SAN SEBASTIÁN POWDER HOUSE
l Polvorín de San Sebastián se construyó en 1791 en la esquina noreste de la ciudad, en
la Calle Norzagaray. Este polvorín tenía la capacidad de guardar 184,000 kilos de pólvora
y suplía al Fuerte de San Cristóbal y a los bastiones aledaños. En 1880, el polvorín fue
clausurado debido a las protestas sobre el peligro que representaba a los vecinos. Entre 1900 y
1923, el Departamento de Educación usó el antiguo polvorín como almacén de materiales
escolares. En noviembre 1923, como parte de las obras de construcción de la Escuela Abraham
Lincoln, se demolió el polvorín. Actualmente sólo sobrevive el cuerpo de guardia.
he San Sebastian Powder House was built in 1791 on the northeastern corner of the
city, on Norzagaray Street. This powder house had the capacity to store 184,000 kilos of
gunpowder and it supplied the San Cristobal Fort and the adjacent bastions. In 1880, the
powder house was closed in response to protests regarding the dangers it represented to the
neighbors. Between 1900 and 1923, the Department of Education used the old powder house to
store school supplies. In November 1923, as part of the construction project for the Abraham
Lincoln School, the powder house was demolished. Currently, only the guard house still stands.
