Maria Antonia Escobar 7.1 Poem There was a Young lade whose chin Resembled the point of a pin: So she had it made sharp And purchased a harp, And played several tunes with her chin. Analysis I chose poem #1 to analyze. “There was a young lady whose chin,” by Edward Lear. The poem is organized into one stanza and it has a total of 5 lines which makes it a cinquain. This is a limerick poem, a short funny poem of 5 lines. The rhyme of the poem consists on the 1st,2nd and 5th that should rhyme for example in this poem “chin”, “pin” and “chin” rhyme, and the 3rd and 4th line should also rhyme so in this poem the author used “sharp” and “harp”. Two literary elements in this poem are, metaphor because when the author says “Resembled the point of a pin” and that is a metaphor because the author didn’t use the words “like” or “as”. The other literary element is imagery when the author says “So she made it sharp” because I imagine the lady getting her chin sharp. I think the author’s message is that a girl who had a big chin found the solution to it. I like this poem because it is really funny and easy to understand.
