It’s a freezing cold winter morning; I make my way through the crowd at
a bustling train station and sit by a window. I look through the glass, I see
there’s no English rain today to welcome me and though most people seem to
be in a rush, reading the Metro or lost in their own thoughts, I couldn’t really
be more overwhelmed by the whole experience. The very next day I find myself
wandering along the Thames, walking up and down Oxford Street. Days later I
would be taking a stroll down Penny Lane, standing in John Lennon’s childhood
bedroom and minutes later in the living room which gave birth to the earliest
compositions of the greatest British band of all time, the Beatles. It does seem
surreal now that I think about it and, coming from one of those who think that
things such as winning the national lottery or a Mother’s day hamper will never
happen to them, it’s definitely more than I could ever have hoped for. It’s hard
to believe that not so long ago I was walking through the streets I had
only dreamt about walking and that I visited places I had always had
a longing to visit.

I’d like to thank the BRITÁNICO, not only for giving me the opportunity
to visit such wonderful places and meet some amazing people like the
polite and funny Londoners, the friendly and witty Scousers as well
as people from all around the globe, but also for giving me a chance
to study in one of the most prestigious language schools in London,
International House, which, together with the opportunity to experience
the London life, helped me to take my English fluency to a much higher
level. I am even more grateful to the BRITÁNICO because this trip was
indeed a turning point for me; this whole experience made me realize
what I really want in life and I hope that, if this is what the future has
in store for me, I will go back there to continue my studies. Thank you,
BRITÁNICO, for helping me from the start, for helping not only me but
many others through the whole process. Thank you for filling me with fond memories that
will remain with me forever as some of the dearest I have.

De lejos, el mejor premio

Esther Paredes, Ganadora de la Beca a la Excelencia 2009-III
Siempre pensé que lo más emocionante del viaje iba a ser conocer una nueva
cultura, pero descubrí más de una. También esperaba conocer los lugares y a las
personas de las fotos de mi libro de inglés, y lo logré. Fue divertido caminar por las
calles y escuchar gente hablando en diferentes idiomas sin ser turista o ver puestos
de comida de todos los países, incluso en un mercado encontré un puestito peruano.
A pesar de los comentarios sobre la comida inglesa, a mí me pareció rica, aunque tal
vez era solo la sazón de mis landlords.
Desde que llegué no se me agotaron nunca las ganas ni las ansias de salir y conocer
Londres. Era encantador poder visitar lugares diferentes todos los días en una sola
ciudad. Entre los lugares que mejor recuerdo están: el London Eye, a más de 100

metros sobre el río Támesis; la experiencia de estar en Abbey Road y en The Beatles
Store, un paraíso para fanáticos; el museo del Hard Rock Cafe;
los mercados de pulgas de la ciudad; el parque de
alucinantes montañas rusas Thorpe Park (el día de mayor
adrenalina de toda mi vida); todos los parques gigantescos
que había en medio de la ciudad; el castillo de Windsor;
Brighton y el mejor fish & chips (sin vinagre) que he comido junto al mar; definitivamente el Tube
(no les gusta decir subway) y los buses rojos de dos pisos; creo que son los que más voy a extrañar,
y miles más.
Agradezco mucho al BRITÁNICO que, además del viaje a Londres, en el premio incluye la oportunidad
de estudiar en International House con gente de todo el mundo, hacer amigos, conocer más sobre su
país, etc. Por todo lo que te he contado, mi único consejo es que, si vas a dar uno de los exámenes de
Cambridge, estudia mucho porque el premio de hacerlo lo vale todo. ¡Gracias BRITÁNICO!, este fue,
de lejos, el mejor regalo que me han dado.

En el mes de abril, trece alumnos ganaron la Beca a la Excelencia. En esta oportunidad, doce de ellos nos brindan su testimonio:

I remember the first
time I came to the
BRITÁNICO; I was
kind of nervous
because I knew
it was going to
be a whole new
experience for me – and so it was. Not
only going to learn English every day
but also having the opportunity to
meet a lot of people made it one of the
greatest experiences of my life. When I
decided to take the FCE, it never crossed
my mind that I was going to be one of
the winners of the Scholarship. Passing
the FCE with an A was my main goal.
When I was standing there at the stage
between those who could possibly win
the Scholarship, a tantalizing image of
London came to my mind. As soon as I
heard that the thirteen of us had won
the Excellence Scholarship, my heart
was suddenly full with joy. Thanks,
BRITÁNICO, I’m going to make the most
of this life-changing experience.

