JULY SAINT OF MERCY
St. Monica, whose feast we celebrate in August, is often
known as “the persistent mother.” She watched her oldest
son, Augustine, turn his back on his Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For years she gave up talking
directly to her son on the advice of a local bishop, who told
her that it was better to talk to God about Augustine then to
Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up praying for her son. Eventually
Augustine gave up his wild ways, was baptized, and later ordained and named bishop of Hippo. St. Augustine went on to
become one of the Church’s greatest scholars.
Today’s readings address the importance of persistent
prayer. Abraham, in spite of trepidation that he is bothering
the Lord, continues to ask about the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, tells his disciples to “ask
and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened to you” (Luke 11:9). This is our charge:
keep praying.

Maria Goretti was the daughter of a poor Italian tenant
farmer.
One July day, Maria, not quite 12 years old, was mending a
shirt. A neighbor, Alessandro, 18 years old, seized her and
pulled her into a bedroom. She struggled, but Alessandro began striking at her with a dagger.
At the hospital, her last hours were marked by the worry for
others, including her attacker. She died 24 hours later.
Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was unrepentant. Then, he had a dream of Maria, gathering flowers for
him. His life changed. When he was released from prison, he
asked Maria’s mother for forgiveness.
At Maria’s canonization in 1950, a 66-year-old Alessandro
knelt among the quarter-million people to witness to her faith
and mercy.

Qué dijo el Papa hoy sobre las diaconisas?
Durante un encuentro, en el que se intercambiaron preguntas y respuestas, le preguntaron al Papa por qué la
Iglesia excluye a las mujeres de servir como diáconos.
Las religiosas explicaron al Pontífice que las mujeres
servían como diaconisas en la Iglesia primitiva y le preguntaron: “¿Por qué no constituir una comisión oficial
que pueda estudiar la cuestión?”. El Pontífice respondió
que ya había hablado una vez hace algunos años sobre
ese tema “con un profesor bueno y sabio”, que había
estudiado el papel de las diaconisas en los primeros siglos de la Iglesia. Francisco había explicado que no era
todavía claro qué papel tuvieron tales diaconisas. “¿Qué
eran estos diaconados femeninos?”, recordó el Papa
haber preguntado al profesor. “¿Tenían ordenación o
no?”. “Era un poco oscuro”, dijo. “¿Cuál era el papel
de la diaconisa en aquel tiempo?”, “¿Constituir una comisión oficial que pueda estudiar la cuestión?”, preguntó el Papa en voz alta. “Creo que sí. Sería por el bien
de la Iglesia clarificar este punto. Estoy de acuerdo.
Hablaré para hacer algo por el estilo”. “Acepto”, dijo el
Papa luego. “Me parece útil tener una comisión que lo
aclare bien”.
Según una tradición antiquísima, el diaconado venía dirigido “no al sacerdocio, sino al ministerio”. Existen
algunos testimonios de la historia sobre la presencia de
las diaconisas, tanto en la Iglesia occidental como en la
oriental. Los testimonios se refieren también a ritos litúrgicos de ordenación. El punto que se debería profundizar
es qué tipo de figura ministerial eran, cuáles eran las
funciones que desarrollaban en la comunidad. La posición del magisterio considera el diaconado como el primer grado del ministerio de la ordenación sacerdotal.

Are you interested in a peaceful, prayerful method of reaching
out to women and men entering the local abortion facility and
helping them to choose life? If so, Sidewalk Advocates for
Life might be for you! This “sidewalk counseling” program
uses a very compassionate, woman-oriented method to save
lives and help woman in unplanned pregnancies by offering
them more life-affirming options. Our next training will be

Parishioners are invited to attend Refugee Resettlement’s Multicultural Mass on July 31st which has been organized by Parishes Organized to Welcome refugees (POWR)
in collaboration with Assumption Catholic Church.
POWR is a grant funded program by United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Mass will be held in multiple languages with gift bearers who will be presenting from different
countries. Mass will start at 12:00 with a celebration following in Jordan Hall. Advance purchase is required for the

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Sometimes when bishops are consecrated, they are not
given the care of a diocese as an “ordinary.” A very old tradition, however, assures that they are invested with a “see,” a
link with a local church. Many hundreds of places around the
world were dioceses at one time, but are no longer. In England, for example, some of the historic dioceses such as London, Salisbury, and Manchester ceased to be Catholic at the
Reformation and their cathedrals passed to the Church of
England. The reestablishment of the Catholic Church in the
nineteenth century meant that new dioceses had to be created,
such as at Liverpool and Westminster. Similarly, in Scandinavia the ancient Catholic dioceses vanished under Lutheranism. In North Africa, tiny dioceses disappeared under the
sands or were swept away by Islam.
In the United States, some original dioceses never really
developed as population centers, such as the old dioceses of
Bardstown, Vincennes, Sault Ste. Marie, or Walla Walla. The
tradition of “titular sees” assures that the ancient churches
are always held in prayer, as the bishop celebrates Mass in its
memory a few times a year.
