PRE-IELTS
B. MY FAVORITE DAY
1. Read Cristina’s article. Is her Saturday like yours?
MY FAVORITE DAY
My favorite day of the week is Saturday because it’s the first day of the weekend!
I get up very early during the week, so on Saturday it’s nice to get up late, and I always stay in
bed until about 10.30. Then I usually go shopping with a friend. In Mexico, stores are
sometimes closed on Sundays, so Saturday is the best day for shopping. We don’t always buy
anything, but we have fun just looking.
I often have lunch with my mother and brother. It’s great because my mom is a really good
cook and she always makes things we like, and my brother and I have time to talk about our
week. After lunch, I sometimes study from about 4:00 to 6:00, especially if I have exams.
In the evening, I usually go out with my friends. We often go to the movies, and then we have
a pizza or tacos. I never go to bed before 1:00 or sometimes later.
2. You are going to write an article for a magazine called My favorite day. Write four
paragraphs. First, look at the questions and make notes of what you can say.
a. What’s your favorite day of the week? Why?
b. What do you usually do in the morning?

Schoolchildren in China learn that the opening
of the East-West trading route popularly known
as the silk road occurred in139 B.C. When
Zhang Qian, the Chinese ambassadoradventurer, travelled westward across the
Pamirs, a mountain range in Central Asia. He
was the first known Chinese person to do so.
The term ‘silk road’ was actually first used late
in the nineteenth century by a German
geographer, Baron Ferdinand von Richthofen
(1833-1905). Silk was not the only material that
passed along these routes. Other goods are
known to have included ceramics, glass,
precious gems and livestock.
39
Alay Valley. Whatever the truth about the
Stone Tower may be, it seems likely that
some form trade was taking place in this
region millennia before more formal
recorded trade took place.
On the other hand, it is difficult to believe
that people in those times were able to travel
such huge distances. Travelling from West
to East, the trader first had to cross the
Pamir Plateau, through the 20,000-foothigh mountains. If the weather in the
mountains had been kind and the journey
undertaken in the right season, the eastward
bound traveller would then finally arrive at
the Kashgar, a logical place for trade and
PRE-IELTS
However, there are reasons to think that these
roads were being used centuries, probably even
millennia, earlier than Zhang’s expedition. In
Roman times, Pliny the Elder reported a ‘stone
tower’ which he said existed on the Pamir
Plateau where goods had been traditionally
exchanged between traders from the East and
the West. In the early second century, Maës
Titianus, an ancient Roman-Macedonian
traveller, actually reported reaching this
famous Stone Tower, but its exact location
remains uncertain. According to one theory, it
was at Tashkurgan in the Pamirs. (The word
‘Tashkurgan’ actually means ‘stone tower’ or
‘stone fortress’ in the Uyghur language).
Scholars today, however, believe that its
location was probably somewhere in the
rest, where they could exchange horses or
camels and then start on the return journey
back over the mountains before the winter
snows started.
It is unlikely that in these earlier times
traders or travellers from Kashgar, as they
would have had to go round the Taklamakan
Desert. Going through it was not an option
as its name suggests: it literally means ‘Go
in and you won’t come out’. Beyond this
desert, there still would have remained eight
hundred miles of a dangerous journey
before they would have found the first true
signs of Chinese civilization.

