Bergoglio VII In order to understand Pope Francis’ style of administration I believe there are two essential concepts which must be grasped: [1] He governs from the periphery and [2] listening to individuals is more important than philosophical principles. I believe these are the lens through which we can understand him and the way he administers the See of Peter. But let’s back up and take a quick journey through the story of his life. His grandparents emigrated from Italy to Argentina in the 1880s during a massive immigration from Italy, for example my great grandparents emigrated from Genoa to California during that wave. Thus Jorge was born in Buenos Aires within an Italian enclave of the city. The greatest influence on him was his grandmother Rosa, a formidable woman of deep faith and political skill – she had been involved in “Catholic Action” a political movement in Northern Italy before coming to Argentina. He learned Italian speaking with her in his early childhood, but his primary language is Spanish. From “Nona” Rosa he also learned the Rosary and his prayers and she took him to Mass. He was active in school and in the neighborhood playing soccer, and still cheers his favorite team from “San Lorenzo” the smallest and pluckiest of the three major teams in Buenos Aires.
