COST is the oldest and widest European intergovernmental framework for transnational Cooperation in Science and Technology. For 40 years COST has supported networking of research activities across all its Member countries (36 today) and beyond. COST is open to all disciplines, to all novel and ground-breaking S&T ideas, to all categories of partners, to the world where mutual benefit is real. 2 What is COST Mission? COST enables breakthrough scientific developments leading to new concepts and products. It thereby contributes to strengthen Europe’s research and innovation capacities. 3 What are COST Principles? Highest S&T Quality S&T-driven (bottom-up) Transdisciplinarity Young researchers Sharing knowledge Inclusive Leverage 4 What are COST features? Intergovernmental Pan-European Open to global cooperation on the base of mutual interest Light-weight administration Easy implementation 5 COST Strengths networking of researchers (its Actions), which are open to: all fields of S&T (including interdisciplinary, new and emergent fields) any novel and original idea (innovative) all partners (public and private, big and small) all career stages (young and senior investigators) all countries (small and big, leader and follower countries), and to non-COST countries (fostering international cooperation) 6 COST in Figures Established in 1971 19 founding COST countries now 35 + 1 Cooperating State 4 reciprocal agreements with NonCOST countries 250 MEUR of FP7 7 COST Organisation Governance Operations EC Grant Agreement FP7 8 COST Countries The 28 EU Member States EU Acceding & Candidate Countries former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Iceland Republic of Serbia Turkey Other Countries Bosnia and Herzegovina Norway Switzerland COST Cooperating States Israel 9 Country participation in COST Actions Bosnia and Herzegovina Luxembourg Malta Iceland Latvia Cyprus Estonia The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Lithuania Slovakia Croatia Bulgaria Turkey Serbia Slovenia Romania Hungary Czech Republic Israel Austria Norway Ireland Sweden Finland Portugal Poland Netherlands Denmark Switzerland Greece Belgium France Italy Spain Germany United Kingdom 35 43 69 72 77 81 Total running Actions 2012: 301 90 92 108 115 137 139 145 149 163 165 174 181 194 204 214 215 220 243 245 250 250 250 251 258 259 288 294 296 297 300 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 10 Near Neighbour countries participation 165 Participations in running COST Actions (16 countries) – May 2013 Russia (47) Belarus (5) Moldova (2) Ukraine (31) Montenegro (7) Georgia (6) Albania (13) Azerbaijan (4) COST Countries Morocco (12) Armenia (4) Syria (1) Tunisia (10) Lebanon (7) NN countries Jordan (1) Algeria (7) Egypt (8) 11 International Partner Countries Participation in COST Actions excluding Near Neighbour Countries Canada (39) China (27) Japan (12) USA (109) Iraq (1) Mexico (9) Costa Rica (1) Rep of Korea (3) Saudi Arabia (1) Pakistan (3) UAE (1) India (07) Sudan (1) Colombia (2) Taiwan (1) Hong Kong (2) Thailand (1) Bangladesh (1) Singapore (3) Peru (1) Brazil (11) only one Action COST Countries Indonesia (1) Chile (3) Mauritius (1) Namibia (1) Uruguay (1) Australia (112) South Africa (36) RA Countries Argentina (29) New Zealand (62) 482 Participations in running Actions (31 countries) – May 2013 12 COST Action At least 5 countries Expanding networks Average 20 countries Across 9 Domains or interdisciplinary Obtains funds for networking research activities 13 COST Action networking tools Science management meetings Working Group meetings Scientific workshops & seminars Training schools Scientific Exchange Visits (STSMs) Dissemination + publications 14 COST Action - Statistics 2012 300 Actions (943 since 1971) > 1000 scientific workshops and meetings > 15-20 000 participants 1250 STSMs ~ 3 weeks > 90 Training Schools > 1200 participants COST cited in around 1400 peer review publications (2010) 15 COST Office Scientific and technical implementation of COST activities Science operations: Domain Committees COST Actions Strategic activities: S&T-driven Policy-driven Communication policy 16 Developing space weather products and services in Europe COST Action ES0803 Develop reliable European Space Weather forecasts Near real time space weather information 17 European procedures for flood frequency estimation (FloodFreq) COST Action ES0901 Compile dataset and inventories of existing data and methods Use of statistical methods for flood frequency estimation Flood frequency analysis using rainfallrunoff methods Flood frequency estimation methods and environmental change 18 Euroberry Research: from Genomics to Sustainable Production, Quality & Health Berry production is economically significant COST helped berry growers to grow Specific thematic area has been included in FP7 COST Action 863 19 COST Action 219 ter How new telecommunications can benefit people with disabilities Accessible communication infrastructure Smart houses Equipment design 20 COST Action P9 Sunshine makes water safer to drink Radiation Damage in Biomolecular Systems Solar Disinfection (SODIS) 1 Mio Bacteria to 0 EU Millennium Development Goals EU Water Initiative (EUWI) World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) Implementation Plan 21 www.cost.eu Domain pages: e.g. www.cost.eu/bmbs Open Call: www.cost.eu/opencall Guidelines: www.cost.eu/guidelines FAQ: www.cost.eu/service/faq Reciprocal Agreements: www.cost.eu/about_cost/reci procal_agreements Library: www.cost.eu/library Events: www.cost.eu/events 22 COST News by e-mail?
