“Proclaim God’s Glory”
Dear Friends,
Proclaim God’s glory to all the nations! Strive
to enter through the narrow gate!
Two commands, two expectations from the
Father and the Son in today‘s readings serve
to remind us of the call of the disciple, the
call of the follower of God. I wonder if that
is what we are doing, as individuals, and as a
community of faith.
Proclaiming our God’s great glory necessitates being aware of
the Glory of God in our midst. Do we see the wonders God has
done? Do we stop our busy lives and see that God is present,
here and now, and is working in our lives? Just look around.
Reflect on your life.
See the working of the Holy Spirit. Acknowledge it. Allow
the Spirit to work in you and through you. Permit yourself to
be moved and guided by the Holy Sprit. When we commit to
this the words of our sung psalm today will ring true, “All the
ends of the earth have seen the power of God!” These invitations
to a deeper relationship with the Lord, constantly being sent
to us through the words of our scripture writers, require a
disciplined response. It is a lot easier to allow our own will, our
own desires, our own wants and needs to direct us.
So, Jesus tells us about the narrow gate. Only the true disciples,
the disciplined ones, will enter it. This reminds me of the
summer sessions, the training camps, for the fall sports. Aren’t
the coaches telling their teams to work hard, to be disciplined,
and to sacrifice for the sake of the team and the sake of the goal?
The players respond. They work hard at practice one, two, and
even three times a day. They study the playbooks and fuel their
bodies with the healthiest of foods. They sacrifice much so that
they can gain the prize. God bids us to do the same with our
spiritual selves.
The prize beyond the narrow gate is Eternal Life. It is no mere
divisional championship or passing win. Eternal Life! So let’s
not be complacent; let us not be lazy. Let’s put up with trials
and difficulties for the sake of the kingdom. Let us be willing to
sacrifice our own selfish wants so that God’s will may be done.
When we do God’s will, in our thoughts, words, and deeds, we
proclaim the glory of God.
Great things are happening at Saint John Berchmans! As I write
this, the whole staff busies itself with the work of preparation.
We begin anew this week. We welcomed the teachers back
last week and we welcome the school families back Sunday and
throughout this week. Before we know it religious education
will begin. We ready ourselves for another successful school and
religious education year.
We still have spots available in most of the classrooms. If you
know of families seeking excellent Catholic education for
their children, please direct them our way. Financial aid for
the students is always available. Our philosophy states that any
student who wants to attend Saint John Berchmans can attend
Saint John Berchmans. We find a way.
We continue to pray about the future of the Church in Chicago
and our local Church. We participate in the Renew My
Church efforts of the Archdiocese. Over the next few weeks
you will see results of the Archdiocesan survey and our own
parish life survey. As we strive to be the vibrant, self sufficient,
energetic, evangelizing parish that God calls us to be, I invite
you to consider your own commitment to this place. As the
Archdiocesan officials gauge vitality and fiscal viability, I want
them to see this place is on fire with the love of God and as
able to stand firm and strong, and as ready to lead other
communities closer to God. Every parishioner must commit to
making this happen. Every one of us can make a difference in the
evangelization efforts. Consider your spiritual fitness and what
you’re offering. Consider how you are proclaiming the glory of
God to all the nations (at least how you are proclaiming to the
world you know). Consider entering the narrow gate. It leads
to true happiness.

THINKING ABOUT BECOMING A CATHOLIC?
Is God calling you to a deeper relationship? Looking for
answers to questions you can’t quite name? Consider joining
our RCIA program. The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (RCIA) is for anyone 18 and older who would like
to learn more about the Catholic faith and for those who
seek to be baptized, receive First Holy Communion and be
confirmed in the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also help
you complete the necessary steps to become a member
of the Catholic Church if you were baptized in another
Christian denomination. RCIA meets on Thursday evenings,
three times per month from September to April. If you are
interested in learning more, if you know of anyone who
might be a candidate for this journey, or if you are willing
to help as a catechist or sponsor, please contact Shelagh

SJB Youth Group: TONIGHT
MINISTRY OF CARE VISITS TO THE SICK AND
HOMEBOUND
Everyone between the ages of 13 and 18
is invited to come check us out on tonight,
from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the gym of the
Altgeld school building at Maplewood and
Altgeld.
Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at St.
John Berchmans. Ministers of Care are available to bring
communion to parishioners who are unable to attend Mass
due to illness or infirmity. A communion visit includes time
to listen and pray, as well as sharing the Eucharist, with those
who are homebound, in nursing homes or in the hospital.
This ministry is provided by trained and certified lay people,
members of religious communities, and ordained deacons
and priests. To request a visit from a Minister of Care, for
yourself or a loved one, please call the parish office in the
rectory at 773-486-4300 and ask for Shelagh Donoghue.

