The BOOK IT! Program has begun! From October 1, 2013,
to March 31, 2014, students are to read at least 20 minutes
every day! A parent/guardian must fill out the NEW reading
log provided and the student must write the number of
minutes read on the stopwatch as well as color the stopwatch
if they read 20 minutes or more! At the end of each month,
if a student has reached the goal of 620 minutes (20 minutes
a day for the 31 days in October) and they have all been verified (signed) by an adult, the student
will earn a “Reading Award Certificate” that can be redeemed at Pizza Hut for their very own
free, one-topping personal pan pizza! On their first visit, they will receive an official “BOOK IT!
Passport to Reading to track their reading progress throughout the program months. Each time
they meet our monthly reading goal of at least 20 minutes every night, they will earn another
personal pan pizza and a sticker to add to their passport!
Remember, the minutes read outside of school are what make the difference!
So let’s “read our hearts out” and celebrate reading achievement together!

*Spelling Bee Announcement: Every week we focus on a new grade level.
This week will be the 6th grade words! Next week will be the 7th grade words. The following week we will focus
on the 8th grade words and then we will start all over again with the kindergarten words!!!
We will have a class spelling bee every Friday! STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! Picture Day is Thursday, October 3, 2013! Students must wear their SCHOOL UNIFORM!
This Friday we will celebrate “Bring
Instrument to School Day!”

**We will continue taking timed math drills daily in class! Please remind your student to do their best. They are
1 minute drills. Students are only allowed to start when I say “GO!” and they must remember that these basic
addition and subtraction facts should be committed to memory. When I say “Pencils down!” it means the minute
is over and your student must put their pencil down. If they finish before the minute is over, they should check
their work; they may find a mistake! Students that EARN 100% will be able to move on to the next timed test.
There are 12 basic addition and subtraction facts tests.

*Congratulations to the 5 students that were able to go time-out free all last month! We are so proud of their
ability to make positive behavior choices!
*Mayor Eric Garcetti’s visit was exciting and we were able to give him our class book full of our ideas about what
makes Los Angeles a great city in which to live and what we think a mayor’s job description entails! He enjoyed
reading it!
*Our NFL Play 60 Challenge Kick-off Week went well! Ask your student about it!
*”Wear Your Favorite Sunglasses to School Day” was held on a day when we were outside listening to various
speeches so we were a little more comfortable!
*Our First Parent Meeting (Literacy Workshop) was a lot of fun! Enjoy the pictures of various families enjoying
reading together and learning comprehension strategies to use at home together to make reading more fun!
*Receiving the books my mother gave us made us “jump for joy!”
*What wonderful “Helping Our Community” posters/reports!
*Our plants continue to grow (well most of them, anyway!) Remember to bring them every Monday morning!

Remember, classes that have the top attendance records will be rewarded with a popcorn party! We would like to have the
top attendance record in the whole school EVERY month!

El BOOK IT! El programa ha comenzado! Desde el 1 de octubre de 2013,
31 de marzo de 2014, los estudiantes deben leer por lo menos 20 minutos
todos los días! El padre / tutor debe llenar la nueva lectura

Este viernes vamos a celebrar " Traiga su instrumento musical favorito a la Escuela ! " Puede ser un instrumento que ha hecho o
comprado !
** Vamos a seguir teniendo programado matemáticas ejercicios todos los días en clase! Por favor recuerde a su hijo a hacer lo mejor .
Son ejercicios de 1 minuto . Los estudiantes sólo se les permite empezar cuando digo " GO! " Y deben recordar que estas operaciones
básicas de suma y resta se deben comprometer a la memoria. Cuando digo " Lápices abajo! " Significa que el minuto se ha acabado y el
estudiante debe poner sus lápices de abajo . Si terminan antes de la hora es más , deberían revisar su trabajo , ya que pueden encontrar un
error! Los estudiantes que ganan 100 % podrán pasar a la siguiente prueba cronometrada. Hay 12 suma y restas pruebas.
