All these scientific and cultural activities has been performed with such enthusiasm about knowing that a lot of persons can have access to scientific talks and, why not, get interested on Physics or Optics sciences for living. We steal having a great time in our Student Chapter, full of activities both academic and social. This has created a very enthusiastic atmosphere among the Chapter members. At these times we are 25 members but we hope to increase the number of members at the present year. 3. ACTIVITIES Chapters Activities: Workshops and Scientific informal talks. Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) 3rd Cinvesniñ@s: “Porque el conocimiento también se siente” November 27 -28, 2009, Attendants: 700 During the 3rd Cinvesniñ@s, our SPIE Student Chapter participated at National Polytechnic Institute with a Workshop: Kaleidoscope, Periscope and astronomical kit. In fact, the national week of sciences and technology is celebrated in Mexico every year. In this two days every institute of science of technology they should participate with activities to promote the science in our country. Our chapter was invited to participate with workshop optics in order to show the importance of science and optics in our lives. Thus, during two days two of us were sharing and enjoying the science and technology with children, teenagers and old people. 6 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Juan Carlos Juarez and Benito Canales preparing the workshop: periscopes and kaleidoscope. Centro Educativo Mexicano Workshop experiments optics. December 04, 2009. Attendants: 150 The experiments were related to: index of refraction, electromagnetic fields, waves, lasers, holograms, diffraction, polarization, dispersion and interference. Showing Optics experiments. 7 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP) Segunda Feria de Ciencias December 10, 2009. Attendants: 270 We presented a talk about general optics and Optics experiments. Daniel Lopez is talking about the principles of fiber Optics and lasers. And Juan Carlos Juarez is talking to the children about lenses and image formation. 4th International Reading Fair (FILEC) 3D Images workshop and Optics experiments. February 11 - 14, 2010. Attendants: 3500 Part of our work as a Student Chapter consists of developing techniques to explain and understand the optics science in order to motivate to others. One way to do this is by building little and easy to understand instruments with low cost materials, such as telescopes, microscopes or periscopes. We are sure that this represents an attractive way to teach and understand the optics. This event was very important in the state of Puebla. These way almost 20,000 children of different schools were invited to participate in these activities. Although there were almost 130 different activities and workshops, it was necessary to participate with 3D images workshop and Optics experiments. The experiments were related to: index of refraction, electromagnetic fields, waves, lasers, holograms, diffraction, polarization, dispersion and interference. The main idea of these experiments was to promote our activities as optics students, as well as SPIE Student Chapter. Children of different schools were able to listen our explanations and enjoy with the experiments. The success of both workshops was evident with the building of approximately 1000 lens for 3D images workshop. This was possible not only with the participation of each member of our Student Chapter, but also with the collaboration of invited friends and parents who were working together for four days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. What a experience!. This is an example of how we can improve the teaching and learning of optics science for children. In fact, with this kind of workshops we have motivated to others, including old people, so that they can research a little bit more about the applications of optics. We would like to increase the number of workshops with the brilliant ideas of our members. 8 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Showing 3D images workshop and Optics experiments. Members of the INAOE Student Chapter who participated in this event. 9 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Centro escolar “José María Morelos y Pavón”. Semana de la ciencia y sus aplicaciones February 15 – 19, 2010. Attendants: 1200 By First Time the INAOE Student Chapter of SPIE was the organizer, and the School Center “José Maria Morelos y Pavon (CEM)” gave us that opportunity. It was a great experience for all members involved. The name of this event was “Week of Science and application” and the INAOE Student Chapter of SPIE was the contact for the speakers and the CEM. In this event we created the workshop of dark camera for teenager and we attend around 1200 persons between kids and teenager. The Speakers were researchers from INAOE and the University of Puebla, Mexico. Javier is talking about dark camera. 10 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Showing Optics experiments. 11 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Institute Francisco Esqueda March 24 – 26, 2010. Attendants: 200 Judge in the “XII Jornada de Ciencias”. Esteban Rueda and Benito Canales are evaluating projects. 12 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Institute Francisco Esqueda 3D Images workshop March 25, 2010. Attendants: 240 Workshop where children and teenager made their own Images 3D. Kids and teenagers are participated in this workshop. 13 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Bachillerato general Cadete Vicente Suárez First Week of Science April 19 -21, 2010. Attendants: 700 The INAOE Student Chapter of SPIE was the organizer, and the school zone 014 “Cadete Vicente Suarez”. In this event we realized Optics experiments were related to: index of refraction, electromagnetic fields, waves, lasers, holograms, diffraction, polarization, dispersion and interference. Workshop: Kaleidoscope, Periscope, 3D Images and astronomical kit. We attend around 700 between 15 to 18 years old. 14 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Colegio Mexicano de Tehuacan “3rd Week of Science and Technology” May 11, 2010. Attendants: 300 One of the main activities of the student chapter is to go to other cities to divulge the optics; we believe it is very important because not all schools have the chance to visit the laboratories of INAOE. In the city Tehuacan, Puebla. The “College Mexicano” invited us to participate in their third week of science and technology. On this occasion, participated in two conferences, the first was “Optics in everyday life” and the second was “Optical and applications”. Also there were tables of experiments as it is, holography, diffraction, polarization, imaging, wave guides, and experiment Newton BBQ to interact and increase number of member of the Chapter. 15 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica The internal conferences for external visitors there are listed in this table. 16 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica Participation in Congresses. Optics + Photonics Meeting in San Diego. July 31 – August 6, 2009. 4. DETAILS OF PLANNED ACTIVITIES FOR THE FUTURE. 1. Increase the numbers of workshops. We already have the kaleidoscope, periscope, photography, 3D Images and camera obscure workshops. 2. Give informal talks about optics and also tours to the optics labs for students from kindergarden to undergraduate. 17 SPIE Chapter Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica 3.
