In 1927, Hollywood’s popular silent film star George Valentin (Dujardin) is posing outside the premiere of his latest film when a beautiful young woman accidentally bumps into him. Making light of the situation, he poses with her for the cameras, landing both their faces on the front page of Variety with the headline “Who’s That Girl?” The girl is Peppy Miller (Bejo), an unknown who later auditions for the role of a dancer at Kinograph Studios. When she captures the attention of Valentin, he convinces studio boss Al Zimmer (Goodman) to cast her in his next picture. Valentin begins to coach young Miller for her small role as an extra, and the chemistry between the two becomes obvious. Miller, with guidance from her mentor, slowly begins to attract much bigger roles. As the era of silent films begins to draw to a close, Valentin struggles with the rising popularity of “talkies”. His path drives him into the depths of oblivion, while Miller slowly climbs to the top of the talking film industry. Director Michel Hazanavicius brings to life an era of film he has always admired, using a cast of both French and American actors. A spirited and charming romantic comedy, The Artist took only thirty-five days to shoot but has won a number of accolades at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, 2012 Academy Awards and the 69th Annual Golden Globes. Whether it is the onscreen chemistry, a bit of escapism from modernity, or the nostalgia for the classic essence of film, The Artist is sure to be a film to remember.
