Sampson discusses the legacy of "Lauren's List" - a list of basic requests that her seven-year-old daughter Lauren taped to the door of her hospital room after being ignored, or told "this won't hurt," too many times. She offers her opinion on why providers don't always come across as empathetic, discusses positive interactions during many hospital visits with her daughter, and shares some advice for future health care professionals. Costs of Care, a nonprofit organization that empowers patients and health care workers with information to curb harmful health care costs at a grassroots level, is holding an essay contest with $4,000 in prizes for the best anecdotes illustrating the importance of cost-awareness in health care.
