What is a
Quince Años Celebration?
A tradition that is gaining popularity among many
Mexican American communities is that when a
young lady reaches the age of 15 years, she has a
celebration called quince años, which means 15
years. This celebration probably dates back to a
custom of the Mayas and the Toltecas. It was
considered that the muchacho was not a person
until he reaches the age of 15. It was at this time
that he was presented to the tribe community.
It was then that he became a warrior. At this
time he was given his escudo and espada.
Now, he legally belonged to the community. The
young lady was also presented to the community
because she was looked upon as vital force of
the tribe, because of her power of motherhood
she gave warriors to the community. For the
young lady, the ceremony included the
commitment and responsibility she had to the
community. The community in turn accepted
her as a committed and responsible member.
This custom also dates back to the Jewish
custom of presenting the young lady in the
temple. The ceremony symbolized the
responsibility of the young lady at this time of
her life to the human group of which she is a
member. The way this custom is popularly
understood today by the presentation of the
young lady to society. In order to bring out the
religious and spiritual dimensions, Catholics
celebrate this custom with special emphasis on
the awareness and sensitivity of the young lady
in dealing with her virtues, values, concerns,
and challenges of the Christian community.
The quince años celebration is not a sacrament
but the sacrament of Penance and Eucharist
may very well be integral parts of the celebration.
The event may be celebrated in the simplest form
possible to avoid creating class distinction in how
it is celebrated.
The requirements at
St. Bartholomew’s are:











FIFTEENTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
It is a tradition that Mexican-American communities
celebrate on their daughters’ fifteenth birthday.

The family must be registered parishioners.
The candidate and her family must be
attending Mass regularly. (Envelope usage
will determine regular attendance of
weekend Mass)
The candidate must be enrolled in our
Religious Education Program (CCE) and
have completed two years prior to her
fifteenth year (13, 14 and 15 years of age).
After the young lady will need to continue
your CCE classes for the Sacrament of
Confirmation.
The candidate must attend all six classes
which are held twice a year either in
February or September @ 7:00 pm and both
parents must attend the first and last class.
To register for these classes you must
come by the parish office and pay a
registration fee of $40 before classes
begin. You must arrive 15 minutes early;
doors will be locked and no one will be
allowed in after 7:00 pm
The candidate must attend a retreat with the
Carmelite Sisters. For information call 281931-1698 or 281-445-8830.
The candidate must attend a Day of
Reflection on a Saturday before her
quinceañera. Date will be announced.
Young men will NOT be allowed to stand
with the attendees during Mass ceremony.
Dress Code is modest for both the candidate
and her attendees. (Clothes must reflect the
occasion – nothing too revealing can be
worn)
The candidate must have received the
sacraments of Baptism, First Penance and
First Communion.
Candidate and parents must do community
service hours. (5 hours)
The Quinceañera celebrations are held once
a month on the fourth Saturday of the month
at 10:00 a.m. These are group celebrations.
There is no quinceañera Mass in December.

¿Que es una fiesta de
Quince Años?
Una tradición que está ganando simpatía y
popularidad entre las comunidades mexicanaamericana es la fiesta que se celebra en honor de
una señorita que cumple sus quince años y que por
esa razón se llama quinceañera. Probablemente esta
costumbre se remonta a los mayas y toltecas. El
joven muchacho no era considerado como persona
sino hasta que cumplía los 15 años. Era entonces
cuando se le presentaba a la comunidad tribal y se
convertía en guerrero confiándosele escudo y una
espada. De esta manera empezaba a pertenecer
legalmente a la comunidad. De la misma manera, la
doncella era presentada a la comunidad como fuerza
vital de la tribu, capaz de dotarla de guerreros. Era
entonces cuando se le confiaba una misión y una
responsabilidad para con la comunidad; y la joven la
aceptaba, a su vez, como parte de ella.
Es necesario recordar también la costumbre judía de
la presentación al templo de la joven doncella, con el
propósito de señalarle los deberes y
responsabilidades que a su edad tenía para con el
grupo humano al que pertenecía. En la actualidad, sin
embargo, el sesgo de esta costumbre es en el
sentido de una mera presentación de la chica ante la
sociedad; y esto, que es bueno, debe tener una
dimensión religiosa y espiritual. Es un momento muy
importante para que la niña-mujer se dé cuenta de los
valores, y las demandas que le hace la comunidad
cristiana.
La celebración en honor de la quinceañera, no es un
sacramento en si mismo; sin embargo, los
sacramentos de la Penitencia y de la Eucaristía son
partes esenciales de la celebración.
Deberá evitarse con cuidado la tendencia “clasista”
que puede conllevar la celebración.

CELEBRACION DE LOS QUINCE AÑOS
Ese una tradición que la comunidad mexicanaamericana celebre a sus hijas en sus quince años.

La familia debe ser registrada en la
parroquia de San Bartolomé
La candidata y su familia deben asistir a
misa regularmente. (El uso de los sobres
demostrara la asistencia a la Misa del
domingo)
La candidata debe estar registrada en clases
de catecismo (CCE) y debe haber
completado dos años antes de la
celebración de sus quince años (13, 14 y 15
años) y debe continuar clases de CCE para
recibir la confirmación.
La candidata debe asistir a seis clases de
quinceañera las cuales se celebran dos
veces al año en Febrero o Septiembre a las
7:00 pm. Los padres deben asistir la primera
y la ultima clase. Para registrarse para
estas clases debe venir a la oficina
parroquial y pagar una cuota de $40
antes de comenzar las clases. Deben
llegar quince minutos antes de la hora;
después las puertas van a estar cerradas
y no se permitirá el ingreso nadie
después de 7:00 pm.
La candidata debe asistirá un retiro con las
Carmelitas Misioneras. Para mas

La candidata debe asistir a la parroquia a un
Día de Reflexión el sábado antes de su
celebración.
No se admitirán chambelanes para la Misa.
El vestido es modesto para la candidata y
sus asistentes. (La ropa debe reflejar la
sobriedad de la ocasión)
La candidata debe haber recibido los
sacramentos de Bautismo, Confesión y
haber hecho la Primera Comunión.
La celebración de los quince años es una
ves al mes y es el cuarto sábado del mes a
las 10:00 a.m. Estés celebraciones son en
grupo. No hay Misa de quinceañera in
diciembre.
