Carnival is derived from Latin “carnem levare” which means ‘removal of flesh’ which suggests the abstinence of people both from alimental (food) and bodily pleasures. Alimental relates to refraining from eating meat during the season of lent. Carnival is held to give way for the Catholics to indulge on earthly pleasures or physical appetites relating to food, temporal, and other worldly pleasures before the lent starts. Lent requires people to give up worldly pleasures and spend the next 40 days fasting starting from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. Carnival is celebrated around the globe although it is largely concentrated in Europe, South America (Brazil and Mexico) and parts of the US such as New Orleans in Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama. Some countries in Asia especially around the Pacific region also celebrate a local version of carnival. Brazil: ● most celebrated place ● week of no work - just parties and festivals ● parades and dancing Mexico ● 3 most attended carnival celebrations ● 300,000 people attend a celebration in Mazaltan, MX US ● New Orleans Mardi Gras ● masquerades Brazil Mexico Brain break https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AquJ0ICKimU ¡Pégalo! ● Each group of 2-3 people will get a set of cards with pictures ● Arrange the pictures between the two of you ● I will call out a word that corresponds to a picture ● You must grab the word before your partner does!