Young (Godiva Press).
READING PASSAGE 2
You should spend about 20 minutes on questions 1-14 which are based on Reading
passage 2 below.
Is this the end of the High Street?
Take a walk down any ‘High Street’, normally places full of shops, and you’ll notice
signs that all is not well: they will say ‘To Let’.
The High Street faces real competition from out-of-town retail parks and the steady
growth of supermarkets, both in number and in size. There is also the growing trend for
people to shop online, combined with a reduction in many families’ finances which has
affected customer confidence.
Retailing (the sale of goods from a fixed location) is changing too: shopping is becoming
a leisure activity as much as a necessity, along with the rise of home delivery services
saving time and journeys. Convenience is a powerful motivator for shoppers’ behavior.
Is the traditional High Street dying out?
During the last two years, independent retailers have struggled more than the chain stores.
Research suggests over 12,000 independent stores closed in 2009. Economies of scale (it
is cheaper to buy stock in bulk, so big shops can change lower prices) are one part of the
issue.
40
PRE-IELTS
Supermarkets have a stronger control over the supply chain and can manipulate prices
more effectively. As a result of the decline in smaller stores, there are now many empty
shops in most town centers, some of which have been vacant for some time, and have
whitewashed windows. What impact do they have on the overall ‘feel’ of the town for
visitors and residents?
More importantly, how does the loss of a familiar shop which has perhaps served decades
of local residents affect people at a time when so many other familiar aspects of daily
life are under threat? When a shopping mall is being planned, it is very important to
secure the key ‘anchor’ tenants: the big names that can guarantee customers through the
doors. Is the disappearance of these familiar local shops and small department stores like
losing a link with the past?
The growth of CCTV cameras, use of private security firms and blurring of public and
private land has also been an issue in cities such as Exeter. This can result in young
people feeling that they are being victimized and forced out of city centers.
Another feature of many city centers is that they are beginning to look very similar to
each other. The New Economics Foundation introduced the term ‘clone town’ in a report
published in 2004. This suggests that many High Streets have few individual
characteristics – the same shops can be seen in most towns. This was also followed up
by a report in 2010, which identified Cambridge as the most ‘cloned’ city in the UK: one
with very few independent stores in the center.
Vacant shops are another issue for town centers. These can end up as charity shops, ‘popup’ shops (especially around Christmas) or attract vandals and graffiti. Some cities such
as Portsmouth have made an effort to revamp empty store-fronts to improve those areas
where they are found. This is important for cities which attract large numbers of tourists,
such as Bath, York and Chester.
Services are perhaps more resilient to these changes, particularly those that offer
something that is not available online. As one person commented: ‘You can’t have your
hair cut online …’ – well, not yet anyway. This partly explains the growth of coffee shops
and nail bars in some town centers, which are going against the general trend.
Finally, out on the edges of our towns, the supermarkets continue to grow – they’ve got
the town center surrounded. A report published in late 2010 said that around 55p of every
£1 that we spend is spent in supermarkets, and there have been a large number of planning
application for further stores.

PRACTICE 1 – WRITING
A. Many students in the UK take a gap year after school and before going to university. In
fact about 250 000 do every year. Most of them want to combine travel with making
money or doing voluntary work. But whatever their reasons, students need to think
carefully about what they do. There are number of advantages to taking a gap year.
B. First of all, it gives people time to decide what degree they want to have in the future.
It also allows them to learn more about the world, for example, learning differrent
languages, experiencing different cultures and seeing landscapes they have never seen
before.
C. However, many people argue that travelling for a year is just a long holiday. It is also
expensive and it might be better to spend the money on education. Some students also
forget how to study during their gap and find it hard to study again when they return
home.
D. In conclusion, there are a lot of advantages and disadvantages in taking a gap year. In
my opinion, a gap year is a valuable experience, but one whole year is too long.
Voluntary work is that you do because you want to, not because you have to do it.
Volunteers work to make things better and are not paid for what they do.

HOW TO HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERY DAY
Many people want to know how to work harder and feel better. How can you have a great
day at school or at the office? A good daily routine can help you to have a great
day every day.
A Get up early
Many people want to stay in bed in the morning, but it is best to get up before 7:00 a.m. If
you start working or studying early, you will have more ideas and you will be able to
work faster. Many well-known writers and musicians from the past believed that it was
important to get up early – and to go to bed early too. You should also try to get up at the
same time every day, because this is good for your body and brain.
57
PRE-IELTS
B Eat breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. People often say that they don’t have
time to eat breakfast, but they will find it more difficult to start work, and they will soon
feel very hungry. A healthy meal of toast, eggs, and fruit juice will help you to work well
all morning – and stop you from eating unhealthy food like crisps and chocolate later in
the morning!
C Go for a walk
If you usually spend a lot of time in your office or in the classroom, it is very important to
go outside and get some fresh air. If you spend just 30 minutes a day walking outside, you
will feel less tired and you will be able to do more when you get back to work or school.
A walk in the park every day will make you feel much healthier and will help you to do
your best work.

screen again to help you.

