These babies are not only cherished by their families, but recognized and protected as full members of their societies. The birth registration they receive will establish who they are, and guarantee their fundamental rights as citizens. With UNICEF’s support, this hospital in Venezuela’s Zulia State is among the first to be equipped with a birth registration unit, providing free and quick registration to all children born here. As part of a nationwide strategy called Trio for Life, birth registration, immunization and awareness on breastfeeding are also carried out in rural areas, so that children - especially the most impoverished and excluded - can all benefit. During this round of Trio for Life campaign, many children from the indigenous Wayuu community are immunized against common childhood diseases such as polio and measles. Community volunteers use the opportunity to educate mothers on breastfeeding, the best way to provide food to babies during the first six months of life. While the birth registration rate remains low in many parts of Venezuela, here in Maracaibo, capital city of Zulia State, it has reached 86 per cent.
