Sadly Mr. Shahbazian was unable to join us during this fascinating field trip, so one of our teachers, Mrs. Downs, gladly volunteered to take his place. . It was a beautiful, sunny Friday morning. The happy fourth graders rode on two tour buses. We left early at 6:30 am. Many kids brought their electronics to the field trip to entertain themselves and to take pictures. The bus trip took around an hour to get to McDonalds. Finally, the bus stopped at McDonald's in Los Banos. The kids then ate a delicious breakfast, before they continued the trip to Mission San Juan Bautista. It took around another hour to get to the destination. When the energetic kids got to the mission, they “oohed and aahed” at the beautiful sight in front of them. The tour guide explained the rules to the kids and the chaperones. For example, there would be no eating in the buildings and no running at all. There were many fascinating sites to see, like the blacksmith’s work area, plaza stable, and even the church. There were also many items that you could see. In one area there was a mortar and pestle. In another, there was a door that was very small. The people who lived in the mission must have been quite short! Father Junipero Serra was! Some interesting facts you could learn are; the mission is located near the San Andreas Fault Line, and it was featured in the Alfred Hitchcock film “Vertigo.” The film “Vertigo” is a horror movie. After the kids and chaperones had bought their souvenirs, everybody lined up for a couple of field trip pictures. Once everybody got on the bus, Mrs. Sodhi put on a movie called “The Book Master.” After watching the movie “The Book Master” once, we came across Casa De Fruita. Sadly it was raining. The chaperones and students ate their lunch inside the bus. Once everybody finished eating, the rain had stopped. The students and chaperones got down for a sweet treat. There was sorbet, ice cream, taffy, and even more candy than you had ever seen. There was also a train that kids played on while chaperones talked to each other. After everybody had their fun, the bus drove for a while longer. On the way back to the school, the kids watched “The Book Master” one 2 Sanger Academy Charter School Issue #5 May/June 2016 more time. The bus was very noisy. The kids were full of energy because they were filled with candy. Many kids bought souvenirs. They bought kendamas, harmonicas, quartz, obsidian, amethyst, and more. Some kids took pictures of almost everything. In the end, the fourth graders had a fun and an educational trip to Mission San Juan Bautista. The Mission of San Juan Bautista was fascinating, yet educational. The fourth graders learned many new things during this trip. Sodhi puso una pelicula llamada “The Book Master.” Despues de ver la pelicula, “The Book Master”, llegamos a Casa De Fruita. Tristemente estaba lloviendo. Students have been learning many things such as how to blend sounds to read words, stretch sounds to write words, read and write the 44 Kinder sight words, and writing sentences while using our chant to remember sentence structure, “start it with an uppercase, don’t forget the finger space, end it with a period”. Many students have been working on reading and writing the first grade sight words as well in order to be prepared for our Kinder Spelling Bee against Mrs. Torres and Mrs. Mendoza’s classes. In addition, we have been working hard on our addition and subtraction math facts and mastering counting by 10’s and 1’s to 100. We are still working on 100% of our class mastering naming attributes for 2 and 3-‐dimensional shapes. Although we have been working very hard to earn 4’s on our report cards, we also know how to celebrate our successes. Students have learned what the B.E.A.R.S. matrix stands for and are continually striving for bear tickets as well as a blue or burgundy stickers at the end of the day. Students are very excited to spend their bear tickets to buy highlighters, water bottles, shirts, and backpacks. We are looking forward to our last Fun Day with all students participating! During Open House, students were able to share stories they have written throughout the year. Parents were able to see the fun photographs of our celebration of Dr. Seuss Read Across America, the first day of school, and star of the week posters. We recently finished making observations and learning about the life cycle of butterflies. We look forward to celebrating our magnificent moms with muffins, visiting the spectacular sea lion cove and awesome African adventure at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, and entertaining our delightful dads with donuts. This has been an outstanding year and all of the students have worked hard to ensure that throughout their year as Kinder Cubs they have made great choices while mastering the standards. I want to thank all of my parents for supporting me but most importantly for helping to support our Kinder Cubs! By Katya Madrigal & Gianna Vasquez Fifth Grade, so far, has been a blast! You can trust us because we’re in it! We’ve been working on some fun activities in science, including a science related field trip in the works. One of our latest activities in was creating biomes a-which are a miniature version of an ecosystem in the wild. Each of our eight groups got soda bottles and and stacked one soda bottle for terrain/land where bug and animals live and on the bottom was a bottle for an aquatic ecosystem where fish live and aquatic plants are grown underwater. In the ecosystems the animals did what they would do in the wild such as reproduce, release waste, and eat food. The animals that were included in the terrain ecosystem were snails, slugs, worms, rollie pollies, and ladybugs etc. In the aquatic ecosystem there was merely fish and rocks with some aquatic plants. I believe that this activity that we did was so awesome and I would do it again if I could. Another activity that we did was create a replica of our solar system. We did this out of paper mache and balloons! Each group was assigned a planet, researched and then made a slideshow about it. After that, each group blew a balloon and covered it in paper mache. Once the paper mache was dry, the groups painted their planet the color it was and made sure that the main details were on the planet and the slide show. In the end, we presented our slides and planets to the whole class using PVLEGS. In our opinion, this project was the most fun of all the things we did. This year for our 5th grade field trip, we are going to the Science Tech Lab Museum in San Jose, California. We will be able to work on some hands on technology and science activities plus see some of the latest gadgets and technology! All in all, we have learned and explored so much in science (as well as math and ELA) this year. This has been and continues to be the most exciting, fun, and the best year ever! So, Fourth Graders be ready for the fun times ahead! From the Sanger Academy Parent/Student Handbook): Students must have a cumulative 2.0 grade point average (2.0) during their 7th and 8th grade years.