el

sido una de las
experiencias

gratificantes
que
me
ha
tocado
vivir, no solo por
haber logrado la tan ansiada Beca
a la Excelencia sino por lo que ha
significado el adquirir el dominio de un
segundo idioma, el cual te da muchas
oportunidades y a la vez te permite
vivir un sinnúmero de experiencias.
Primeramente, quiero agradecer a mi
familia por ese constante apoyo que
me ha dado día tras día; recuerdo que
fueron ellos los que literalmente me
obligaron a iniciarme en el aprendizaje
del idioma, cuando aún era un
adolescente, llevándome prácticamente
a la fuerza al BRITÁNICO de Lima. Sin
embargo, fue luego de la universidad
cuando por convicción propia decidí
perfeccionarlo y me di cuenta de que
los certificados de Cambridge eran

When I think of
the night I won
the
Excellence
Scholarship,
I
remember being
nervous,
excited
and happy at the
same time. As soon as I heard that
every nominated candidate would win,
I almost cried for joy, I just couldn’t
believe it. My parents were as surprised
as I was, or maybe even more.
The BRITÁNICO has been one of the
most wonderful experiences I’ve ever
had in my life. I was there for almost
five years and enjoyed every minute of
it, every class. And of course I never
got bored on the breaks, because of
my friends Alessandra and Priscila,
who I would like to thank for all their
unconditional support and friendship.
I would also like to thank my parents,
for making the decision to put me in
BRITÁNICO, a decision I will always be
thankful for.
Studying at the BRITÁNICO has been an
enriching experience. I will be eternally
grateful to the BRITÁNICO for giving us
this chance to go to England.

Dreams come true
íbamos al Reino Unido fue demasiado

En aquel momento,
estando de pie
junto a los otros
candidatos,
que
estaba a punto
de anunciarse al
ganador de la beca,
me sentía completamente nervioso
y pensé que tal vez no la obtendría;
pero cuando dijeron que todos los
presentes en el estrado habíamos sido
premiados, pasé del nerviosismo a una
mezcla de alivio y felicidad. Ahora, con
esta beca que me ha sido concedida
no sólo podré conocer nuevos lugares
y a nuevas personas, también adquiriré
experiencias que me serán de inmensa
utilidad en el futuro. Realmente ha
valido la pena todo el esfuerzo.
Quiero agradecer a la Asociación
Cultural Peruano Británica por esta gran
oportunidad; a todos mis profesores,
quienes fueron muy pacientes conmigo
e hicieron que aprender inglés fuese
una experiencia divertida y única que
siempre recordaré; y, por supuesto, a
mis padres por todo su apoyo y por ser
tan insistentes en que estudie inglés en
el BRITÁNICO.

En el momento en
que me llamaron
como candidata a la
Beca a la Excelencia
en la Ceremonia
de
Entrega
de
Certificados ESOL,
me sentí muy emocionada; pero cuando
dijeron que todos los candidatos
habíamos ganado esta importante
beca, no podía ocultar mi alegría.
Lo primero que recordé fue que, cuando
era pequeña, no me gustaban mucho
las clases de inglés porque pensaba
que no sería capaz de dominar otro
idioma. Sin embargo, poco a poco
fui interesándome más por conocerlo
y hace tres años, cuando ingresé al
BRITÁNICO, progresé rápidamente en
mi desempeño en este idioma. Fue
allí que encontré que el inglés es todo
un mundo por descubrir y te abre las
puertas a diversos conocimientos y
experiencias.
Quisiera agradecerles a los excelentes
profesores que me guiaron durante este
proceso, a mi familia (sobre todo a mis
padres por interesarse en mi aprendizaje
de esta lengua tan fascinante) y a todas
las demás personas maravillosas que
creyeron siempre en mí, hasta en los
momentos más difíciles.
Quisiera, finalmente, agradecer al
BRITÁNICO por la gran oportunidad de
viajar y estudiar en Londres, y recordarles
a los estudiantes que, con dedicación
y entusiasmo, todos podemos lograr
mucho más de lo que nosotros mismos

