GENERAL 1.01 This document provides information about Release 5.4.0 of Symmetricom’s TimeScan/NMS for Solaris software. This is the initial release of the TimeScan/NMS for Solaris software. This software is compatible with the MIS card equipped with Release 5.02.02, 5.03.03, or 5.04.02 software. Issue 10-39: Multiple users can update settings in different applications without warnings or indications or without setting other users to read-only configuration. • Issue 12-77: When an RS-232 link to a DCD shelf is broken, a “DCD not responding.” message appears. However, no Heart Beat failure is generated. Work-around: None. 5. Additional 7.01 A working familiarity with the Solaris operating system on a Sun SPARC workstation is required. 7.05 The following additional items are required: A. Hardware 7.02 The following is the minimum computer configuration: • Sun SPARC workstation with a single 266 MHz SPARC microprocessor • 512 MB RAM • 4.0 GB hard disk • CD-ROM drive • 24-bit color video card • License for Informix software: The license includes character strings for the license and key. The license may be provided in printed form or delivered by electronic mail. • License for TimeScan/NMS Release 5.4.0 software: This license is usually provided on a floppy disk, but may also be sent by electronic mail as a file attachment or regular plain text message. A way to copy the information into the workstation is required. In machines without a floppy disk, typing the license information may be required. For Symmetricom to create the license, the host id of the workstation where it will be installed must be provided to Symmetricom (the process will take approximately one week). B. Software 7.03 The following software items are required: • Solaris 2.6 for SPARC CD-ROM (desktop or server version) • TimeScan/NMS 5.4.0 CD-ROM C. Documentation IP address: 7.04 The following manuals are required for this software installation: Document • The IP address, hostname, sub-net mask, gateway address, and other network parameters are required for the computer where TimeScan 5.4.0 is to be installed. Workstation Preparation Procedure STEP PROCEDURE Use this procedure to prepare the wokstation for the installation of this release of the TimeScan/NMS software. This procedure assumes that the person installing the software has a working knowledge of the Solaris operating system. Notes: 1. In this procedure, the operating system is installed, the disk is partitioned, operating system patches are installed, the video card is configured, and some workstation options are discussed. 2. This is the procedure recommended for the installation of TimeScan/NMS software. If the local network administrator or IT department has policies that prevent the successful completion of this procedure, alternate methods may be used if the the results of this procedure can be achieved. Install the Solaris Operating System 1 Insert the Solaris 2.6 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. 2 Hold the Stop key and press the A key to obtain the ok prompt. (The key combination may need to be repeated several times.) 3 At the ok prompt, enter boot cdrom. 4 Wait for the machine to boot. At the Languages prompt, select English and in Locales select USA English (ASCII Only). 5 Click Continue three times, and the prompt for a hostname for this machine appears. Enter the hostname and click Continue. 6 Click Yes to assert that the machine is networked and click Continue. Enter the IP address of the machine and click Continue. 7 Change any incorrect information. Click Continue when the information is correct. 8 Select None for the name service and click Continue. Click Continue to confirm the selection. 9 Select the appropriate Subnets option and enter the correct subnet mask. Click Continue. 10 Select the appropriate geographical zone or GMT offset from the list. Set the correct local time and date and click Continue. 11 Change any incorrect information. Click Continue when the information is correct. 12 Select Initial from the menu. Click Continue. 13 Click Continue. 