Volvemos a contar la historia cambiando la perspectiva.
Empezamos desde el punto de vista de Dorothy
en el tiempo pasado.
Let's tell the story again from a different point of view.
Let's start with the point of view of Dorothy
in the past tense.
Hace muchos años yo vivía
con mi tío Henry y tía Em, su mujer.
Many years ago, I used to live
with my uncle Henry and my aunt Em – Henry's wife.
Eran mi única familia,
porque no tenía padres.
They were my only family,
because I didn't have any parents.
Vivíamos en las grandes praderas de Kansas y éramos
granjeros. Teníamos una casa muy pequeña.
We lived in the Great Plains of Kansas and were
farmers. We had a tiny house.

Continuamos en el tiempo presente.
Let's continue the story, though now in the present tense.
La pequeña casa es
de una habitación y no hay muchas cosas en ella.
The tiny house has one room
and there aren't many things inside it.
En la casa hay pocos muebles: una mesa, un armario
There isn't a lot of furniture inside the house – a table,

y tres o cuatro sillas alrededor de la mesa.
a cupboard and three or four chairs around the table.
La mesa está en frente de la ventana.
The table is in front of the window.
El armario está a la izquierda de la mesa.
The cupboard is to the left of the window.
También tenemos dos camas,
una para mí y otra para mis tíos.
We also have two beds,
one for me and another for my uncle and aunt.

Ahora la historia está en el tiempo perfecto pasado.
Now we'll tell part of the story in the present perfect tense.
Cada mañana, desde que era muy pequeña, Dorothy
ha mirado por la ventana que daba al pequeño
jardín, pero nunca ha visto nada interesante.
Every morning, since she was very young, Dorothy
has looked out the window that overlooked the little
garden, but she's never seen anything interesting.
En el jardín no hay ni árboles ni flores.
Ni siquiera la hierba es verde.
In the garden there are neither trees nor flowers.
The grass isn't even green.
Siempre ha tenido color gris.
Todo en sus vidas ha sido de color gris, muy triste.
It's always been grey.
Everything in their lives has been grey and very sad.
Durante años. El tío Henry y la tía Em
han trabajado mucho.
For years, Uncle Henry and Aunt Em
have worked very hard.

Han empezado muy temprano y han acabado
tarde por la noche, y nunca se han reído.
They've begun very early and have finished
late at night, and have never laughed.

The last part will be told in the future tense.
Pero a pesar de todas las dificultades
Dorothy será feliz porque tendrá un amigo.
But despite all her troubles, Dorothy
will be happy because she will have a friend.
Su amigo será un perro de color negro llamado Totó.
Her friend will be a black dog named Toto.
Tendrá el pelo largo,
los ojos brillantes y la cola corta.
He will have long fur,
bright eyes and a short tail.
El perro y la niña correrán
y jugarán todos los días.
The dog and the girl will run
around and play every day.
Serán los mejores amigos
y se entenderán uno al otro sin palabras.
They will be best friends and
will be able to understand each other without words.
