Praying with the Written Word of God: The Bible

Could this happen? Charlie and Mario meet on the street. Charlie asks Mario: “Each week I see you with
your bible. Have you become a Protestant? Mario responds: “No, but I am preparing my child for first
communion and my wife and I are going to classes to know, pray, and to live the Word of God”.


Why do people think that only Protestants read the Bible?
Why do Catholics not read the Bible very much?
Judge according to the light of the Word of God:
Read: “As the scripture says, ‘All human beings are like grass, and all their glory is like wild flowers.
The grass withers, and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord remains forever.” The word is the Good
News that was proclaimed to you.” 1 Peter 1:24-25





Read: “The word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It cuts all the way
through to where soul and spirit meet, to where joints and marrow come together. It judges the desires and
thoughts of the heart. There is nothing that can be hid from God, everything in all creation is exposed and
lies open before his eyes. And it is to him that we must all give an account of ourselves.” Hebrews 4:1213
God reveals himself in many ways: in Creation, in the signs of the times, through people, in the
Sacraments, and importantly through the written word: the Bible. However, God reveals himself most
perfectly in the Son Jesus Christ. Almost all we know about Jesus is found in the Bible.
Example: Find: the gospel of Luke (one of the four Gospels in the New Testament) Find Chapter 23
(there are 24 chapters in Luke) verse 43 (each chapter has verses identified by a number. Chapter 23 has
46 verses).



What does the text say? Who is speaking? Who is being spoken to?
What is happening in Luke’s Gospel story at this moment? (Look at verses 33 to 45)
Jesus makes a promise. How does this promise apply to us?
Put into action the fruits of our reflection:
 What do you need to understand and use the Bible more as a source of spiritual nourishment?
 Will you read the Bible more frequently?
 Do you want to participate in classes to learn more about the Bible? If so, please call the parish
and tell the receptionist to sign you up for Bible classes.

Orando con la Palabra de Dios: La Biblia
Bienvenida
Oración inicial: Pide a Dios que guíe la reflexión

¿Puede pasar lo siguiente? Carlos y Mario se encuentran en la calle; Carlos dice a Mario: “Cada semana
te veo con tu biblia. ¿Ya eres protestante?” Mario responde: “No, pero estoy preparando a mi hijo por
su Primera Comunión, y mi esposa y yo estamos tomando clases para conocer, orar, y vivir la Palabra de
Dios”.
¿Por qué muchas personas creen que solamente los protestantes leen la biblia?
¿Por qué los católicos no leen mucho la biblia?
Juzgar de acuerdo con la luz de la Palabra de Dios
Lean: “Como dice la escritura: ‘Pues todo mortal es como la hierba y toda su gloria como flor de hierba;
se seca la hierba y se marchita la flor; pero la palabra del Señor permanece para siempre’. Y ésta es la
Palabra, la Buena Nueva anunciada a ustedes”. 1 Pedro 1, 24-25





¿Qué es una cosa que has aprendido de la biblia?
Lean también: “La palabra de Dios está vivo y activa, más fina que una espada de dos filos. Penetra hasta
las fronteras entre el alma y el espíritu. Juzga los deseos y pensamientos del corazón. No hay nada que se
puede esconder de Dios; todo en la Creación está expuesto y abierto a sus ojos. Y es a Él a quien tenemos
que dar cuenta”. Hebreos 4, 12-13
Dios se revela en varias maneras: en la creación, por los signos de los tiempos, por otras personas, por
los sacramentos, e importantemente por la palabra escrita – la biblia. Por lo tanto, Dios se revela más
perfectamente por el Hijo Jesucristo. Todo lo que sabemos de Él se encuentra en la biblia.
Práctica: En tu biblia busca el evangelio de Lucas (uno de los cuatro evangelios en el Nuevo
Testamento)..Encuentra: capítulo 23 (Lucas tiene 24 capítulos) y versículo 43 (cada capítulo tiene
versículos identificados por número)



¿Qué dice el texto? ¿Quién está hablando? ¿A quién está hablando?
¿Qué está pasando en el evangelio de Lucas en este momento (ver: versículos de 33 a 45)
Jesús hace una promesa. ¿Cómo pertenece esta promesa a tí?
