The Empty Pot
The class will read a beautiful Chinese folktale called “The Empty Pot.” In the
story, the Emperor of China dearly loves flowers. When it comes time to choose his
successor, he decides to “let the flowers choose.” All the children of the land receive
seeds from the Emperor and are told to do their best growing the flowers. The main
character, Ping, loves to grow beautiful flowers, but has no luck with the seeds he
receives from the Emperor. All the other children manage to grow beautiful flowers.
Ping’s father tells him to take his empty pot to the Emperor because he has done his
best. The Emperor declares that Ping will be the future Emperor.
After your child has finished reading “The Empty Pot,” you may want to complete
the following activity together and experience the joy that Ping, the Emperor, and
flower lovers everywhere have experienced.
A Flowering Experience
1. Together, take a trip to a local nursery or gardening store. Ask for advice on
flower seeds that will grow well in a pot.
2. Plant the seeds in a pot of soil.

3. Water the seeds and give them plenty of light.
4. Wait, watch, and see if they grow. If they do, you’ll have beautiful flowers to enjoy.
If they do not, you’ll have, like Ping, the knowledge that you did your best.
Selection Vocabulary
Your child will be studying the following vocabulary words in the upcoming week.
Please review the meanings of these words with your child: kingdom—a country
ruled by a king or queen; emperor—a ruler; tended—past tense of tend: to take
care of someone or something; sprout—to begin to grow; blossom—to bloom;
transferred—past tense of transfer: to move something from one place to another;
courage—the strength to overcome fear.
Spelling
Your child will be studying the following spelling words in the upcoming week.
Please review the spellings of these words with your child: cough, dough, fought,
though, thought, rough, although, tough, ought. Challenge Words: thoughtful,
thorough, sourdough.

The Empty Pot
La clase va a leer un maravilloso cuento chino llamado “The Empty Pot”. En este
cuento al emperador le encantan las flores. A la hora de elegir a su sucesor, decide
que “las flores tienen que elegir”. El emperador entrega semillas a todos los niños y les
dice que pongan todo su empeño en el cultivo de las flores. A Ping, el protagonista, le
gusta cultivar hermosas flores pero no tuvo mucha suerte con las semillas que le dio el
emperador. Los demás niños sí pudieron hacer crecer hermosas flores. El papá de Ping
le sugiere que le lleve al emperador su maceta vacía porque ha hecho todo lo que ha
podido. Entonces, el emperador declara a Ping como su futuro sucesor.
Después de que su hijo(a) haya terminado de leer “The Empty Pot”, quizá quieran
completar juntos la siguiente actividad para poder experimentar la alegría que Ping,
el emperador y los amantes de las flores de todo el mundo han sentido.
Experiencia floral
1. Vayan juntos a un vivero local y pregunten qué flores crecen bien en una maceta.
2. Siembren las semillas en una maceta con tierra.
3. Rieguen las semillas y pónganlas donde haya mucha luz.

empezar a crecer); blossom (florecer—aflorar); transferred (transferido—pasado
de transferir: trasladar algo o alguien de un lugar a otro); courage (valor—la fuerza
de superar un miedo).

favor, revise junto a su hijo(a) la escritura de estas palabras: cough, dough, fought,