14 Click Continue on the Allocate Client Services page. 15 Click Continue on the Available Languages page. 16 Select End User Support on the Select Software page. 17 Select Customize. Workstation Preparation Procedure (Contd) STEP PROCEDURE Partition the Disk Notes: 1. The following steps comprise one of several methods of partitioning a disk. The minimum sizes of the partitions are: • 1 GB for the root ( / ) partition (if more disk space is available, add any amount to this partition) • 2 GB for the /TimeScan partition (if more disk space is available, add up to 1 GB to this partition) • 1 GB (or twice the amount of RAM, whichever is greater) for the swap partition 2. If disk mirroring software is to be used, consult the documentation for additional partitioning or other requirements. 19 Select all the required disks, move them to the right hand column, and click Continue. 20 At the Preserve Data screen, click Continue. 21 Select Manual Layout. 22 At the Disk Layout screen, select Customize. 23 Define the /, /TimeScan, and swap partitions and the space allocated for each. 24 Click OK, and Continue. 25 At the Mount Remote File Systems screen, click Continue. 26 Confirm the installation by clicking Begin Installation and Auto Reboot. The installation process takes about 20 minutes, and the workstation automatically reboots. 27 Enter the desired password for the superuser (root) and continue. Install the Solaris Operating System Patches Note: Several hundred patches have been released by Sun to improve the Solaris operating system. The recommended minimum cluster of patches is available from Sun. The steps to install the recommended patches follow. 28 Log in as root. Select CDE if prompted for an environment and click OK. Note: Several windows open when an account first logs in. These windows may be closed. 29 Open a terminal window. 30 Insert the TimeScan 5.4.0 CD-ROM into an empty CD-ROM drive. If there is another disk inserted, first enter eject cdrom 31 At the terminal window enter cd /cdrom/cdrom0/patches/105633-21 Page 4 Issue 1: Sep 99 TMSL 097-46600-01 Chart 1. Workstation Preparation Procedure (Contd) STEP 32 PROCEDURE Enter ./installpatch . to add the patch in this directory. 33 When complete, enter cd ../2.6_Recommended to change to the patch cluster directory. 34 Enter ./install_cluster to add the complete set of patches. A warning appears. Enter y to continue. Adding the patches may take 30 minutes. 35 Enter init 6 to reboot the workstation and install the added patches. Video Card Configuration Example Note: To obtain the best results with the TimeScan/NMS software, a video card must be able to support 24-bit color (8 bits for each of the 3 primary colors). Refer to the documentation included with the workstation to enable 24-bit color. The following is an example that enabled 24-bit color on a Sun Ultra 10 with a 3D Creator video card. Use this information only as an example. 36 As superuser, edit the file /usr/dt/config/Xservers. One method is to enter textedit /usr/dt/config/Xservers On the last line replace -nobanner with -dev /dev/fb0 defdepth 24 Additional Options 37 If desired, perform one or more of the following system changes: • Disable the built-in mail server by renaming or deleting the file /etc/mail/sendmail.cf • Define a domain name by creating a file /etc/defaultdomain that contains the domain name • Define the network router by creating a file /etc/defaultrouter that contains the IP address of the router Page 5 TMSL 097-46600-01 Issue 1: Sep 99 Chart 2. Software Installation Procedure STEP PROCEDURE Use this procedure to install this release of the TimeScan/NMS software. This procedure assumes the following: 1. The person installing the software has a working knowledge of the Solaris operating system. 2. This installation procedure installs the software in an independent partition named /TimeScan. If the software is installed elsewhere, use the appropriate disk partition and directory reference. 3. The Sun Solaris 2.6 workstation has been prepared according to Chart 1, and no additional server processes are running. Create User Accounts Notes: 1. This part creates two groups and two accounts specifically for the TimeScan/NMS software installation. One account is for the system administrator and one account is for the data base administrator. 2. Additional accounts with other names for any other users of the system may be created after installation. To create additional user accounts, use the procedure in the Sun manual and then copy the /TimeScan/NetMonitor/.profile and /TimeScan/NetMonitor/.dtprofile files into the new user home directory to have the application icons installed. 