PAST PROGRESSIVE TENSES
• Read the following sentences. In what tense are the boldfaced verbs?
¿Qué estás haciendo?
(What are you doing?)
Estoy haciendo la tarea.
(I am doing homework.)

EXPLANATION: The boldfaced verbs are in the present progressive tense and
emphasize that a present action is in progress. They are formed with the present tense
of estar and the present participle of the main verb.
• Read these sentences, paying attention to the boldfaced verbs and their meanings.
¿Qué estabas leyendo?
(What were you reading?)
Estaba leyendo un libro de poemas.
(I was reading a poetry book.)
EXPLANATION: The boldfaced verbs are in the past progressive tense. They say that
an action was in progress. The past progressive is formed with the imperfect of estar
and the present participle of the main verbs.
Estaba leyendo cuando me viste en el parque.
(I was reading when you saw me in the park.)
EXPLANATION: The first verb is in the past progressive and the second one is in the
preterite. The sentence expresses an action in progress that was interrupted.
• Read these sentences, paying attention to the boldfaced verb.
Estuvimos estudiando toda la tarde.
(We were studying all afternoon.)
EXPLANATION: To say that an action continued for a period of time and then came to
an end, use the preterite of estar plus the present participle of the main verb.
• Read this sentence, paying attention to the boldfaced verbs.
Cuando te fuiste a la fiesta, yo seguí viendo la televisión.
(When you left for the party, I continued watching TV.)
EXPLANATION: Use a preterite form of the verbs continuar, seguir, or quedarse
with the present participle to emphasize the continuation or start of an ongoing
action.

Read and study the following examples.
Comenzó a llover cuando salíamos para la playa.
(It started to rain when we were leaving for the beach.)
Estábamos viendo una película y de pronto sonó el teléfono.
(We were watching a movie and all of a sudden the phone rang.)
Remember that the imperfect is used to tell what was going on in the background.
The preterite is used to describe the interrupting action or main event.
