2014 Annual Report What We Do Why Education?* Education plays a fundamental role in human, social, and economic development. Improving education directly impacts human well-being in a variety of ways, and is an effective tool to: Reduce Poverty More schooling leads to increased income Improve Health Helps fight the spread of diseases and lowers mother and child mortality rates Promote Equality Empowers women and fosters gender equality By the Numbers: Education in Central America 50% of high school students drop out before graduating 70% of schools lack computer labs 10% of all students go on to finish college 60% of schools don’t have libraries 50% of rural schools lack electricity and potable water We address these problems through programs that increase access to education and resources in Central America. We work in close collaboration with local community members to design and carry out high-impact educational projects. *Sources: UNICEF, UNESCO, Inter-American Development Bank Cover Photo by James Hall Photography Programming 3 Learning Resource Centers (LRCs) in Nicaragua Estimated LRC user visits in 2014 (including students, teachers, and community members) Resources Offered: Libraries with over 4,000 books Computers and digital resources Games and puzzles for all ages Research materials Friday arts and crafts activities Classes and Workshops: 72 local teachers trained 109 dance students 165 music students 14 young musicians in workshops (guitar and recorder) in the Grupo SOL band 33,000 Scholarships 67 61 6 “I want to thank you for your big hearts, and for giving me the opportunity to continue my studies.