Are you thirsting for a more disciplined prayer life? This new
six week program will focus on group study and prayer using
Joyce Rupp’s book, “The Cup of Our Life.” Open your eyes
to see how the ordinary cups we use each day can become
sacred vessels that connect us with life and draw us closer to
God. This program will meet Thursdays, Sept. 22-Oct. 27,
from 9-11 a.m. in the St. John Berchmans School Chapel.
Materials will be provided. There is a suggested donation of

Queridos Amigos,
Dios. Cuando hacemos la voluntad de Dios, en nuestros pensamientos,
palabras y acciones, proclamamos la gloria de Dios.
¡Proclamen la gloria de Dios a todas las naciones!
Esfuércense por entrar por la puerta, que es angosta!
Dos comandos, dos expectativas del Padre y el
Hijo en las lecturas de hoy sirven para recordarnos
de la convocatoria del discípulo, la llamada de
los seguidores de Dios. Me pregunto si eso es lo
que estamos haciendo, como individuos y como
¡Grandes cosas están sucediendo en San Juan Berchmans! Mientras
escribo esto, todo el personal está ocupado trabajando y preparándose.
Empezamos nuevamente esta semana. Dimos la bienvenida a los
maestros la semana pasada y damos la bienvenida a las familias de la
escuela este domingo y durante toda esta semana. Antes de darnos
cuenta el Programa de Educación Religiosa comenzará. Nos preparamos
para otro exitoso año escolar y de educación religiosa.

ha hecho? ¿Detenemos nuestras ocupadas vidas y vemos que Dios está
presente, aquí y ahora, y está obrando en nuestras vidas? Basta con mirar.
Reflexione sobre su vida.

Continuamos orando por el futuro de la Iglesia en Chicago y
nuestra Iglesia local. Participamos en el esfuerzo de Renueva Mi Iglesia
de la Arquidiócesis. Durante las próximas semanas verá los resultados
de la encuesta de la Arquidiócesis y nuestra propia encuesta de vida
parroquial. Mientras nos esforzamos por ser la vibrante, autosuficiente,
enérgica, evangelizadora parroquia que Dios nos llama a ser, le invito a

arduamente, que sean disciplinados, y se sacrifiquen por el bien del
equipo y por el motivo de la meta? Los jugadores responden. Trabajan
duro en las prácticas una, dos y hasta tres veces al día. Ellos estudian los
libros de deportes y se alimentan con los alimentos más saludables para
sus cuerpos. Se sacrifican mucho para que poder ganar el premio. Dios
nos invita a que hagamos lo mismo con nuestro ser espiritual.
Paz,
El premio más allá de la puerta angosta es la vida eterna. No es solo
un campeonato divisional o la victoria. ¡Es la vida eterna! Así que no
seamos complacientes; no seamos perezosos. Enfrentemos las pruebas y
dificultades por el bien del reino. Debemos estar dispuestos a sacrificar
nuestros propios deseos egoístas para que se pueda hacer la voluntad de
Nuestra Misión:
“Arraigada en Cristo y tocada por Su amor y misericordia, la comunidad de San Juan Berchmans encuentra unidad en su diversidad, proclama por medio

Teachers and Subs Needed for Religious Education Program
August 14, 2016
Religious Education classes begin on Saturday, Sept. 10. Returning
and new students are asked to register for classes as soon as possible. Blue registration forms are available in the back of church, in
the rectory office or on the parish website at: www.stjohnberchmans.org/religious-education.
Students who attended the PreCommunion or PreConfirmation
classes during the 2015-2016 school year must register again for
the coming year so they will be able to make First Holy Communion or Confirmation in 2017.
We are also looking for adults to join our team of volunteer
catechists as teachers and substitutes. Religious Education meets
from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on most Saturdays from September through
April. We provide curriculum materials and training.

Clases de educación religiosa comienzan el sábado 10 de septiembre. Se
pide que los estudiantes nuevos y los que están regresando se registren
