Bilingual Spanish Reading Progress Monitoring: Letter Sounds Instructional Level Grade K Teacher & Student Resources (Adapted from DIBELS Next and IDEL) Letter Sounds Administration Process Say these specific directions to the student: Te voy enseñar unas letras. Quiero que pongas tu dedo en la letra y di su sonido. (Begin testing) Empieza aquí (point to the first letter on the page). Sigue así (Sweep your finger across the first two rows of letters) y di cada sonido del cada letra. Pon tu dedo en la primera letra. ¿Listo/a? Empieza. Timing Wait Discontinue Reminders Scoring Directions Calculating Final Score Determine Baseline Exit Criteria Frequency of progress monitoring 1 minute. Start your stopwatch after the student says the first word of the passage. Place a bracket ([]) and say PARA after one minute. If no response in 3 seconds, mark a slash (/) through the letter and say the correct letter sound. If no letters are sounded correctly in the first line, say PARA, record a score of “0.” If a student reads sounds letters from top to bottom, or points to letters randomly, say “Asi”. (Sweep your finger across the row) If the student skips letter sounds, say “Trata de decir el sonido de cada letra”. If the student says the name of the letter, say “Di el sonido, no el nombre de la letra” If the student stops (not a hesitation on a specific term), say “Sigue”. If the student loses his/her place, point. Student receives 1 point for each correct letter sound in a minute. Leave blank any letter sound a student said correctly. The lower case “L” may look like an upper case “I”. Give student point for either saying the sound of an “L” or “I”. Put a slash (/) over any incorrect letter sound. Inserted words, repeated words, and phrases are ignored and not counted as errors. A sound is scored as incorrect if it is initially misread, but if the student self-corrects within 3 seconds, mark SC above the letter and score as correct. If a student skips a row cross out the entire row and count the omitted sounds as errors. Add total sounds read correctly within the minute and record it next to Total Correct. Before implementing any intervention, student’s baseline must be calculated Administer (3) Letter Sounds Progress Monitoring lists. Determine Total Sounds Correct for each list. Choose the Total Sounds Correct MEDIAN (middle) score for the baseline. o For example, if a student scored a 10, 13, 11. Put in order from least to greatest and choose the middle score: Baseline would be 11. Fall– 7 sounds per minute Winter- 27 sounds per minute Spring- 37 sounds per minute Students should be progress monitored after every 5 intervention sessions. 2 Instructional Level Grade K Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 1 Total Sounds Correct: ___________ Response Patterns: (Check all that apply) Makes random errors Doesn’t track correctly Makes consistent errors on specific sound(s) Other ________________ Says letter name instead of letter sound 3 Instructional Level Grade K Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 2 Total Sounds Correct: ___________ Response Patterns: (Check all that apply) Makes random errors Doesn’t track correctly Makes consistent errors on specific sound(s) Other ________________ Says letter name instead of letter sound 4 Instructional Level Grade K Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 3 Total Sounds Correct: __________ Response Patterns: (Check all that apply) Makes random errors Doesn’t track correctly Makes consistent errors on specific sound(s) Other ________________ Says letter name instead of letter sound 5 Instructional Level Grade K Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 4 Total Sounds Correct: ___________ Response Patterns: (Check all that apply) Makes random errors Doesn’t track correctly Makes consistent errors on specific sound(s) Other ________________ Says letter name instead of letter sound 6 Instructional Level Grade K STUDENT PASSAGE Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 1 7 Instructional Level Grade K STUDENT PASSAGE Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 2 8 Instructional Level Grade K STUDENT PASSAGE Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 3 9 Instructional Level Grade K STUDENT PASSAGE Letter Sounds: Progress Monitoring 4 10
