Forrest Claypool Director Ejecutivo October 4, 2016 Dear CPS Families, Our priority is always to provide a structured and safe learning environment for our students. In the event of a Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) strike, we know we cannot replicate all that teachers provide, but will make sure that students who need a safe and welcoming place to go will have one. While our hope remains that a strike can be avoided through continuing negotiations, we are sharing our contingency plans with you. If needed, we want you to be aware of your options so that you can choose what’s best for your student(s). Should a strike occur, all classes and extracurricular activities will be cancelled. If you have the option of keeping your student(s) at home or at a non-­‐CPS facility throughout a strike, we encourage you to do so. If that is not possible for your family, we encourage you to visit cps.edu/strikeplan to learn more about the following options: •
All CPS school buildings will remain open for their regular bell schedules. While there will be no before-­‐school,
after-­‐school, or weekend programming, schools will welcome students and be led by their principal to ensure they
are safe, fed, and engaged. Students can attend any school, so long as it is appropriate for their grade level.

Additionally, the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Public Library will operate contingency sites throughout
the city, and the CTA will provide free transportation to all students.
Food service will be provided at all contingency sites free of charge. At CPS schools, breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students by regular food service staff. And at each site, students will take part in online learning, PE, and arts & crafts activities. If, after reviewing your contingency site options online, you choose a CPS school, please make sure to register your student(s) using the sign-­‐up form provided so that we can plan accordingly. Finally, for additional assistance with site location and registration, please call 311 (the City of Chicago’s information hotline). Though we are sharing contingency plans with you in the event of a strike, we have not changed our commitment to continue negotiations with CTU leadership in good faith, and with a framework that provides the most generous contract possible for our teachers within the reality of our budget. En el caso de una huelga del Sindicato de Maestros de Chicago (CTU), sabemos que no podemos replicar todo lo que proveen los maestros, pero nos aseguraremos de que los estudiantes que necesiten un lugar seguro y acogedor tengan uno. Aunque continuamos confiando en evitar la huelga mediante negociaciones, estamos compartiendo con ustedes nuestros planes de contingencia. De ser necesario, queremos que sepan cuáles son sus opciones para que escojan lo que sea mejor para su estudiante (s). En el caso de que haya una huelga, todas las clases y actividades extracurriculares serán suspendidas. Si usted puede mantener a su estudiante (s) en casa durante el paro, o en una instalación que no dependa de CPS, les pedimos que lo hagan.
