Insemination Technique Checklist
1.Use a new glove for every insemination.
2.Lubricate the glove with clean, non-toxic lubricant.
3.Speak to the animal to make her aware of your presence.
4. Lubricate the anus with gloved hand.
5. Gently enter the rectum by forming a cone with your fingers.
6. Gently and thoroughly clean the rectum of manure.
7. Check the reproductive tract for any abnormal conditions.
8.Clean manure from the vulva and from the underside of your arm
with a paper towel.

9. Place a clean v-spreader in the vulva.
10.Gently and smoothly pass the gun through the vagina to the opening
of the cervical canal – the os cervix.
11. Funnel the tip of the gun into the os cervix.
12.Hold the cervix ahead of the gun’s tip and manipulate the cervical folds
or “rings” to allow the gun to pass. (Fig. 1)
13.Avoid passing the gun through the cervix if pregnancy is suspected.
Note: Pregnancy may be indicated by a “sticky” mucus plug.
14.Determine the length of the cervix and place your index finger at the
uterine end of the cervix.

15. Gently move the gun tip forward until you feel it with your finger.
16.Pass the gun tip only as far forward as the uterine body.
(Figs. 2 and 3)
17.Be certain the gun tip is not caught in a thin area between cervical rings.
(Fig. 4)
18. Concentrate on accurate semen placement. NO DAYDREAMING!!
19. Firmly hold the cervix.

20.Hold the shoulder of the gun between your ring and middle fingers.
Place your right fingers against your left arm to insure that the gun is
not pulled back, into the cervix, during semen deposit.
21.Deposit the semen into the uterine body; slowly (5 secs.) push the plunger
into the straw gun.
22.If the animal moves, STOP! Wait until movement stops, check positioning,
and continue the deposit.
23.Gently remove the gun and check for abnormal discharge after a complete
semen deposit.
24. Remove the V-spreader from the vulva.

25. Record when, and to what sire, the animal was bred.

5. Entre en el recto con cuidado y delicadeza, formando un cono con sus dedos.
6. Limpie el recto de material fecal, con cuidado pero a conciencia.
7. Revise el tracto reproductivo por si hubiese condiciones anormales.
8. Limpie el material fecal de la vulva y de su brazo con una toalla de papel.
9. Coloque una toalla de papel doblado en forma de V en la vulva.

10. Pase con cuidado y suavemente la pistola por la vagina hasta llegar a la entrada del canal cervical – el os cervical.
11. Coloque la punta de la pistola dentro del os cervical.
12. Mantenga el cérvix al frente de la punta de la pistola y manipule los “anillos” o pliegues del cérvix para permitir que pase la pistola. (Fig. 1)
13. Evite pasar la pistola por el cérvix si sospecha preñez. Nota: Se puede notar que una vaca está preñada si esta tiene un tapón mucoso y pegajoso.
14. Determine el largo del cérvix y ubique su dedo índice en la unión del cérvix con
el útero.
15. Mueva la punta del aplicador suavemente hacia adelante, hasta que la pueda sentir con su dedo.

16. Pase la punta del aplicador sólo hasta llegar al cuerpo uterino. (Figs. 2 y 3)
17. Asegúrese que la punta no se atranque en la zona angosta entre los anillos cervicales. (Fig. 4)
18. Concéntrese en la ubicación correcta del semen. ¡NO SE DISTRAIGA!
19. Sostenga firmemente el cérvix.
20. Mantenga el final del aplicador entre su dedo anular y del medio. Mantenga los dedos de su mano derecha contra el brazo izquierdo asegurándose que la pistola no se mueva hacia atrás, dentro del cérvix, durante el momento que deposita el semen.
21. Deposite el semen dentro del cuerpo uterino; lentamente (5 segundos) empuje el émbolo/gatillo hacia la pistola.
22. Si el animal se mueve, ¡PARE! Espere hasta que deje de moverse, revise su posición y continúe depositando el semen.

23. Retire la pistola de inseminación suavemente y observe si existen descargas
anormales, después de haberse asegurado que se deposito el semen completamente.
24. Remueva la toalla de papel que coloco en la vulva.
25. Anote la fecha de la inseminación, el semen del toro con su código y el
número de la vaca.
