Don’t let it all go down the drain...the Storm Drain!
It’s up to you to make sure litter, pesticides, detergents, oil and grease and pet
waste DO NOT end up in the storm drain. The storm drain system discharges
untreated water directly into creeks, rivers and eventually, the ocean.
You can prevent harmful substances from entering storm drains by keeping
yards, driveways, sidewalks and streets clean. When it rains, water carries all
kinds of pollutants to the storm drains and into our waterways throughout
Pismo Beach.
CAR, LAWNMOWER AND EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

Catch any fluid leaks using a drip pan
Clean up spills with absorbents like cat litter, then dispose of them properly. DON’T use a hose to wash spills into storm drains!
Wash your car at a commercial/coin operated car wash where wash water is treated and recycled. If you must wash it at home, use soap and detailing products with care.
Try to divert the water to a vegetated area.
PET WASTE
e Pet waste is very harmful to humans, so clean up after your pets and dispose of pet waste in a trash bin.
DRIVEWAYS AND SIDEWALKS
GARDENING AND LANDSCAPING

Use only the amount of gardening chemicals you need. Check out “green” gardening chemicals at local retailers and consider alternative methods.
Use only the water you need. Check sprinklers to ensure that you don’t
waste water - and money - by watering the sidewalk.
Cover any stockpiles of dirt or mulch before it rains or gets windy.
ILLEGAL DUMPING

Dumping waste into the storm drain is illegal! Call the Stormwater Hotline at (805) 596-5050 to report your concern.
Properly dispose of hazardous materials such as paints and paint thinners, pesticides, oil and fuel additives, starter fluids and solvents.

e Sweep off driveways and sidewalks rather than hosing them down. Dispose of the waste in trash bins.
Remember to MAKE THE CONNECTION and only send rain down the Storm Drain!

Use un recipiente para interceptar goteos de cualquier fluido
Limpie los derrames con absorbentes como arena higiénica, después deséch elos
adecuadamente. No use la manguera para limpiar y desechar derrames en la
alcantarilla.
Lave su coche en un establecimiento comercial para lavado de coches donde el agua usada es depurada y recicia. Si lo lava en su casa, use jabón y productos para cuidado de coches, precavidamente.
Trate de dirigir el agua a áreas con vegetación.
DESECHOS DE MASCOTAS
e Los desechos de mascotas son muy dañinos para los humanos, asi que limpie los desechos de sus mascotas y póngalos en el bote de la basura.
ENTRADA DE COCHERAS Y ACERAS
e Use la escoba en lugar de la manguera para limpiar la entrada de la cochera y aceras. Ponga los desechos en el bote de la basura.
CUIDADO Y DISENO DE JARDIN

Use solamente la cantidad necesaria de productos quimicos. Échele un vistazo a los productor “verdes” de jardineria en los establecimientos locales y considere métodos alternativos.
Use solamente el agua necesaria. Revise los aspersores para asegurarse que no
desperdicie agua - y dinero - en la acera.
Cubra los montones de tierra y mantillo antes de que llueva o se ponga ventoso.
ACTIVIDADES ILLEGALES

Botar desechos en la alcantarilla pluvial es ilegal! Llame la linea directa de
Stormwater al (805) 596-5050 a reportear su preocupacion.
Deseche gratuitamente los materiales peligrosos tales como pinturas y disolventes de
pinturas, pesticidas, aditivos para aceite y combustibles, fluidos del motor de
arranque y solventes en el Local de Colección de Desechos Peligrosos Domesticos.