If I had to thank
someone for my
first step at the
beginning of the
right
path,
I’d
gladly tell you all,
“Hey! It was all my
mum’s idea”, and of course the fact
that I had an English version of a Harry
Potter book that I wasn’t able to fully
understand. For it had so many new
words and expressions that attempting
to read just the first chapter became
a painful experience. I didn’t like that
nagging feeling of not being able to
read a book, of feeling hopeless. When
my mum asked me if I was interested
in taking up extra English classes, I
couldn’t have been happier and quickly
said yes.
The halls of the BRITÁNICO Institute
were a whole new world for me, and it
was exciting. I met new people. I made
great friends. But most important of
all, I had so much fun learning a new
language that one hour and a half
wasn’t enough for me. With the help
and good advice of all my teachers,
everything seemed so easy that it looked
like magic - indeed, it was magic. And
here I’m going to sound a tad clichéd:
I fell in love with the BRITÁNICO, its
cafeteria and the lovely red telephone
box. Never did I imagine that the end
of that fantastic road would be the very
start of another.
The six months in Advanced were simply
the best. Yes, we did have to work hard
every cycle and even though there
were some tough, times we did our
best and helped each other. I am still
grateful for the comradeship that grew
between all of us and for the more than
welcomed friendship, advice and words
of encouragement from a certain Jedi
Master disguised as our wise teacher
Eduardo Jordan. Sir, I did it! It’s like tons
of Skittles are falling from the sky!
I’m still feeling a little bit numb and
overwhelmed – in a good way - about
the whole idea of travelling to one of
the most important places in the world:
London! The day of the ESOL ceremony
was a new whole experience. My legs
were shaking so hard that it was almost
embarrassing. Bits and pieces are still
engraved in my mind. Unbelievable.
I want to thank all my teachers, the
staff and all the people who made this
dream possible. Thank you so much,
dear BRITÁNICO. You will be forever in
my heart.

the U.K.

Three years ago I
walked into my first
English lesson with
a lot of excitement
but also a little bit
of fear, hoping it
wouldn’t be as hard
as I had been told it was. Fortunately,
after ten minutes of class I realised I
could understand everything our teacher
was saying, which made the anxiety go
away and, more importantly, made me
realize I could do really well if I wanted
to. It has been a long time since that first
day, however, I still feel slightly scared
when I’m about to do something new,
like today. Thanks to the BRITÁNICO
I’ve learnt a lot, and now, thanks to
the BRITÁNICO I’m heading off to
England to learn even more. I know that
what I’m about to experience will be
incomparable and just the thought of
it is rather overwhelming; nevertheless
I can’t wait to get on that airplane and
see what’s out there waiting for me.

I strongly believe that one should not
seek a prize, but should be grateful when
blessed with one. I know I am.
I have studied at the BRITÁNICO for a
long time and I have great memories
from this great Institute. However,
sometimes I wondered if getting up early in the mornings
was worthwhile when I could have slept more or been with
my friends. But it was!
Winning this scholarship means a lot to me. I certainly did
not expect it. Even though I think I could have done better,
I was granted this incredible opportunity and I plan to make
the best of it.
To conclude, I would like to encourage all of you to do the
best you can just for the feeling of accomplishment and
maybe you will be rewarded. In my case, I look forward to

Me siento súper feliz y honrada de recibir
este premio. No muchas veces en la vida
se te presentan oportunidades así, y
cuando lo hacen, y todo parece indicar
que es correcto y que tu esfuerzo valió la
pena, es la sensación más reconfortante
que existe. Esta beca representa para
mí el hecho de destacar, siempre había
querido destacar, pero me quedaba en el fondo y me mezclaba
con la multitud. Toda mi vida ha sido así, pero, al recibir este

I started studying English two years ago.
At that time, I would never have thought
that I could have the chance to take the
FCE exam. I only wanted to improve my
skills and I kept doing my best month
after month. I found out that English is a
really easy and enjoyable language when
you study at the BRITÁNICO.
When I was about to finish Advanced course, my parents
asked me whether I was ready to take the FCE exam. I agreed
to take it and so I did.
I will always remember the day the results were available to
be seen. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw an A!
At the ceremony I was called as a finalist for the Excellence
Scholarship. 13 nervous youngsters were standing there
waiting for the result. And the result was… we all won the
scholarship!
Now I’m really looking forward to my trip to London, it’s a
dream come true and I will always thank the BRITÁNICO for
it.

Avanzada.
Los objetivos del concurso eran que nuestros alumnos practiquen su inglés y comprueben qué tan familiarizados estaban con los
componentes de la serie Complete First Certificate y con las partes del examen FCE de Cambridge ESOL.
El día 11 de mayo se realizó la entrega de premios a los ganadores en
presencia del notario de Lima César Augusto Carpio Valdez, así como de
representantes del BRITÁNICO y de Cambridge University Press.

premio, siento que he dejado huella en el mundo. Siento
que valgo mucho más de lo que pensaba y que ahora tengo
muchas más oportunidades para el futuro. Últimamente he
estado muy preocupada sobre qué haré mañana más tarde,
porque no lo tenía claro y, aunque aún no lo tengo muy claro,
la beca me permitió expandir mis posibilidades y enfocarme
en las carreras que realmente me gustan y que involucran
inglés. Mi currículum ahora tiene un plus significativo; sin
embargo, sé que lo que estoy a punto de vivir, los lugares que
visitaré y a las personas que conoceré serán lo más lindo de
toda la experiencia.

ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES
Tiempo libre
•
Elvira Guzmán, Encargada de Actividades Extracurriculares
Como si se tratara del baúl de los tesoros, la artesanía nos
permite ir descubriendo un sinfín de manualidades que
podemos poner en práctica ante el asombro de nuestros
alumnos siempre ávidos por aprender y expresar su destreza
en este campo.
Contando con la asesoría de nuestros profesores, los talleres
ofrecidos fueron prácticos y de fácil aprendizaje, los que
sirven de referencia a nuestros alumnos para crear sus propios
diseños o variantes. Con estas pautas, visitamos los centros de
Surco, San Miguel y San Juan de Lurigancho, donde tuvimos
sesiones de pintura en trupán, y los participantes tuvieron la
oportunidad de volcar su creatividad pintando y decorando
cuadros con fondo marino y portaCD, con bellos resultados.
En Pueblo Libre, se brindó un taller de bisutería y los asistentes
tuvieron la habilidad de confeccionar un fino juego de pulsera
y aretes. Finalmente, en el centro de enseñanza de Lima, los
alumnos estuvieron de plácemes, pues intervinieron en la
preparación del provocativo postre tiramisú, y todos elogiaron
la clase.
Las técnicas, colores y sabores de cada uno de los talleres
quedarán grabados en la memoria de los participantes y a su
vez les permitirán apreciar la artesanía.

A heart for Mum...
Say it with pictures...
Mothers are the sweetest gift from God to us. There is no
way we can ever really thank our mother for all she does for
us. Mother’s Day is the best time to say in words and express
with actions how much you love and care for your mum.
Students often think that the ability to speak a language is the
product of language learning, but speaking is also a decisive
part of the language learning process. As teachers, we want
to provide them with the most effective speaking strategies
as well as class activities that can help them expand their
knowledge of the language and their confidence in using it.
As part of these activities, there is one I have been using with
students of different cycles and the results have been more
than satisfactory. They were given a topic to talk about, e.g.
their favourite star, and based on it, they made a poster with
only pictures. This way, students could remember vocabulary,
check grammar, link and organise their ideas while the rest of
the class could understand more easily what was being said. I
have proved not only the effectiveness of this activity but also
seen how committed and interested students are in learning
the English language. Thanks to all of you, B02, B03, B04 and
F01 students, for your valuable cooperation and participation
to make this activity successful not only for me, but above all,
for you!!!

Thinking of this, when my Pre-Kids students were asked if
they would like to make a craft for their mum, the answer
was a unanimous “YES!!” All their tender love was poured
out in the hearts they drew, cut out, coloured, decorated
and filled with short but significant phrases about what their
mums mean to them. There’s definitely nothing better than a
child’s love for their mum. Thanks, Pre-Kids 2 and 7!!

Earth day and Easter

Last month, Kids 4 students enthusiastically prepared
posters about Earth Day and Easter.
Earth Day, which is commemorated on April 22 , is a day
that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for
the Earth’s natural environment. And Easter, which this
year fell on April 24th, is the central feast in the Christian
liturgical year since it celebrates Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

Students’ reaction to information about pollution and how
to deal with environmental issues really surprised me. They
were so engaged with the topic that when they finished
their work, they threw spare paper in the special boxes
to collect paper and even asked me what they can do to
recycle plastic bottles!

AQUALAND!

Our Kids 10 students were very enthusiastic and energetic
when performing a choreography of the Aqualand song in
Pop Up Now 4. Not only did they sing but they also danced
and enjoyed themselves. And so did I!

