Dear Fellow Parishioners, “Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2) As the winter days get longer and the temperatures begin to rise, the Ash Wednesday Scriptures invite us into the season of Lent. The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. It is our forty day season of prepara+on for the Paschal Triduum (Holy Thursday evening through Easter Sunday). The Triduum celebrates the dying and rising of the Lord – God’s triumph over sin and death. We shared in the Lord’s dying and rising when we were bap+zed. We were adopted by God and given new life. And since we o2en fail to live as God’s children, we need the season of Lent to renew that life within us. Lent is a forty forty--day prepara+on for the renewal of our bap+sm at Easter. It is our annual opportunity to fine--tune our lives as disciples of the Lord Jesus. Lent fine calls us to focus our a5en+on on the things that really ma5er. How easy it is to let the urgent things of life distract us from the truly important things. Each Lent, our church holds those truly important things before us, challenging us to become the people we are called to become. Page 4 > Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18 ST. ISIDORE CATHOLIC CHURCH Hospitality · Prayer · Formaon · Service Hospitalidad · Oración · Formación · Servicio Look at our brand new website! www.ssidoreparish.org Catholic Lenten Practices Lent is the principle season of penance in the Chris-an year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self denial, (in addi-on to following the Lenten regula-ons), serious prayer, and performance of works of charity and mercy. • Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. • Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abs-nence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Ea-ng between meals is not permi7ed on these two days, but liquids including milk and fruit juices are allowed. Church law considers disregard of these prac-ces of our Faith tradi-on as seriously sinful because it separates one from the community’s spiritual prac-ces and from the person of Christ in His Body — the community of our Parish and the Universal Church.
