TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
We are in the liturgical season of “Ordinary Time”. We
are not preparing for Christmas or Easter at this time. The
scripture readings that we hear at Mass during Ordinary Time
often do not have a clear theme to them so that leaves us a bit
confused. So we have to go with the flow.
We often think of Jesus as being the Prince of Peace. In
his ministry he fostered mercy, forgiveness, compassion service
to our neighbor and faith in the promises of God.
Today’s gospel reading from Luke 12:49-53 tells us of
Jesus saying to his followers and to all those watching him, “I
have come to set the earth on fire and how I wish it were already
blazing…”
Of course, Jesus is the Prince of Peace but in this gospel
story, he is challenging his followers to abandon seeing reality in
human limited terms and be open to the truth that Jesus was
speaking. He was calling people to listen to his words and
actions that pointed to “God’s one intention for creation.” The
core message of loving God and loving neighbor is a “fire”
because it burns away our selfishness and self-centeredness.
Ultimately, Jesus gave his life on the cross to prove the truth of
his words, the meaning of his life and the faith and hope we must
have in him. Christ on the Cross speaks volumes and he does not
get off the cross no matter what the price of being faithful to his
mission of bringing salvation to all mankind.
St. Catherine of Siena wrote: “…when we contemplate
our Creator’s love, we are drawn at one to love in him and turn
our affection completely on him. In him all the dampness of
selfishness if dried up, and we take on the likeness of the Holy
Spirit’s fire.” {Magnificat, 188}
Each of us asks for the grace of an ever-deepening
relationship with God. This is not selfish. Rather the greater the
depth of our relationship enriches, confirms and sustains in true
love the person we give away to others in love and service. So in
loving God “first” does not compromise or diminish our human
relationships. Our relationship with God sanctifies the person I
am and the person I “give away” in love and service to others.
Each of us has that part to play in building up the kingdom of
God.

Queridos feligreses y amigos,
Espíritu Santo. "{Magnificat, 188}

Come Experience
A Way of Silent Prayer
Prayer without words is not new, but ages old.
It is a way to open one’s heart in silence and
stillness to the indwelling presence of Christ.
In today’s busy world, we need to find periods
of silence and quiet,
long enough for our “doubts to dissolve,
cares to lose their urgent pressures,
uncertainty to give way to trust.”
“To wait in silence is to be taken to the center
where we find that the mind has become quiet
and the heart is at peace. And, in stillness, we
find God.”
Come join us.