Los negocios hoy en día demandan la interacción con personas de todas las partes del mundo, sobre
todo si perteneces a una empresa con presencia global. Tenemos trabajando con el BRITÁNICO
más de tres años, tiempo durante el cual muchos alumnos de nuestra empresa, incluyéndome,
han concluido con satisfacción el curso de EFP. La calidad y metodología es lo que ha contribuido
a que la mayoría de nuestra fuerza laboral lleve los cursos de inglés. Particularmente considero
que el servicio de backoffice es excelente. Recibo respuestas en tiempos prudenciales y útiles para
la toma de decisiones. Hay constante preocupación por el desarrollo de los alumnos, esto aunado
a un seguimiento adecuado. Estamos contentos con el servicio recibido.
La atención de Coordinación también fue personalizada, permitiendo la accesibilidad a los
servicios de una manera impecable.
La atención administrativa estuvo en concordancia, intachable.
Obviamente la utilidad es invaluable, ya que me permite acceder a tecnología de vanguardia para
en un futuro poder transferir esos conocimientos a nuevas personas.
Con mucho gusto accedo a escribir estas líneas agradeciendo a todas las personas que me
trataron con mucho cariño, paciencia y estimación. A la vez, los felicito por promover el desarrollo
y la estimulación de los estudiantes deseando que continúen en la misma línea de dedicación.
Reciclando en Lima

Durante el mes de abril, los alumnos del centro de Lima participaron activamente en la campaña de reciclaje que pusimos en
marcha. Profesores, alumnos y personal del centro no dudaron en traer revistas, libros, papeles, guías telefónicas, etc., y todo para
ayudar a tener un medio ambiente limpio y mejor. Queremos agradecer a todos por su entusiasmo y apoyo, pues como centro
logramos recaudar 705 Kg, y en especial a los alumnos del profesor Jesús Palomino (B04 4:10 p. m.) quienes recaudaron 258,5 Kg
y motivaron a sus compañeros a ser parte de este gran reto. ¡Gracias a todos ellos por su compromiso y colaboración!

También los textos de lectura (libros) me facilitaron el entendimiento de una manera tan gradual
y progresiva que me ayudaron a pensar en el idioma de una manera entretenida y didáctica, y a
la vez simplificaron la manera de conversar para que sea fluida y coherente.

Estuve en módulos de conversación en el BRITÁNICO (One to one), que básicamente consisten en
clases de conversación de cuatro horas diarias personalizadas. Estas me facilitaron inicialmente la
comprensión de conceptos básicos, no como un acto mecánico ni de decodificación sino como
uno de comprensión. La profesora Faride Galvez me permitió desarrollar lo aprendido mediante
metodología sencilla que me capacitó para leer, escribir y conversar, combinando la estructura
gramatical para interpretar de manera lógica y ordenada integrando lo aprendido mediante
asociación de ideas.
La Zona Maldita
¡Hola, hijitos! Siempre tenemos en la Zona un top 3 de
alguna babosada, pero esta vez vamos a reventarnos cuetes a
nosotros mismos, ya que este 13 de mayo cumplimos 9 años
ininterrumpidos de Mañana maldita on air.
Se completó la trinidad y desde ese día no han parado de
inventar cada estupidez, como por ejemplo: “rata zamba” y
“larva gringa”, “Tony Ñaja”, “Bruce We Lee”, “Lalo y El seco”,
“las radios malditas”, “las malditas basuras” y por supuesto,
el favorito del BRITÁNICO, “Malditamerican Pydol”, que muy
pronto saldrá en vivo desde el BRITÁNICO de Surco.
Todo empezó un 13 de mayo del 2002, cuando Juan Francisco
Escobar llegó a Planeta con la misión de hacer un morning show
y, para lograrlo, el jefe de Planeta en esa época, le recomendó
a un tal Tomy para que sea su partner; pero Juanfra quería a
toda costa al chibolo nuevo que estaba en la noche, un tal
Daniel Marquina, y lo logró.
Ya sabes, no te pierdas la Mañana maldita de lunes a viernes
de 6 a 9 a. m. con Gonzalo “Lechuza Gorda” Torres y Daniel
“Mono Flaco” Marquina.
See You.
El programa comenzó espectacular, miles de auspiciadores y
millones de personas escuchándonos desde su casa, auto, etc.
¡Mentira!, nos escuchaba nuestra vieja y no nos auspiciaba ni
Elévate Shoes, pero sabíamos que poco a poco mejoraríamos,
siempre y cuando la radio quisiera esperarnos. Tiempo
después, apareció el Chino Jeffrey para ordenar el programa
y la cosa mejoró.
Un 6 de mayo del 2005, cuando Juan Francisco ya nos había
comunicado que se iría a Colombia a conducir el extraordinario
programa (que nadie recuerda) Gran hermano del Pacífico,
llegó al programa Gonzalo Torres. El Chino, fiel, se arrancó con
Juanfra, y la nueva dupla Gonchi y Daniel empezó a buscar
nuevo coordinador. Llegaron algunos sin pena ni gloria como
Mangoni, Calamaro, Homero, etc., hasta que por fin llegó
quien hoy es el productor del morning: Augusto “Papopa”
Robles.
