A Great Hearts education is sometimes called a "great books" education, and make no mistake,
the classic tales, poems, stories, epics, plays, novels, and philosophical treatises of our Western
civilization are at the heart of our schools. From phonics and fairy tales to Shakespeare and
Plato, Great Hearts students achieve the highest degree of literacy that a K-12 education can
provide. They learn to think clearly and to communicate at the highest level.
From the earliest days of kindergarten, children receive reading and writing instruction that
places them ahead of their peers. Throughout the lower grades, they learn to decode, to spell,
and to write-and then to summarize, to interpret, and even to analyze works of literature worth
reading. In the upper grades, students sharpen their skills with ever more challenging and
rewarding books, and their abilities to write clearly, to speak formally, and to argue effectively
are honed. As the culmination of their schooling, Great Hearts seniors write an original 15-page
thesis and deliver a public oral defense in front of a panel of teachers, an experience few
college students have, let alone high schoolers.
The 21st-century skills learned at a Great Hearts Academy equip students for the tough
interview, the boardroom, the courtroom, the newsroom, the laboratory, and anywhere else
where written and spoken communication are the tools for success. They learn to think
critically: to evaluate arguments, to collect and consider evidence, and to "build a case" that
stands up to scrutiny. As digital communications media continue to evolve rapidly, the ability to
communicate in writing and speech through those media is more important than ever.

Laura Roth is pleased to be a returning to
Maryvale Prep as the Academic Intervention
Director and Kindergarten Teaching Apprentice.
Mrs. Roth brings with her six years of teaching
experience and a passionate enthusiasm for
education.
As a founding team member of Maryvale Prep,
Mrs. Roth led Kindergarten students as a
homeroom teacher for three school years. As she
transitions into a new role this year Mrs. Roth is
excited to ensure that all of our scholars reach
their full academic potential on their road to
college. Mrs. Roth's true passion lies in instructing
phonics and literacy. She has been recognized by
the Great Hearts network as an exemplary phonics
instructor and is a Spalding certified phonics
coach. Mrs. Roth's passion for literacy is
evidenced in her students' achievement scores
and their continued success in first grade.
She received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Colorado in Boulder in Journalism
and Religious Studies. Mrs. Roth received her education training from Teach for America in
Houston.

and her fellow teachers at Maryvale Prep and make the Great Hearts educational model
