March 13, 2016 Page 2 PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I saw this reflection in The Blessings of Lent published by Twenty-third Publications and wanted to share it with you. LEARNING TO LET GO “I am the Resurrection and the Life … Do you believe this? John 11:25-26 Anne sat at her kitchen table exhausted and sad after her husband’s funeral. My wife and I sat with her, sharing her grief. It was important for us to be with her. Important for Anne, but important for us too. In a way, sharing her grief was a rehearsal for all the grieving times in our lives - a way of learning to let go in small ways so that we’ll be more ready for our own great letting go in death. Death. We all must face it, even Jesus. And our lives can be full of death long before we die. Addictions, sickness, hurting others - there’s no end to the ways death holds us. Today we celebrate the defeat of death. God’s will is not that people die. God’s will is that we will join in Christ’s saving life, slowly learning to surrender to God through all our sorrows and joys, so that dying in Him; we will be raised with Him. God’s will is that we believe Jesus is resurrection and life and that through Him we can be freed from death - now and in the resurrection to come. That’s what all our letting go is about. That’s the good news we celebrate. That’s the miracle. But it all hinges on how we answer the question Jesus asks all of us today: “I am the resurrection an the life. Do you believe?” Questions for Reflection: “Little” deaths help us trust in the resurrection … Do I believe this? What makes me doubt? What gives me hope? Fifth Sunday of Lent From the Servant’s Heart Thank you very much, Julie Bosdachin! On behalf of OLPH Church, I would like to thank you, Julie, for serving our community. We appreciate your years of assisting us in our liturgy and in so many other aspects of our faith life. We wish you all the best in your future plans. God bless you and your family. I'd like to also mention Angelina Montoya who's already been serving us for several months. Maria Bertieri assists our Business Manager, Betty Origel. Thank you so very much, Patty, Grace, Angelina, and Maria for answering the call of serving The People of God "With A Heart." Corporal Works of Mercy in The Year of Mercy Besides experiencing for ourselves God's boundless mercy this year through the Sacrament of Penance and in His countless blessings in spite of us, may we also be God's instruments for others to also experience His boundless mercy. This year is the perfect time to perform corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the prisoners, bury the dead, and give alms to the poor. In other words, we don't only receive His mercy. We also share it. New Members of our Rectory Family On behalf of our church, I'd like to welcome the newest members of the Rectory family. Patricia Inzunza is now our Parish Secretary. Grace Romero joined us a couple of weeks ago to serve with Patricia in the office. Patty will be a very good "Pat on the back." With Grace, we will be "full of Grace." Page 3 No Double Parking Please I would like to make this very urgent appeal: please do not douUS ble park. I believe this is a very serious concern we need to address. Please pray that all of our parishioners will take heed of this call. We just had a handicapped parishioner a couple of weeks ago who could not get out of her spot. God forbid something happens and we will be part of that untoward incident. Let's not wait for a tragedy or for an accident to happen before we do something about it. Thank you for your constant support! I would like to thank you for your constant support for our parish. Rain or shine, you've been with us. Thank you for your generous financial contributions and for all your prayers that enable OLPH to continue its mission of evangelizing and serving the spiritual needs of our people. Thank you very much for supporting our school. We owe it all to you. God bless! "Smooth seas don't make skillful sailors." “ LPH with a HEART” Fr. Joseph TENEBRAE - WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23 AT 7:30PM The word Tenebrae is Latin for “shadows” or “darkness.” From about the 5th century it was the practice for the church to be brightly illuminated on Holy Thursday. During the Good Friday service, all candles and lamps were gradually extinguished. On Holy Saturday, the church was in complete darkness. On Easter, a single candle is brought in again to illuminate the darkness. It is generally accepted that it was from this gradual extinguishing of the candles and lamps that the service that later came to be known as Tenebrae has evolved and incorporated in the nocturns (the psalms and canticles during the night office of the Liturgy of the Hours of the Holy Week celebrations). Today’s Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter) liturgy still has vestiges of this ancient practice. As the Tenebrae service proceeds, there are moments of silence and candles are progressively extinguished leaving only a single candle burning. All of this is meant to signify the efforts of Satan to remove the light of Christ from the world. At the end of the service the remaining candle is hidden, typifying the seeming victory of the forces of darkness. At the conclusion, a rumbling noise with a loud bang is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of Jesus death and the closing of the tomb. Then all depart in silence in the darkness. People are asked not to break the silence until they reach their respective homes. Similar to a walk-a-thon, the pledges students collect will go to Our Lady’s School’s general operating fund. This fund pays for a range of needs from utilities to maintenance and repairs to supplies. It’s time to start planning for Vacation Bible School! We are looking for adults and teens to volunteer for a good time this summer at our annual Vacation Bible School. sponsors Our Lady of Perpetual Help School would like to thank our supporters for the Olympic-A-Thon: GOLD LEVEL ($1000+): The Ad Art Company, Los Angeles ($1000) Provider Service, Los Angeles ($5000) SILVER LEVEL ($500 - $999): Del Rio Lanes Silver Level City Concepts Shoes, Culver City BRONZE LEVEL ($250 - $499): PBK Furniture So-CAL Freight FAITH BUILDING FORGIVENESS The advice, “forgive and forget” is not easy to follow. Forgiveness means letting go of your anger so you are free to heal. Do you need to forgive anyone? Pray for the grace to forgive as God forgives you: freely, totally and quickly. “He who knows how to forgive prepares for himself many graces from God. As often as I look upon the cross, so often will I forgive with all my heart.” St. Faustina Growing in Faith, February 2016, Copyright 2016 Success Publishing & Media, LLC The theme is “Cave Quest.” This promises to be an awesome experience. Call the Religious Education Office, if you are ready for the adventure at 562) 862-7268. We are in the midst of Lent. This is a time of reflection that should lead to changes in our lives. We have many catechetical programs here at OLPH. All of them run on volunteer hands and hearts. We have programs for ages 3 yearolds to adults who are looking for something to enrich their lives. Think about your life being transfigured through service to others. Prayerfully consider where you fit into this picture. Don’t wait or think you don’t have the ability or talent. We will give you the tools you need, all you need to do is call the Religious Education office at 562) 862-7268. Thank you We would like to extend our deep appreciation and gratitude to all of you dear people for the lovely Mass and sympathy cards, floral arrangements, plants, calls and visits because of the passing of our deeply beloved Nick Collaro. The outpouring of the love you displayed for Nick was absolutely overwhelming. Thank you so much and thank you Lord. God bless you all. Our love, the Collaro family Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 5 KIDS CORNER SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Jesus thanked God and told Lazarus to come out of the tomb. Lazarus rose from the dead and came out of the tomb. Many now believed Jesus was sent by God. BE PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY Directions: Connect the dots No matter how well you childproof your home or try to prevent accidents, one of the best things you can do is prepare yourself for an emergency. To help keep your kids safe, it's smart to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the abdominal thrust procedure (Heimlich maneuver). It’s helpful to assemble a first aid kit with emergency instructions and to keep important numbers near your phone such as poison control office, your pediatrician, your work, and a neighbor or nearby relative; and as soon as your child is old enough to know his/her own name and address, teach him or her to dial 9-1-1 to call for help in case of an emergency. BUILDING ON FAITH: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY LA DOWNEY BUILD KICKOFF MEETING Wednesday, March 16, 2016 7:00-8:30 PM Downey United Methodist Church 10801 Downey Ave. ¿Qué me hace dudar? ¿Qué me da esperanza?
