Isabel - Apart from the weather everything is fine.
Phillip - Yes, the weather’s been not very nice here in Cambridge recently, but it’s gonna
change.
Isabel - ¡Yeah! Empieza el verano la semana que viene, ¿No? Casi en Agosto, un poco
tarde, pero bueno.
Phillip - Next week there’s gonna be a heatwave.
Isabel - Yeah, más vale tarde que nunca, how do you say that in English?
Phillip - Better late than never. So, what are we going to do today in this episode?
Isabel - Vamos a contar unas historias y nuestros oyentes tendran que intentar adivinar el
final, y tienen todas una moraleja, entonces es un podcast muy interesante hoy.
Phillip - Sí, a mi me gustan los cuentos con moralejas. Entonces, tú tienes una historia
and I also have a story, so do you want to tell us your story first?
Isabel - Sí, claro, se llama la ventana del hospital o the hospital window. And I’ll start
telling my story.
Phillip - Ok.
Isabel - So there were two old men in a hospital and they were both very ill and they were
staying in the same room.
Phillip - It’s a sad story.
Isabel - erm.... no, it has both, happiness and sadness.
Phillip - Ok
Isabel - And they were... one of them was called Walter and he was suffering from a
serious illness for a few months and he was put...his bed was right next to the window and
in the afternoon, he was usually sit up on the bed and he could see what was outside the
window for a couple of hours.
Phillip - He usually sat up

Isabel - Oh yes, sat up, yes. And then the other man in the same room, his name was
Frank and he had just been in the hospital for a week and he was in the other bed, so he
couldn’t see the window from his bed and also, because of his illness, he could never sit
up, so he was always laying down on the bed and he couldn’t see anything of what was
going out outside, so every afternoon, while Walter was sitting up he was telling his room
mate what was happening outside the window, so he was describing a park, with a very
nice lake, with ducks and swans, swimming in the water, children sailing with their boats,
couples walking amongst the trees.So he made these images of the outside world come to
life and Frank looked forward to the hour or two everyday when Walter was telling him all
these stories and bringing the beauty of the world outside to their boring and bland
hospital room.
Phillip - Oh that’s nice then, so he was describing what he saw outside for the man who
couldn’t see.
Isabel - But now, something sad happens.
Phillip - Oh
Isabel - Well Walter, the one that was telling the stories and looking outside the window,
he died, in English you can say in a more formal way, you can say, he passed away.
Phillip - It’s a nicer way to say die. So he passed away.
Isabel - In Spanish would be something like “fallecer” instead of “morir”, “morir” is like die.
“Fallecer” is more formal, more polite, so that would be more like pass away.
Phillip - Ok
Isabel - So, after Walter died his room mate was asked by the nurse if he wanted to move
to the other bed, because the other bed was free, was available, the bed next to the
window, so what do you think he said? What do you think?
Phillip - ah, mmm I’m not sure.
Isabel - Do you think he said yes or no?
Phillip - Maybe he said no, maybe he didn’t want to look out of the window.
Isabel - Do you think he would be disappointed with the view?
Phillip - Yeah, maybe he prefers to just keep it a memory, maybe. Or.. I don’t know, if I
was him I would probably like to see out of the window. I would probably say yes, because
if you are in a hospital it’s nice to have a look out the window, but I’m not sure yeah.
Isabel - Yes so he got a bit recovered.
Phillip - He recovered a bit.

