do is conduct ourselves well, not do bad things, and wait for death. We Catholics on the other hand, see ourselves
as collaborating with God to carry on the work of Jesus to promote the growth of the Kingdom of God on earth, even
though it will not be perfectly built until Christ comes again. That means we are to work for justice, solidarity, freedom
of captives and the elimination of poverty. We do this directly by helping the poor and oppressed we know but also by
working to change our society so that it is more just. For that reason we work to change laws, elect good public
officials, and protest injustice.
 What were you taught about the Reign of God? Was it here on earth or only in heaven?
 What are signs of the Kingdom of God existing among us albeit imperfectly? How do we recognize them
 What are spiritual and physical parts of the Kingdom?
 How will the Kingdom of God come about more perfectly? What do we have to do to make it happen?
Judge according to the Word of God “In Galilee, Jesus proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’,
he said, ‘and the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent and believe the Good News’”. (Mark 1:14-15)
 What do you think Jesus meant by this, i.e., The Kingdom of God is close at hand? How?
 What is the Good News that Jesus was announcing? Describe it.
 What does it mean to “repent”? Why is that important?
 What does it mean to “believe” the Good News?
Read: “Jesus unrolled the scroll and read: ‘The Spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for he has anointed me. He has
sent me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and to the blind new sight, to set the
downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor’. …Then, he spoke: ‘This text is being fulfilled today even as
you listen’”. (Luke 4:17-21)
 What is “good news” to the poor”?
 When Jesus speaks of liberating and freeing others does he mean spiritual freedom or material or physical
freedom or both? Do you think Christians understand this? Why not?
 What do we do to carry on this mission of Jesus? Who needs to be set free today?
 What can we do to help them free themselves from poverty, captivity, exploitation and violence?
 Do you think the parish should be fighting for human rights, minimum wage increase, immigration reform?
Put into action the fruits of our Reflection
A saying teaches: “The same dog with a different collar” i.e., “nothing has really changed.” Sickness, oppression,
exploitation, and marginalization haven’t changed. Only the collar has changed. The ways of impoverishing and killing
people through corruption, deceit, violence, and greed are still with us. Christ calls us to help build the reign of God in
our times. The Body of Christ with the Lord as head is the instrument of continuing God’s work that Jesus began.
 How does St. Pius V work for the Kingdom of God on earth?
 Does working for the Kingdom of God mean we might have to get involved in matters politically?
 Is fighting for immigration reform and an increase in the minimum wage part of promoting the Kingdom?
 Are you willing to serve to help St. Pius V parish be a strong builder of the Kingdome of God? How?
 Are you willing to volunteer in one of St Pius’s social ministries?

Orando por el Reino de Dios
Bienvenida y Oración inicial: Pide a Dios que guie la reflexión

Entre cristianos, el concepto del Reino de Dios es fundamental a nuestra comprensión de la vida y misión de Cristo.
Era su enfoque principal. Pero, hay varias opiniones sobre su forma en este mundo. Los cristianos evangélicos creen
que aparece después de la muerte cuando experimentamos el Reino. Para entrar en el Reino, sólo lo necesario es:
comportarse bien, no hacen cosas malas, y esperar la muerte. Los Católicos creemos que tenemos que luchar para
establecer el Reino, específicamente los valores, estructuras y sistemas como justicia, solidaridad, igualdad, y la opción
por los pobres y oprimidos en las estructuras socio-políticas, culturales, y de familias.
 ¿Qué aprendiste del Reino de Dios? ¿Estaba en la tierra o solo en el cielo?
 ¿Cuáles son los signos del Reino de Dios que existen aunque sean imperfectos? ¿Cómo los reconocemos?
 ¿Cuáles son las partes espirituales y físicas del Reino?
 ¿Cómo se va a volver más perfecto el Reino de Dios? ¿Qué tenemos que hacer para promoverlo?
Juzgar de acuerdo con la Palabra de Dios Lean: “En Galilea, Jesús proclamó la Buena Nueva de Dios,
‘El tiempo se ha cumplido y el Reino de Dios está cerca; conviértanse, y crean en la Buena Nueva’”. (Marcos 1:14-15)
 ¿Qué piensas que Jesús quería decir cuando dijo: “El Reino de Dios está cerca? ¿Cómo es?
 ¿Qué es la Buena Nueva que Jesús estaba anunciando? Descríbelo.
 ¿Qué quiere decir “arrepentirse”? ¿Por qué es importante?
 ¿Qué quiere decir “crean en la Buena Nueva”?
Lean: “Jesús entró en la sinagoga y desenrolló el volumen y leyó esta profecía del libro de Isaías: ‘El espíritu del Señor
está sobre mi porque me ha ungido. Me ha mandado para anunciar la Buena Nueva a los pobres, la libertad a los
cautivos, y la vista a los ciegos, para dar la libertad a los oprimidos, y proclamar un año de gracia del Señor’.
Comenzó a decirles, ‘Ésta escritura que acaban de oír, se ha cumplido hoy’”. (Lucas 4:17-21)
 ¿Qué es “la Buena Nueva” para los pobres?¿Cuándo Jesús habla de liberar a otros, se hace referencia a la
libertad espiritual o material o física o las dos? ¿Los cristianos entienden esto?
 ¿Qué tenemos que hacer para llevar adelante la misión de Jesús?
 ¿Qué o a quienes tenemos que liberar hoy día?
 ¿Qué podemos hacer para liberar a otros de pobreza, cautivo, explotación y violencia?
 ¿Piensas que está bien que la parroquia lucha por los derechos humanos, la reforma inmigratoria, etc?
Poner en acción los frutos de nuestra reflexión
Hay un refrán que dice: “El mismo perro, con distinto collar”, que quiere decir: todo sigue igual: las enfermedades,
opresión, explotación marginación, no se han cambiado. Lo único que cambió fue el collar, o sea, las formas de
empobrecer y oprimir al pueblo como: la corrupción, explotación, violencia, la avaricia, etc. Cristo nos llama a
participar en la construcción del reino en nuestros días. El cuerpo de Cristo, con el Señor como cabeza, es el
instrumento en la continuación de la obra que Jesucristo inició.





¿Cómo trabaja San Pío V por el Reino de Dios en la tierra?
¿Trabajar para el Reino implica que tenemos que envolvernos en algo social y político?
¿Trabajar para la reforma de inmigración y una alza en el sueldo mínimo es parte de promover el Reino?
¿Estás dispuesto a servir para ayudar a la parroquia ser un constructor más fuerte del Reino de Dios?
¿Estás dispuesto a ser voluntario en un ministerio de servicio dentro de la parroquia? ¿Cómo?
