success stories 2007 ANNUAL REPORT our mission To strengthen the lives of those in need by giving help that empowers and hope that lasts Cover photos Second from left by Laura Sikes. All others by Nick Crettier. a message For more than 78 years, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington has opened doors to help and hope. Anticipating, responding to, and advocating for the needs of the poor and disadvantaged is what we do. Why? Why are we compelled to serve a community so often overlooked? While we may operate in an area ripe with politicians and lobbyists, we aren’t legislated to do so. There is no congressional mandate compelling us to take action. Rather, we’re spurred by a much different Higher Power. Catholic Charities, its staff and its numerous volunteers choose to help the poor and disadvantaged because we long to imitate Christ. Just as Jesus cared for the less fortunate, healing lepers, forgiving tax collectors and feeding the masses, we likewise offer medical care, legal aid and emergency resources to individuals and families in need. Catholic Charities touches the lives of more than 100,000 individuals in the metropolitan area each year. With knowledgeable and dedicated staff, volunteers, and community partners, our programs focus on six closely connected areas: people who are homeless, vulnerable children, adults and families in crisis, people with developmental disabilities, people living with mental illness, and immigrants and refugees. No matter the program, we strive to create an organization where all those in need can find access to comprehensive, integrated and culturally competent social services. Ed J. Orzechowski President / CEO, Catholic Charities With kindness and compassion, and, above all, love, Catholic Charities helps individuals and families to grow in competence and capacity and eventually achieve self-sufficiency. The stories included on the pages of this calendar illustrate only a few of our successes this past year, yet all illustrate God’s love manifest in our work. Consider Brenda Hall (January), a mother once struggling with addiction and homelessness, now gainfully employed by the District Department of Veterans Affairs; the Paz family (March), asylum-seekers from Colombia who found sanctuary in Washington, DC; and Mr. Duran’s (May) renewed zest for life following cataract surgery. We are proud to share these stories of personal triumph with you. Many of them, it’s probably fair to say, may not have had such happy endings without your generosity. It’s your unfailing support and tremendous commitment to our work that allows Catholic Charities to open doors to opportunity and empower those we serve to achieve their goals. Thank you for sharing in our mission. Mary D. Yerrick Chair of the Board of Directors, Catholic Charities our work Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington assists individuals and families in need, especially those who are most vulnerable. We believe in helping people develop the skills and strength to move from crisis or isolation to stability and growth. We focus on prevention when possible, intervention when needed, and advocacy when resources or opportunities are either inadequate or unfair. We are guided in this work by the richness of Catholic social teaching. a message No matter our wealth, we are all called to give. We may have material possessions (Jesus) sat down beyond that of the widow cited in Mark, or we may tithe knowing we may do without one thing or another. Regardless of our circumstances, Christ calls on us each to give what we can — perhaps even more than is comfortable. Not everyone is able to serve the poor and vulnerable one-on-one, like the staff of Catholic Charities, but we all can support these esteemed men and women in their work. opposite the treasury and Catholic Charities Foundation supports the full spectrum of agency programs and services.