Isabel - Yeah he recovered a bit and he was able to sit next to the window and he said yes I want to see what it’s outside, what he’s been telling me all this time. And then when
he sat on the bed and looked out the window, there was just a white wall, there was
nothing there, no lake...
Phillip - Just a wall.
Isabel - No swans, no trees...
Phillip - No nothing?
Isabel - Nothing.
Phillip - Ohh ok
Isabel - Then he realised his friend was blind, estaba ciego.
Phillip - Ahh
Isabel - So he was just making up all the stories, estaba inventándose todo.
Phillip - I see, so he must have been quite disappointed when he looked out the window,
he must have been anticipating seeing a beautiful lake with swans and children playing
and instead he saw a wall.
Isabel - Yeah I suppose he was disappointed, but also he was happy for all that time that
his friend gave him and all the stories and how he made him feel positive and recover.
Phillip - Yeah I like that story, that’s quite a nice story. But what is the “moraleja”? The
moral of the story.
Isabel - I think it’s like... beauty is not always seen with your eyes. (it) Can be felt as well.
If you have your mind, then nothing can stop you.
Phillip - Could be yeah, or don’t trust blind people, because the lie, maybe.
Isabel - That’s a bit cruel Phillip.
Phillip - OK
Isabel - Do you have a story for me and for our listeners?
Phillip - Yeah, I’ve got a story, it’s about a woman who, she was working all day in the city
and she was very tired and so she decided one day to get in her car and just drive to the
nearest beach.
Isabel - What is it called your story?

Phillip - It’s called starfish.
Isabel - Ahh that means “estrella de mar”, doesn’t it?
Phillip - Yeah that’s right.
Isabel - Interesting.
Phillip - And so she was in her car and she was driving for about an hour and she arrived
at the beach and it was sort of early evening and the tide was at its highest point.
Isabel - “La marea”
Phillip - Yes, so she was walking along the beach enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and
she could see a man who was throwing something into the sea and as she got closer, she
realised that he was throwing a star fish into the sea and she looked around and she
noticed that there were thousands of starfish that had been washed up on to the beach,
and this man was frantically trying to throw as many as he could.
Isabel - To save them.
Phillip - Yeah, and so she started getting closer to the man and when she arrived pretty
closed to the man she asked him, what are you doing, why are you throwing this starfish
into the sea, I don’t think you’re gonna make much difference, because there’s thousands
of starfish here and so she said, what difference could you possibly make throwing this
starfish into the sea? And...
Isabel - What did he say?
Phillip - What do you think he said? Any idea?
Isabel - Mmm
Phillip - How do you think the story could end?
Isabel - It’s a bit weird this story. I don’t know.
Phillip - He must have said something to her, maybe...
Isabel - Well I supposed he said, well if you can do something to save someone or
something’s life do it, it’s better something than nothing.
Phillip - Yeah, yeah or maybe he said....
Isabel - Why don’t you help me and stop asking?
Phillip - Yeah, why don’t you stop asking questions and help me? Maybe or... yeah it’s not
easy, but would you like to hear the real ending?
Isabel - Yes.

Phillip - Well what happened was after she asked this question, he picked up another
starfish.
Isabel - And threw it on her face (laugh).
Phillip - No, he didn’t throw it on her face, but after she asked this question, what
difference does it make? He picked up one more starfish, threw it into the sea and said - it
made a big difference for that starfish.
Isabel - Wow
Phillip - Do you like that?
Isabel - Yes.
Phillip - It’s quite a nice story as well, it’s a happier story than your story I think.
Isabel - Yes, it’s happier, yeah.
Phillip - But what do you think the moral is? Any idea? mmm
Isabel - Yeah well it’s like what is...err maybe not very important for you can be very very
important for someone else.
Phillip - Yeah yeah.
Isabel - It’s like she was thinking in a selfish way no? Thinking why should you be
bothered to make such a big effort to do this when most of them are going to die? But what
about the ones you can save, no?
Phillip - Yeah absolutely. And it’s an important lesson I think. And so these are out two
stories for today and I think we got the morals right, but if you think you have a better ideas

