En el siglo VIII, el rey Mauregato había prometido a los musulmanes entregarles cien doncellas cada año para que se
casasen con ellas. El rey elegía a las doncellas más bellas del reino para ser entregadas. Un grupo de guerreros recorría
ciudades y pueblos para elegir a las doncellas y llevárselas a la fuerza.
In the eighth century Mauregato the king had promised the Muslims to delivered hundred maidens each year to marry
them. The king chose the most beautiful maidens from the kingdom. A group of warriors went through towns and villages to
choose the maidens and take them by force.
Un día los guerreros se enteraron de que en Illas (Avilés) había una joven muy bella y fueron a buscarla. Belinda, que
así se llamaba la chica, los recibió amablemente. Pero cuando la capturaron les ofreció bailar para ellos una danza maravillosa.
Con una condición, tenía que ser en el campo, a la luz de la luna.
One day the soldiers learned that in Illas (Avilés) there was a beautiful young woman and they went looking for her.
Belinda, which was her name, received them kindly. But when they captured her, she offered to perform a wonderful dance
for them on the condition that she would dance in the field, under the moon light.
Los guerreros accedieron y salieron al campo esa misma noche. Entonces la joven corrió desesperadamente hasta una
fuente cercana para esconderse. Cuando llegó a la fuente oyó con sorpresa como de su interior salía una voz que le decía: “Si
quieres ser tu mi xana, vivirás días dichosos”. La joven preguntó qué debía hacer para convertirse en xana. “Bebe un sorbo de
mi agua” contestó la misma voz. Belinda así lo hizo y se convirtió en una joven de belleza sobrenatural.
The warriors agreed and took her to the field that night. Then the young woman ran away to the nearest fountain to
hide. When she reached the fountain she was surprised to hear a voice coming from the fountain saying: “If you want to be
my xana, you will live happily ever after”. The young girl asked what she should do to become a water fairy. “Take a sip of my
water” answered the voice. Belinda did and she became a extremely beautiful young girl.
Cuando los soldados llegaron al lugar e intentaron capturarla de nuevo, la joven xana los miró con sus maravillosos ojos
verdes e inmediatamente todos los soldados se convirtieron en ovejas
When the soldiers arrived at the scene and tried to capture her again, the young water fairy looked at them with her
wonderful green eyes and immediately all the soldiers turned to sheep.
El rey como veía que los soldados no regresaban se dirigió con todos sus soldados a Illas. Cuando llegó, pudo ver una
gran cantidad de ovejas pastando tranquilamente alrededor de una fuente en la que se encontraba una joven muy hermosa. El
rey le preguntó si había visto a sus soldados. La xana respondió que él no había enviado soldados sino corderos.
As the king saw that his soldiers did not return he went with the rest of his soldiers to Illas. When he arrived there,
he saw a lot of sheep grazing peacefully around the fountain where the beautiful young girl was. The king asked her if she
had seen his soldiers. The water fairy replied that he had not sent soldiers but sheep.
