QUERIDOS AMIGOS
protagonistas.
Instituto Cervantes de Manila, the cultural
arm of the Embassy of Spain, makes its
cultural and academic program for February
and March 2016 available to you. From our
facilities in the heart of Makati, we invite
you to visit us and enjoy our Library, and
the classrooms for Spanish classes.
In 2016, we commemorate the 400th
anniversary of Miguel de Cervantes’
death, whose work we shall be celebrating
throughout the year. This will be a year full
of cultural events where performing arts,
exhibitions and literature in Spanish will
receive special attention.
In March, we will be visited by the renowned
Spanish novelist Marta Sanz, who besides
giving a lecture in Instituto Cervantes shall
also be participating in a symposium on the
craft of writing with the Philippine poet
Marjorie Evasco.
Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) traerá a
Filipinas la gran exposición TAPAS, que se
expondrá en el Metropolitan Museum de
Manila.
Acción Cultural Española [AC/E] will be
bringing in the exhibition TAPAS, to the
Philippines. TAPAS will be displayed at the
Metropolitan Museum of Manila.
Global. Ofrecemos cursos de español para
negocios, cursos de traducción, de formación
de profesores... No te olvides, si eres extranjero
y quieres aprender filipino, en el Instituto
Cervantes podrás aprenderlo también.
Our academic department reinforces
its varied program of Spanish language
courses. The DELE (Diploma of Spanish
as a Foreign Language) is still the best
way to validate the level of Spanish at the
international level. We have interactive
learning methodologies, as well as services
to practice Spanish on your phone and tablet
with the new Global AVE. We offer Spanish
courses for business, translation courses,
teacher training ... Do not forget, if you are
a foreigner and want to learn filipino, at the
Instituto Cervantes you can learn that too.

CONFERENCIA LECTURE
LO REAL Y LO MARAVILLOSO
EN LAS CRÓNICAS DE INDIAS
THE REAL AND THE WONDERFUL IN THE
CHRONICLES OF THE INDIES
deslumbrantes creaciones literarias americanas.
This lecture is about what the discovery of the New World meant for the Western World and
the difficulty historians had to go through to write about what they saw, as the new reality
in America was a challenge to a whole world of beliefs and attitudes. Given the inability to
describe and account for the characteristics of the New World, the historians repeatedly
resorted to wonder, as they had no assurance that the images that came before them
would necessarily respond to reality. Thus, Columbus’s ships brought to America not only
a new language and a new culture, but also the seed of a new literary expression. Writing
involved more than simply news reporting, writing was an act of creation that gave way to a
multitude of ways before the disconcerting plurality displayed in the New World. Hence the
great Latin American novelists of the 20th century (Carpentier, Fuentes, García Márquez)
recognize these historians as their predecessors and in their works they have found the
seeds of what has been called magical realism, one of the most dazzling literary creations in
American literature.
Paloma Jiménez del Campo is a professor of Latin American literature at the Universidad
de Complutense de Madrid. Her researches include a diverse genres and stages of Latin
American literature with special emphasis given to the colonial era, Cuban literature and the
Latin American short story.

HYPERPOTAMUS EN CONCIERTO
HYPERPOTAMUS IN CONCERT
Me mareo y me lleno
“When I sing as Hyperpotamus, I let the demons out, I sing my heart out. It becomes
something very physical: air is sucked in, only to be exhaled at a great force, making me feel
dizzy with glee!”
Hyperpotamus is a London-based multi-vocal solo artist from Madrid, Spain. He makes music
using only his voice, a few microphones and a loop pedal.
After 10 years of playing in bands as a drummer and pianist Hyperpotamus grew weary of the
whole scene, ditched the eternal cycle of dragging drums from one unsavoury dive to another,
and went solo, big time.
Now, during his tour around South East Asia, we will have the opportunity to have our
own “Hyperpotamus experience”. This is a must save-the-date for all the underground
contemporary music lovers.
Enjoy it!

BIBLIOTECA LIBRARY
MIGUEL HERNÁNDEZ
¡Ahora en Makati! Un mundo de información, entretenimiento y
cultura a tu alcance. ¡Si quieres ver películas, leer libros o escuchar
Now in Makati! A world of information, entertainment and culture at
your fingertips. If you want to borrow films, reading books or listening
biblioteca
Miguel
Hernández
está
abierta a toda la sociedad filipina. No es
necesario ser miembro de la biblioteca
para poder consultar nuestros materiales.
Lógicamente, animamos a que si os interesa
nuestra lengua y cultura os inscribáis para
conseguir nuestro carnet. Eso os dará la
posibilidad de llevaros en préstamo nuestra
literatura, material para el aprendizaje del
español, películas o discos de nuestros más
destacados músicos clásicos y modernos. No
No podía
biblioteca. A ello hay que añadir todos
aquellos materiales disponibles a un solo clic
12
If you still haven’t, we encourage you to
visit our Miguel Hernández Library. Our
library is open to all. It is not necessary
to be a member of the library to use our
materials. However, if you are interested
in our language and culture we suggest
signing up in our library to get a library
card. The card allows you to borrow our
books, material to learn Spanish, films or
music.
The Instituto Cervantes en Manila library,
in spite of its relative youth -it was created
in 1993-, has a long history. Indeed, an
important part of its funds comes from
the old Centro Cultural of the Spanish
Embassy in Manila, plus new materials
sent from Madrid to complete a collection
of more than 31.000 items: books, journals,
films, discs, etc. All of them have something
in common: they are focused on the Spanish
language and literature, both from Spain
and from Spanish speaking countries.
Of course, then, we could not leave out a
Filipiniana section where we try to gather
everything about the relationship between
the Philippines, Spain and Latin America.
On-site material is only one of the services
our library can offer. We must include
all the items available at a click: our
collection of audiobooks, electronic books
and journals. It is a priority of our library
system to enhance this collection as prime
movers of this type of materials in Spain.
Our Library has so many projects for
the future. We are preparing a research

Estamos preparando
un centro de investigadores en Intramuros
para responder las preguntas que nos llegan
sobre las relaciones fil-hispánicas. ¡Ahora es el
momento de sumarte a nuestra aventura!