Phillip - Sí, a mi me gustan los cuentos con moralejas. Entonces, tú tienes una historia y
yo también tengo una historia, entonces, ¿quieres contarnos tu historia primero?
Isabel - Sí, claro, se llama la ventana del hospital, empezaré contando mi historia.
Phillip - Vale.
Isabel - Entonces, había dos hombre muy mayores en un hospital y los dos estaban muy
enfermos y estaban en la misma habitación.
Phillip - Es una historia triste.
Isabel - Erm.... no, tiene ambas, felicidad y tristeza.
Phillip - Vale
Isabel - Y había, uno de ellos se llamaba Walter y estaba sufriendo una enfermedad seria,
durante unos cuantos meses y estaba, su cama estaba justo al lado de la ventana y por la
tarde, el estaba normalmente sentarse (sit up) en la cama y podía ver lo que había fuera
de la ventana, durante unas horas.
Phillip - Normalmente se sentaba (sat up)

Isabel - Ah sí, se sentaba sí. Y el otro hombre en la misma habitación, se llamaba Frank y
solo había estado en el hospital una semana y el estaba en la otra cama, entonces no
podía ver la ventana desde su cama y también, debido a su enfermeda no podía sentarse
nunca, por tanto estaba siempre tumbado en la cama y no podía ver nada de lo que
estaba pasando fuera, entonces cada tarde, mientras Walter se sentaba, le estaba
contando a su compañero de habitación lo que estaba pasando fuera de la ventana,
estaba describiendo un parque, con un lago muy bonito, con patos, cisnes, nadando en el
agua, niños navegando con sus barcas, parejas andando entre los árboles, así que el
creo estas imágenes del mundo exterior y las hizo revivir y Frank esperaba la hora o dos
cada día cuando Walter le contaba todas estas historias y traía la belleza del mundo
exterior a su habitación aburrida y sosa del hospital.
Phillip - Oh entonces eso es bonito, entonces el estaba describiendo lo que veía fuera
para el hombre que no podía ver.
Isabel - Pero ahora... pasa algo triste.
Phillip - Oh
Isabel - Walter, el que estaba contando las historia y mirando fuera de la ventana, murió,
en inglés se puede decir de una forma más formal, “he passed away”, el falleció
Phillip - Es una forma más delicada de decir morir. Entonces el falleció.
Isabel - En español sería algo así como fallecer en vez de morir. Fallecer es más formal,
más educado.
Phillip - Vale.
Isabel - Entonces después de que Walter muriera, a su compañero de habitación, le
preguntó la enfermera si quería moverse a la otra cama, porque la otra cama estaba libre,
estaba disponible, la cama al lado de la ventana, y ¿qué crees que dijo el? ¿qué piensas?
Phillip - ah, mmm I’m not sure.
Isabel - ¿Crees que dijo que sí o que no?
Phillip - Igual dijo que no, igual no quería mirar fuera de la ventana.
Isabel - ¿Crees que estaría decepcionado con la vista?
Phillip - Sí, igual prefiere mantenerlo como un recuerdo, quizás, o, no sé, si yo fuera el, a
mí probablemente me hubiera gustado mirar fuera de la ventana. Yo seguramente diría
que sí, porque si estás en un hospital es bonito echar un vistazo fuera de la ventana, pero
no estoy seguro.
Isabel - Sí, entonces se recuperó un poco...
Phillip - “He recovered a bit”
Isabel - Fue capaz de sentarse fuera de la ventana y dijo - sí, quiero ver lo que hay fuera,
lo que él me ha estado contando todo este tiempo. Y entonces, cuando se sentó en la
cama y miró fuera, solo había una pared blanca, no había nada, ni lago...

