Fonética Inglesa (45310) English Phonetics 6 ECTS. Second Semester Lecturer: María Victoria Guadamillas Gómez Prerequisite: Intermediate English Objective The purpose of the course is to gain knowledge in theoretical and practical phonetics. It integrates profound theoretical insights with practical applications in a learning environment characterized by active student participation, both individually and in groups. Some of the specific objectives are: 1. Introduce phonetic and phonological English aspects 2. Introduce phonetics as an important part of second language acquisition 3. Analyze and compare the most important features of pronunciation in English. Contents The course consists of phonetics analysis, transcription and pronunciation The production of speech sounds The description and classification of speech sounds Prosody and prosodic features: stress, rhythm and intonation The transcription system Intonation and text/discourse After finishing the course the student will have basic knowledge about individual sounds, word stress, connected speech and intonation. Have knowledge of the importance of phonetics when teaching a second language. The student will also learn how to transcribe a written text. Teaching disposition Principal methods of instruction are lectures, discussions and practice. The design of the module allows students to attend lectures, and take part in small discussion groups. With the use of teaching cases, students will have opportunities to participate in decision making and develop skills in structuring the necessary information. Examination A written term paper and two practices are required. Attendance in lectures and case presentations are also mandatory to pass the course. Individual assignments will amount to no less than 50 percent of the total course credits. Students who do not pass the written examination will be offered a re-examination opportunity in July.
