Hi I’m Kathy Hoglund, but most people know me as
“Trouble” (it’s all good trouble). My life changed in a
matter of seconds. I was working at a Maverick Countr y
store when 8 shots were fired through all my windows.
W hen I tur ned around, I had knife at my throat and a gun
pointed at my head. It was gang members that were
stealing beer and cigarettes. T hey told me if I called the
cops, they would kill me! W hen they were stealing the
beer, they noticed the cameras and took of f and I finally
got the ner ve to call the cops. Two years later I was in a
house fire that was set on pur pose for insurance money.
T he only good that came out of it was that I got a job at
a Holiday Inn that the Red Cross had put us in. In 2005 I
blew my right knee out and had 2 knee re placements. In
2008 I woke up paralyzed from the neck down. I was told
that I would never walk again but look at me now!
If I hadn’t had these obstacles to really value my
life, and had not been coming to Ability 1st Utah to the
classes they teach, I wouldn’t know how achieve my goals.
I have lear ned so much coming here. T hey have taught
and helped me so much to make me more of inde pendent
person and I love it! T his summer I’m going to star t
playing basketball again and swim at my pool ever y day.
If you put your mind to it and accomplish your goals,
whether they’re big or small, you can make it happen!

!! INFORMATION ABOUT TRANSPORTATION !!
There’ve been issues with people not following the policies for transportation, which are in place
for the safety of both passengers and the driver. They need to be followed by everyone. 3 Strike
Policy: If you don’t comply with the rules 3 times, you’ll be banned from riding the bus for 3
months. You can come to the activities but you’ll need to find other ways to get to the center.
Here are the policies in place:
1) Kathy will call you when she is 10-15 minutes away from your home. Take care of any personal
needs (medication, restroom, breakfast, etc.) and be outside before she arrives. If you keep
her waiting for 5 minutes, that’s a strike.
2) If you can't make it to an activity you signed up for, give us as much notice as possible. If you
cancel within two hours before the activity starts, it’s a strike.
3) The only food/drink allowed on the bus are those in sealed/spill-proof containers. If you make
a mess, you clean it up. Failure to do so is a strike.

OTHER THINGS ABOUT RESERVING FOR CLASS
 If we are closed Monday on a week you want to sign up for
(Example, for 4th of July), you can call the week before.
Otherwise, call the Monday of the week you want to come.
 Seats on the bus are limited, so transportation isn’t guaranteed.
Try to come to the center on your own, have someone you
know to bring you here, or use public transit.
 There’s no exact time of when Kathy will pick you up/drop you off.
It’s roughly a 2 hour window
before/after the activity (If it starts at noon, you could be picked up from 9:45 to 11:45. If it ends
at 2:00, you could be dropped off from 2:15 to 5:00). There’s no set order of whom she picks up
or drops off. It depends on other consumers as well as the route she has to take.
 When reserving transportation, tell us if you’re in a wheelchair/scooter or if you need to be
dropped off/picked up somewhere other than your home.

Hey Youth,
The summer program is going great! I hope
you are having as much fun as I am. We have
some more great activities planned. I just want
to note that some of these were not secured
when creating the calendar so they could be
changed.
Please remember that if you are sick, on
vacation, or just can’t make it to an activity, let
me know preferably 24 hours in advance or 8 AM
the day of the activity. Also we will be closed
July 4 for independence day and July 25th for
Pioneer day
Classes will begin August 18th for
Thursday Morning. EBPH classes may not start
until September. If you have any questions feel
free to call, text or email me.

Welcome to Summer 2016!...and it’s
getting hot outside. Please remember to
keep as cool as you can. Drink lots and lots
of water to keep you hydrated. Eating
light meals several times a day may be
better than eating large meals during the
day. Try to avoid activities during the hot
part of the day. Try to do those activities
later in the day when it is cooler.
Our branch office will be closed on
Monday, July 4th and Monday, July 25th.
Our annual BBQ will be held on Thursday,
August 11, 2016 again at the Orem Park.
We will be again partnering up with
consumers from the Provo office to make
Tie Dye shirts on Wednesday, July 20th.
Everybody loves tie dye so make sure you
don’t miss that activity. We will also be
going to the Aquarium with the Provo
consumers on Tuesday, August 30th. Call to
reserve your seat on the bus.
Remember if you have new goals or
need new services besides those in your
original independent living plan, please
don’t hesitate to contact me. We can
amend your plan to include new goals to
meet your needs.

“Ticket to Work” is a free, voluntary program
that can help Social Security beneficiaries go to
work, get a job that may lead to a career, and
become financially independent, all while
keeping their Medicare or Medicaid benefits.
Individuals who receive Social Security benefits
due to a disability and are 18 -64 years old
probably already qualify for this program. The “Ticket Program” is a good
fit for people who want to improve their earning potential and are
committed to prepare for long -term success in the workplace. “Ticket to
Work” offers beneficiaries with disabilities access to meaningful
employment with assistance of “Ticket to Work” employment service
providers called Employment Networks. Come in and see Janine or call
801-850-5560 to learn more about the “Ticket to Work” Program.