Phillip - Just a wall.
Isabel - Ni cisnes, ni árboles...
Phillip - Nada de nada?
Isabel - Nada.
Phillip - Ohh vale
Isabel - Entonces se dió cuenta de que su amigo era ciego.
Phillip - Ahh
Isabel - Entonces, el se estaba inventando todas estas historias, se estaba inventando
todo.
Phillip - Ya veo, pues tuvo que estar muy decepcionado cuando miró por la ventana, tiene
que haber estado anticipando ver un lago precioso con cisnes y niños jugando y en vez
de eso, solo vió una pared.
Isabel - Sí, supongo que se decepcionó, pero también estaba contento por todo ese
tiempo que su amigo le dió y todas las historia y de que forma le hizo sentirse positivo y
recuperarse.
Phillip - Sí, me gusta esa historia, es una historia bastante bonita. Pero, ¿cuál es la
moraleja?
Isabel - You creo que es que la belleza no siempre se ve con los ojos. También se puede
sentir. Si tienes tu mente, nada puede pararte.
Phillip - Puede ser, sí, o no te fíes de la gente ciega, porque mienten, quizás.
Isabel - Eso es un poco cruel Phillip.
Phillip - Ok
Isabel - ¿Tú tienes alguna historia para mí y nuestros oyentes?
Phillip - Sí, tengo una historia, es sobre una mujer que, había estado trabajando todo el
día en la ciudad y decidió un día meterse en el coche y conducir hasta la playa más
cercana.
Isabel - ¿Cómo se llama tu historia?
Phillip - Se llama estrella de mar.
Isabel - Interesante.
Phillip - Y entonces ella estaba en su coche conduciendo durante una hora y llegó a la
playa y era por la tarde y la marea estaba en su punto más alto. Entonces ella estaba
andando por la playa disfrutando de la atmósfera relajante y pudo ver a un hombre que

estaba tirando algo en el mar y según se fue acercando, se dió cuenta de que estaba
tirando una estrella de mar al mar y miró alrrededor y se dió cuenta de que había miles de
estrellas de mar que habían sido arrastradas hasta la playa, y este hombre estaba tirándo
al mar todas las que podía desesperadamente.
Isabel - Para salvarlas.
Phillip - Sí y por tanto empezó a acercarse al hombre y cuando llegó muy cerca del
hombre, le preguntó - ¿qué estás haciendo? ¿por qué estás tirando esta estrella de mar al
mar? No creo que vayas a hacer mucha diferencia, porque hay miles de estrellas de mar
aquí, y ella dijo - ¿qué diferencia podría hacer tirar una estrella de mar en el mar? Y...
Isabel - ¿Qué dijo él?
Phillip - ¿Qué crees que dijo? ¿alguna idea?
Isabel - Mmm
Phillip - ¿Cómo piensas que podía acabar la historia?
Isabel - Es una historia un poco rara, no se.
Phillip - El ha tenido que decirle algo.
Isabel - Bueno, supongo que dijo, bueno si puedes hacer algo para salvar la vida de
alguien o algo hazlo, es mejor algo que nada.
Phillip - Sí, sí o igual dijo....
Isabel - ¿Por qué no me ayudas y dejar de preguntar?
Phillip - Sí, ¿por qué no dejas de hacer preguntas y me ayudas? igual o... sí no es fácil,
pero ¿te gustaría saber el final real?
Isabel - sí.
Phillip - Bueno, lo que pasó, después de que el hiciera esta pregunta, el cogió otra
estrella de mar.
Isabel - Y la tiró en su cara (risas).
Phillip - No, no la tiró en su casa, pero después de que ella hiciera esta pregunta - ¿qué
diferencia hace? El, cogió otra estrella de mar, la lanzó al mar y dijo - hizo una gran
diferencia para esa estrella de mar.
Isabel - Wow
Phillip - ¿Te gusta?
Isabel - Sí.
Phillip - Es una historia muy bonita, creo que es una historia más feliz que la tuya.

Isabel - Sí, es más feliz.
Phillip - ¿Pero cuál piensas que es la moraleja? ¿alguna idea? mmm
Isabel - Sí, bueno es quizás que algo que no es muy importante para tí puede ser muy
importante para otra persona. Es como que ella estaba pensando de forma egoísta,
¿porque iba a hacer un esfuerzo, si la mayoría de ellas iban a morir? Pero, ¿qué pasa con
las que puedes salvar?
Phillip - Sí, totalmente. Y creo que es una lección importante. Y entonces, estas son
nuestras dos historias por hoy y pienso que tenemos la moraleja correcta, pero si piensas
