Since we’ve already looked at the whole painting, why don’t we agree on two
different sections to look at more closely? Try curling one of your hands into
an “O” shape to create a telescope. Now, let’s use our telescopes to zoom in
on the two parts. What do you notice about the two small sections? What
textures and colors do you see in each section?

The artist who made this painting’s name is Arnoldo Roche Rabell. He creates
portraits that combine parts of Puerto Rican culture, Yoruba spirituality, and
his personal life. Roche used a few methods to create the different textures
in this painting. Here, he pressed ferns right into the wet paint, and also laid
canvas over a person’s body to take a rubbing.

their beliefs to the Caribbean
from Sub-Saharan Africa. Yoruba
spirituality mixes ancient gods and
goddesses (called Orisha) with
some Christian beliefs.

Roche added objects from his
culture and home to his paintings.
He pressed fern leaves into the wet
paint to create texture. Explore your
neighborhood and home to find
objects which could add texture to
your own art (try newspaper, leaves,
etc). Do any of the objects remind
you of someone you know?

Now you can create a portrait of
that person. The objects that you
found can make great decorations
for your portrait! You can use your
objects to make a collage, or try
using some of the same techniques
as Roche: press them directly into
paint to leave an imprint, or put
your paper over the objects and
take a rubbing. What other ways
could you use these objects?
