Venezuela * Its name means “Little Venice”. When explorers saw houses on stilts, they compared it to Venice, Italy. * The biggest rodent in the world, the capybara, lives here. * There is a festival called the “Danzing Devils” to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. The people wear devil masks during the celebration. * It’s the home of Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, (3212 feet. High). * It has vast reserves of crude oil. Colombia * It’s near the Equator so it’s sunny almost the whole year. The seasons do no vary much. * There are over 3,000 species of butterflies and a large variety of birds in Colombia. * 10% of all the different species of animals, insects, and plants in the world live here. * The country is named after Christopher Columbus. * 12% of the world’s coffee comes from Colombia. * Colombia hosts the largest salsa dancing festival in the world. Ecuador * The country is named after the Equator, the imaginary line that goes around the middle of the Earth and separates the north and south hemispheres. * It’s the biggest exporter of bananas in the world. * The Galapagos Islands are home to many interesting animals, including turtles that can live to be 200 years old. * American dollars are used as the country’s currency. * 1,600 species of birds and 6,000 species of butterflies live here. Peru * The Andes Mountains pass from the north to the south of the country. * Macchu Pichú, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is an ancient Inca town. * Peru has 4,000 different types of potatoes. * There are 55 different types of corn, including purple, white, and black. * There are a variety of traditions to celebrate the New Year, including putting on new yellow underwear just before midnight and eating 12 grapes, one for each month of the new year. Bolivia * Bolivia has 30 official languages including Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara. * Bolivia is home to the largest salt deposit in the world and this deposit has lithium reserves underneath it. * It’s one of the rainiest countries in the world. * It used to have two capitals, La Paz and Sucre. * The country is named after Simón Bolívar, a man who fought for Independence from Spain. Paraguay * Instead of saying, “Hola”, when you pass someone in the street, you say, “Adiós”, which means that you don’t have time to stop and drink yerba mate with him or her. * There are no doorbells in Paraguay. Instead, you clap your hands to announce that you’re outside the door. * The women make a delicate lace called “ñandutí”, which means “design of a spider web.” * Paraguay’s flag is the only one with a different design on the front and the back. * The country is famous for its bottle dance where women spin and twirl with bottles stacked on their heads. Chile * Chile is the longest country from north to south and it is very narrow. * The national sport is rodeo. * The Atacama Desert is the driest place in the world. * Chile has 500 volcanoes; 123 are active. * Mountains cover 80% of the country. Argentina * Buenos Aires, the capital, is the 4th largest city in the world. * Argentina is the home of the tango, a passionate dance between a man and a woman. * The Iguazú Falls are made up of 275 drops. * Many gigantic dinosaurs lived here, including one of the largest herbivores, named the Argentinosaurus. * Argentina was the first country to use fingerprints to capture criminals. Uruguay * There are 3 cows for every person in Uruguay. Cattle contribute significantly to the country’s economy. * In 2009, Uruguay became the first country to give a laptop and free Internet access to all school children. * 88% of Uruguayans have European ancestry. Many Spaniards and Italians immigrated to Uruguay during the 1800’s and 1900’s. * Uruguay, in the Guaraní language means, “River of the Painted Birds.” * People eat a lot of beef including typical dishes such as “asado”, (barbecued beef), and “chivitas”, (steak sandwiches). Spain * Spain is a monarchy; it has a king and queen. * Most people take a siesta (nap) between 12 and 4 in the afternoon. People run in front of the bulls and try to stay out of their way. * Spain produces 44% of the world’s olive oil. Equatorial Guinea * It’s the only Spanish speaking country in Africa. Its official languages are French and Spanish, although most people speak native languages. * It has a lot of natural resources including gold, diamonds, and petroleum. * Originally, pygmies lived here. * It’s one of the richest African nations but the people are very poor due to government corruption. * The Monte Alén National Park is home to gorillas, chimpanzees, leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and many species of birds and butterflies.
