This unit focuses on the theme of ‘Festivos españoles’. The focus on Spanish festivals/holidays highlights the importance in the new GCSE AQA 8698 Specification on culture in language learning. Pupils will begin to understand the different days of importance in Spain, and when and why they are celebrated. Each week will be dedicated to a specific celebration where pupils will gain understanding and mastery in the celebration as well as key Spanish language related to such celebrations. Pupils will continue to enhance the language they have already learned as well as develop this into higher level language understanding. Pupils will follow the same learning plan from the academic arc, whilst gaining a new and refreshing outlook on a more practical way of learning a new language. We will focus on home town neighbourhood and region, related to Theme 2 3.1.2 (Local, national, international and global areas of interest) of the new GCSE 8698 Specification from AQA. How do Spanish festivals have an influence on Spanish society? Week 1: Spanish autonomous communities play a large role in influencing regional culture. Week 2: There is no divide between the north and south of Spain. Week 3: The European Union influences autonomous communities. Week 4: The introduction of the ‘AVE’ has strengthened ties between different Spanish regions. Week 5: There is no simple definition for an autonomous community. Week 6/7 – pupils will focus on a project related to the autonomous communities. Week 1: Spanish autonomous communities play a large role in influencing regional culture. Pupils will: Describe positions of places in a town. Find out about different cities in Spain and decipher what there is there. Make a dialogue between two people asking for and giving directions. Places of interest in town. ¿Dónde está? ... está al lado de Week 3 – one hour per week Carnivales de Cádiz Week 3: The European Union influences autonomous communities. Pupils will: Understand how to describe what you can do in a town. Say where you go in town. Make a booklet saying what you can do in a Spanish city. Linguistic features to consider: Se puede, no se puede + infinitive. Voy a + la biblioteca / al supermercado. Week 4 – one hour per week La Feria de Sevilla Week 4: The introduction of the ‘AVE’ has strengthened ties between different Spanish regions. Pupils will: Give opinions about what you think about specific Spanish cities. Discuss the AVE and what it is and how it brings cities closer together using opinions in Spanish. Use the imperfect tense to describe what a city you have visited was like. Linguistic features to consider: Me gusta / no me gusta Pienso que / creo que / no pienso que / no creo que Imperfect tense – era / tenía. Week 5 – one hour per week La Pascua Week 5: There is no simple definition for an autonomous community. Pupils will: Define an autonomous community and compare it to regions in England or the UK. Debate about country living versus city living. Pupils put into groups with a specific village/city/ town and they will argue for or against living there with opinions and justifications. Linguistic features to consider: Estoy a favor de / estoy en contra de Estoy de acuerdo con / no estoy de acuerdo con Prefiero la ciudad / el pueblo / el campo etc. Week 6/7 – one hour per week Navidades Week 6/7 – pupils will focus on a project related to the autonomous communities. Pupils will: In pairs, be given an autonomous community in Spain. Research this community and find out where it is and why it plays an important role in Spanish society. They will make a keynote presentation with information in English about this region as well as foods, drinks and regional language that is pertinent to said place. This keynote will be marked according to a success criteria.
