Cerca de 500 invitados se unieron a las festividades gobierno, los estudiantes, la facultad y los administadores. Desde entonces, esa colaboración se ha mantenida enfocada en la intención de desarrollar una institución de alto aprendizaje que provea la superación a través de la educación a todo el que pase por 40 años de Malcolm X College en la Comunidad. Nearly 500 guests joined in the festivities that featured recording artists, After 7 and Avant and the artistin-residence dance troupe, Najwa Dance Corps. “Malcolm X College was founded in this building 40 years ago through the collaborative efforts of the community, government, students, faculty and administrators. And since then, that collaboration has stayed focused on the single minded intention to develop an institution of higher learning that provides empowerment through education to anyone that passes through our doors,” said Malcolm X College President Ghingo Brooks. As a special surprise to the College, nationally recognized artist, Samuel Akainyah, presented a visual rendering to commemorate Malcolm X College’s 40 years in the community. Signed lithographs and posters of the commemorative painting are available for sale online at www.malcolmxcollege.edu. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the Malcolm X College Scholarship Fund, which provides students educational opportunities they otherwise would not be able to afford. The Pilsen Education Task Force, led by Pilsen Neighbors Community Council, a member of the Pilsen Planning Committee hosted its 3rd Annual Pilsen Education Summit. The free event invited parents and children to Benito Juarez High School to take advantage of various workshops intended to promote the importance of education to parents and students. The workshop addressed key topics such as, sex education, teen violence prevention, career placement services, health, tutoring information, family care and more. “What makes this event unique is or intent to create lasting relationships with parents that attend. Our message is that this event will not end when families walk out the door,” said Martha Monroy, principal at Cooper Dual Language Academy and chair of the Pilsen Education Summit. The goal of the education summit is to create a path of education for area residents from birth through college as well as make residents aware of the educational resources available in Pilsen.