1 As superuser, in the root directory, open a terminal window. 2 Enter admintool & 3 At the Browse menu select Groups. 4 At the Edit menu Add a group. 5 Select nms as the group name, accept the suggested group ID, and leave the members field blank. Click OK. 6 Repeat Steps 4 and 5 with the group name informix. 7 At the Browse menu select Users. 8 At the Edit menu Add a user. Enter the following data in the appropriate fields (the password must be informix): User Name: informix Primaary Group: informix Login Shell: Bourne Password: (select Normal Password ... and enter informix) Path: /TimeScan/NetMonitor/informix Copy TimeScan/NMS Software Into the Computer 10 As superuser, in the root directory, open a terminal window. 11 Enter cd /TimeScan to change the current directory. 12 Insert the TimeScan 5.4.0 CD-ROM into an empty CD-ROM drive. 13 Enter uncompress -c /cdrom/cdrom0/nms5_4_0.tar.Z | tar xvf to uncompress and install the software in the /TimeScan/NetMonitor directory. 14 Enter cd /TimeScan/NetMonitor/configs 15 Enter cp /etc/system /etc/system.old to make a copy of the /etc/system file. 16 Enter cat system.nms >> /etc/system to add the contents of the system.nms file to the /etc/system file. Install TimeScan/NMS Software 17 As superuser, in the root directory, open a terminal window. 18 Enter cd /TimeScan/NetMonitor to ensure that /TimeScan/NetMonitor is the current directory. Software Installation Procedure (Contd) STEP PROCEDURE 19 Enter sh to verify the Bourne shell is active. 20 Enter MONITORHOME=/TimeScan/NetMonitor export MONITORHOME 21 Enter ./installNMS to install the software. 22 Follow the instructions on the screen, including entering the character strings for the Informix license and key. Note: The installation software is case-sensitive. 23 At the question about the client SDK answer no. 24 Follow the instructions on the screen, including entering the Informix license and key. Note: Ignore the link errors at the end of the installation process. Configuring the System 25 Open the text file /etc/init.d/memon for editing. Insert trap "" 1 as the first line after the initial comments. Note: Comments are indicated by the # symbol. Use vi, textedit, or any other text editor available on the workstation. The following example uses the textedit text editor. textedit /etc/init.d/memon 26 Use the following commands to link memon, so the software automatically starts and stops. ln /etc/init.d/memon /etc/rc2.d/S99memon ln /etc/init.d/memon /etc/rc2.d/K99memon ln /etc/init.d/memon /etc/rc1.d/S99memon 27 Open the text file /TimeScan/NetMonitor/configs/setupNMS.profile for editing. Insert ulimit -n 1024 as the first line after the initial comments. 28 Page 8 Edit the file /TimeScan/NetMonitor/informix/etc/sqlhosts.nms. Software Installation Procedure (Contd) STEP PROCEDURE 29 If a tape drive is not used to make backups, edit the TimeScan NMS configuration file /TimeScan/NetMonitor/informix/etc/onconfig.nms, and change the TAPESIZE value from 10240 to 102400. If a tape drive is used to make backups, please contact Symmetricom for additional recommendations. 30 The TimeScan/NMS license file is delivered on a floppy disk or by email. Copy the license file into the /TimeScan/NetMonitor/License folder on the workstation. Make sure license.lic is the file name. 31 Open the license.lic file in a text editor. 32 The first line of the license, labeled SERVER, specifies the host name and host ID of the workstation licensed to operate TimeScan/NMS. Replace hostname_here on the first line of the license with the host name of the workstation. 33 From a terminal window, enter the showrev command. Verify that the hostID reported by the showrev command matches the hostID on the SERVER line of the license. 34 Enter cd /TimeScan/NetMonitor to change the current directory. 35 Enter uncompress -c /cdrom/cdrom0/patches/NMS_Patch01.tar.Z | tar xvf to install TimeScan/NMS patches and create the initial database. 36 Enter init 6 to reboot the workstation. 37 Watch for errors as the machine boots. Note: Ignore a warning about enable_sm_wa. 38 Log in as nms and select CDE if prompted for an environment. TimeScan/NMS is installed. Page 9 9 Pages
