Dear Friends,
Thirty-six years ago today, Father John F. Harvey, OSFS, gathered a handful of Catholic
men at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New York City for the first Courage meeting.
None of the priests or laymen who attended that night could have imagined what
would come of their initial meeting, as the apostolate founded on the Five Goals they
set for their spiritual lives spread across the country and around the world.
During his twenty-eight years of leadership, as you know well, Father Harvey shared
the good news of chastity and friendship to hundreds of men and women who
experience same-sex attractions, and expanded the apostolate to include outreach to
parents, spouses and loved ones of men and women in homosexual relationships. His
successor, Father Paul N. Check, has continued this labor of love for the past nine years,
and the Courage and EnCourage family is vibrant and continues to grow. We live on
five continents, and speak half a dozen languages. We are men and women, young and
old, cradle Catholics and converts to the Faith. We love our Church and our Bishops,
and they have returned that love by providing us with faithful, compassionate priests
and deacons who serve as local chaplains. We have a message to share with the world
that is becoming more and more important with each passing day.
It is with this rich legacy in mind that I humbly accept the appointment to serve
Courage International as its third Executive Director. I am deeply grateful to Cardinal
Timothy Dolan and the members of our Episcopal Board, and to Father Paul Scalia and
the members of our Board of Directors, for the confidence they have in my abilities,
limited as I am. I likewise owe a debt of gratitude to the Archbishop of Philadelphia,
Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap., for releasing me for a time from service in
my own archdiocese so that I may accept this appointment. Archbishop Chaput is a
staunch supporter of Courage and EnCourage and I will continue to rely on his pastoral
example and fatherly solicitude.
It has been a privilege for me to work alongside Father Check for several years, first as a
local chaplain and for the past year and a half in the Courage Office. His concern for
the work of the apostolate and for the good of each member is evident in everything he
does, and has inspired and taught me a great deal. We will miss him terribly in the
Courage Office, but I am consoled to know that he will be sharing his gifts of prudence,
zeal and fraternal charity with a new generation of seminarians being formed for the
service of the Church. I am strengthened by the knowledge that he will continue to
serve Courage International as a member of our Board of Directors, and I look forward
to our next few months together as we plan for a smooth transition of leadership at the
end of the year.
Since my time as local Courage chaplain in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I have
often told brother priests that my work with Courage and EnCourage is the part of my
ministry in which I feel most like a spiritual father. It is a privilege and a joy to
welcome you courageous men and women in the name of the Church, to hear the
stories of how God has been acting in your lives and relationships, and to walk with
you along the way to holiness that the Church proposes for our happiness and
fulfillment. Daily I am humbled anew by the trust that you place in me. My only
agenda is to strive each day to live up to that trust, and to serve you, your loved ones,
and the Courage and EnCourage apostolates with the same fatherly love that Father
Harvey and Father Check have modelled so well for so long.
In that striving I beg your daily prayers, and promise you a place in mine.

Queridos amigos,
Un día como hoy hace 36 años, el Padre John F. Harvey, OSFS, junto a un grupo de
hombres católicos tuvo su primera reunión de Courage en la Iglesia Our Lady of the
Rosary en Nueva York. Ninguno de los sacerdotes, ni de los laicos presentes esa noche
pudo haber imaginado lo que surgiría de esa reunión inicial. Ni tampoco hubiesen
pensado que el apostolado fundado en Cinco Metas para su vida espiritual, hoy se haya
extendido en todo el país y alrededor del mundo.
Como ustedes bien saben, a lo largo de 28 años de liderazgo, el Padre Harvey compartió
la Buena Nueva de la castidad y la amistad con cientos de hombres y mujeres que
experimentan atracción al mismo sexo, y extendió el apostolado para llegar a padres,
esposas/os y seres queridos de hombres y mujeres que tienen relaciones homosexuales.
En los últimos nueve años, su sucesor el Padre Paul N. Check ha continuado esta misión
de amor, y la familia de Courage y EnCourage sigue activa y creciendo. Vivimos en cinco
continentes y hablamos seis idiomas. Somos hombres y mujeres, jóvenes y adultos,
católicos de nacimiento y conversos al catolicismo. Amamos a nuestra Iglesia y a
nuestros obispos y ellos han correspondido a ese amor entregándonos sacerdotes y
diáconos fieles y compasivos que sirven como capellanes locales. Tenemos un mensaje
para compartir con el mundo que día a día se torna más importante.
Es con esta herencia en mente que acepto con humildad el nombramiento de servir
como el tercer Director Ejecutivo de Courage International. Me siento profundamente
agradecido con el Cardenal Timothy Dolan y los miembros de nuestro Directorio
Episcopal y con el Padre Paul Scalia y los miembros de nuestro Directorio, por la
confianza que tienen en mis capacidades a pesar de mis limitaciones. Asimismo, estoy
muy agradecido al Arzobispo Charles J. Chaput, OFM Cap., por permitirme este tiempo
fuera del servicio a mi arquidiócesis para poder así aceptar este nombramiento. El
Arzobispo Chaput es un ardoroso defensor de Courage y EnCourage, seguiré contando
con su ejemplo pastoral y preocupación paternal.
Para mí ha sido un privilegio trabajar junto al Padre Check a lo largo de varios años,
primero como capellán local y en este último año y medio en la Oficina de Courage. Su
preocupación por la misión del apostolado y por el bien de cada miembro es clara en
cada acto que realiza, es para mí un ejemplo y he aprendido mucho de él. En la Oficina
de Courage lo vamos a extrañar muchísimo, pero me consuela saber que estará
compartiendo sus dones de prudencia, ardor y caridad fraternal con una nueva
generación de seminaristas que serán formados para el servicio a la Iglesia. Me alienta
saber que seguirá sirviendo como miembro del Directorio de Courage International y
tengo muchas expectativas de los meses que vienen hasta finales de año, en que
planearemos una transición tranquila del liderazgo.
Desde que he sido capellán local de Courage en la Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia, he
compartido constantemente con mis hermanos sacerdotes que la misión de Courage y
EnCourage es la parte de mi ministerio en la que más vivo mi paternidad espiritual. Es
un gozo y un privilegio acogerlos a ustedes a nombre de la Iglesia, hombres y mujeres
valientes, escuchar las historias de cómo Dios actúa en sus vidas y en sus relaciones
humanas, y peregrinar a su lado en este camino de santidad que la Iglesia nos propone
para nuestra felicidad y realización. Cada día me conmuevo más por la confianza que
depositan en mí. Mi única agenda es esforzarme incansablemente para estar a la altura
de esa confianza, y servirlos a ustedes, a sus seres queridos y los apostolados de Courage
y EnCourage con el mismo amor paternal que el Padre Harvey y el Padre Check han
mostrado tan modélicamente a lo largo de tanto tiempo.
