UNIT 4 – WEATHER AND CLIMATE ENGLISH Rotation SPANISH Rotación DEFINITION/IN CONTEXT Movement of the Earth around its axis Revolution Traslación Movement of the Earth around the Sun Maximum temperature Minimum temperature Average temperature Temperatura máxima Temperatura mínima Temperatura media Precipitación Water falling from clouds in liquid form or in solid form Precipitación media anual Precipitación por evaporación del suelo Precipitación por el relieve Precipitation / Rainfall Annual average rainfall Convectional precipitation Relief precipitation / Orographic precipitation Frontal precipitation Rain gauge Precipitación por el contacto de masas de aire a distintas temperaturas Pluviómetro A type of instrument used by meteorologists to gather and measure the amount of liquid precipitation over a set period of time. Barometer Barómetro An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure Atmospheric pressure Presión atmosférica The earth is covered in a layer of air. However, this layer is not distributed evenly around the globe. At different times, the layer of air is thicker in some places than in others. Where the layer of air is thicker, there is more air. Since there is more air, there is a higher pressure in that spot. GLOSSARY PICTURE Anticyclone Anticiclón A weather event where there is a downward movement of the air and a high pressure area over the part of the planet's surface affected by it. Low Borrasca Region where the atmospheric pressure is lower in relation to the surrounding area Climate graph / climogram Climograma Weather vane / Weathercock Veleta Anemometer Anemómetro A device that is used for measuring wind speed An instrument for showing the direction of the wind
