“We Walk in the Footsteps of Christ and Set Hearts on Fire”
The heart has always been seen as the "center" or essence a person ("the heart of the matter," "you
are my heart," "take it to heart," etc.) and the wellspring of our emotional lives and love ("you break my heart,"
"my heart sings," etc.) Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is devotion to Jesus Christ Himself, but in the
particular ways of meditating on his interior life and on His threefold love -- His divine love, His burning love
that fed His human will, and His sensible love that affects His interior life.
Pope Pius XII of blessed memory writes on this topic in his 1956 encyclical, Haurietis Aquas (On Devotion
To The Sacred Heart).
The Friday that follows the Second Sunday in Time after Pentecost is the Feast of the Sacred Heart
which brings to mind all the attributes of His Divine Heart mentioned above. Many Catholics prepare for this
Feast by beginning a Novena to the Sacred Heart on the Feast of Corpus Christi, which is the Thursday of the
week before. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart itself, we can gain a plenary indulgence by making an Act of
Reparation to the Sacred Heart.
From the earliest days of the Church, "Christ's open side (wound) and the mystery of blood and water
were meditated upon, and the Church was beheld issuing from the side of Jesus, as Eve came forth from the
side of Adam. It is in the eleventh and twelfth centuries that we find the first unmistakable indications of
devotion to the Sacred Heart. Through the wound in the side, the wound in the Heart was gradually reached,
and the wound in the Heart symbolized the wound of love." (Catholic Encyclopedia)
This general devotion arose first in Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries of that time, especially in
response to the devotion of St. Gertrude the Great, but specific devotions became popularized when St.
Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647-1690), a Visitation nun, had a personal revelation involving a series of visions
of Christ as she prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. She wrote, "He disclosed to me the marvels of his Love
and the inexplicable secrets of his Sacred Heart." Christ emphasized to her His love -- and His woundedness
caused by Man's indifference to this love.
He made 12 promises in response to those who consecrate themselves and make reparations to His
Sacred Heart, that:












He will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.
He will establish peace in their homes.
He will comfort them in all their afflictions.
He will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.
He will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.
Sinners will find in His Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.
Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.
He will bless every place in which an image of His Heart is exposed and honored.
He will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.
Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in His Heart.
In the excessive mercy of His Heart that His all-powerful love will grant to all those who
receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final
perseverance; they shall not die in His disgrace, nor without receiving their sacraments. His
divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.
Twelve promises of indescribable, unspeakable Power! How can we not become part of this loving,
persuasive devotion?

“Caminamos en las Huellas de Cristo y ponemos los corazones a arder”
El corazón siempre se ha visto como el “centro” o esencia de una persona (“lo importante del asunto,” “eres
mi corazón,” “llévalo al corazón,” etc.) y como la fuente de nuestras vidas amorosas y emocionales (“me
quiebras el corazón,” “mi corazón canta,” etc.) La devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús es una devoción a
Jesucristo mismo, pero en formas particulares de meditar en su vida interior y en su amor triple –Su amor
divino, su ardiente amor que alimentó su voluntad humana, y su amor sensible que afecta su vida interior.
El Papa Pio XII de una memoria bendita escribe sobre este tema en su encíclica de 1956, Haurietis
Aquas (en Devoción al Sagrado Corazón).
El viernes después al Segundo domingo después de Pentecostés es la Fiesta del Sagrado Corazón el cual
trae a la mente todos los atributos de Su Divino Corazón mencionados. Muchos católicos se preparan para
esta fiesta empezando una Novena al Sagrado Corazón en la Fiesta de Corpus Cristi (la Fiesta del Cuerpo
de Cristo), la cual es el jueves a la semana anterior. En la fiesta del Sagrado Corazón, podemos obtener
una indulgencia plenaria al hacer un Acto de Reparación al Sagrado Corazón.
Desde los principios de la Iglesia, “la apertura del costado de Cristo (la herida) y el misterio de la
sangre y el agua fueron meditados, y la Iglesia fue contemplada como proveniente del costado de Jesús,
así como Eva vino del costado de Adán. Fue en el siglo once y en siglo doce que encontramos las primeras
indicaciones inequívocas de la devoción al Sagrado Corazón. Por medio de la herida de su costado, se
llegó a la herida del corazón, y la herida en el Corazón simbolizó la herida de amor.” (Enciclopedia
Católica)
Esta devoción general surgió primero en los monasterios Benedictus y monjes de esos tiempos, en
respuesta a la devoción de Santa Gertrudis la Grande, pero estas devociones se volvieron populares
cuando Santa Margarita Maria Alacoque (1647-1690) una monja que estaba como visitante tuvo una
revelación personal en la que tuvo una serie de visiones de Cristo mientras oraba frente al Santísimo
Sacramento ella escribió, “El me reveló las maravillas de su amor y los secretos inexplicables de su
Sagrado Corazón.” Donde Cristo enfatizó su amor – y sus heridas causadas por la indiferencia del hombre
a su amor.
A los que se consagraron al Sagrado Corazón. Jesús ofrece 12 promesas:












Él les dará todas las gracias necesarias en su estado de vida.
El establecerá paz en sus hogares.
El los consolara en sus aflicciones.
El será su refugio seguro durante la vida, pero más que nada, en la muerte.
El derramara abundantes bendiciones sobre todas sus tareas/responsabilidades.
Los pecadores encontraran en su corazón la fuente y el océano infinito de misericordia.
Las almas tibias se volverán fervorosas.
Las almas fervientes alcanzaran rápidamente una alta perfección.
El bendecirá cada lugar en el cual una imagen de su Sagrado Corazón sea expuesto y honrado.
El dará a los sacerdotes el regalo de tocar hasta los corazones más endurecidos.
Aquellos que promuevan esta devoción tendrán sus nombres escritos en Su Corazón.
En la misericordia excesiva de Su Corazón que su amor todopoderoso dará a todos aquellos quienes
reciban la Santa Comunión cada Primer Viernes del mes por nueve meses consecutivos la gracia de la
perseverancia final; ellos no morirán sin Su gracia, ni sin recibir sus sacramentos. Su divino corazón será
un refugio seguro en sus últimos momentos
¡Doce promesas de poder indescriptible o inexpresable! ¿Cómo no hacernos parte de esta amorosa y
persuasiva devoción?