Thank you for your email. It was very interesting to hear about your daily life in
Cambridge, England. I am writing to tell you about my typical day in Rome. On school
days I usually (do/get/have) up at 7:00 a.m. I have a shower and (do/get/make). In Italy,
we don’t have to wear a school uniform, so I normally wear jeans and a tee-shirt. Then I
(do/have/take) breakfast with my parents and sister. I usually eat bread with jam and
drink orange juice. My school starts at 8:30 a.m., so I leave my house at 8:00 a.m. I don’t
live far from the school, so I walk there with my friends. My sister’s school is far away, so
she takes a bus. I have lessons in the morning until 1:00 p.m. and then I go home and
(do/go/have) lunch with my mum. In Italy we often eat a lot for lunch, including pasta,
meat and salad, but we have a much smaller dinner. In the afternoon I do my homework
and help my mum to (do/have/make) the housework. I do the washing up
and (do/have/take) out the bins. I have football practice on Tuesday afternoons and a
piano lesson on Thursday afternoons. I have dinner at about 7:00 p.m. Every day after

1 Jane lives in Cambridge/ Rome
2 On school days, Alessia usually wears a school uniform/ jeans and a T-shirt.
3 Alessia lives close to/ far from her school.
4 Alessia normally eats a big/ small lunch.
5 Alessia plays football/ the piano on Thursdays.
6 Alicia always/ sometimes goes for a walk after dinner.
Exercise 5: Read the text about professional swimmer Michael Daley’s day. Then
complete the next exercise.
I usually get up at around 6:00 a.m. Before I became a professional swimmer, I
got up late most days, but I don’t ever stay in bed now, even on Sundays! I always go to
the gym in the mornings. I spend about 30 minutes on the running machine, and then
another 30 minutes doing other exercises. It is very important for me to stay fit and
healthy. I only spend two hours at the gym when I have a big swimming competition. I
get home from the gym at about 8:00 a.m., have a shower and get dressed. I always have
a big breakfast of cereal with banana, toast, eggs, coffee and orange juice. Breakfast is the
most important meal of the day for me because I do a lot of swimming every day. After
breakfast, I go for a long walk in the park near my house. The exercise helps me to relax
and feel prepared for the rest of the day.
Then it’s time for me to start work. From 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. I normally go
to the swimming pool and train for two hours with my personal trainer. I swim about five
kilometers, and practice diving. After my training, I usually have a meeting with my
trainer to talk about how well I’m doing and what I still need to work on. I sometimes
have lunch at the pool café with my trainer, but if I have a television interview, I’ll walk
over to the TV studio. All my friends think that it’s exciting to be on television, but it
takes a long time to film, so it can be a bit boring. It’s not difficult to do TV interviews,
but it takes a long time to get ready. At home, it takes me about 20 minutes to have a
shower, get dressed and do my hair, or maybe half an hour if I’m going somewhere
special, but at the TV studio it takes an hour! If I have a big competition coming up, then
I do more training in the afternoon, or have more meetings with my trainer.

PRE-IELTS
In the evenings, I usually relax at home with my wife, Emma. I quite enjoy
cooking, so we often eat at home together. Emma hated my cooking at first, but now she
thinks it’s OK. Her father is a chef at a top restaurant, so she loves good food. We
sometimes go to a restaurant for dinner. We both love Korean food, and there’s a great
place near my house. I never eat fast food like burgers and kebabs, or my trainer will get
angry with me. Then Emma and I usually watch a film on television. We both love
comedy films, and Emma also likes romantic films, but I’m not a big fan – I prefer action
films. I usually go to bed at 10.00 p.m. because I need to be back in the gym by 7.00 a.m.

LISTENING SCRIPT
Exercise 4 (Track 1.11)
Tom: How many people live in your house, Sanjay?
Sanjay: Six. Me and five friends from college.
Tom: Wow! That’s a lot! Is it difficult?
Sanjay: Not really, because it’s a big house and we all have different daily routines.
Tom: OK.
Sanjay: For example, I’m the only one who has lunch at home, so at that time of day, I have
the house to myself. It’s quiet so I usually use the computer and check my emails, or
sometimes I watch TV.
Tom: I see.
Sanjay: Marc has a part time job in a restaurant, so he’s not there in the evenings. I only
really see him in the mornings. And Blas cooks dinner every day, so he’s always in the
kitchen.
Tom: That’s nice for you!
Sanjay: Yes, he’s a great cook. But he doesn’t usually do the washing up afterwards! Luke
leaves the house very early, so he gets up before everyone else, to catch the bus.
Tom: So, I suppose he goes to bed early as well.
Sanjay: No, he doesn’t. In fact, Luke goes to bed very late so he doesn’t sleep very much.
John is the same, he stays up late and plays chess with Luke, but he doesn’t get up early
because he studies in the afternoon.
Tom: Oh? I thought you told me he teaches in the morning.
Sanjay: No that’s Sam, he teaches French in the morning; I’m not sure what he does in the
afternoon …
Exercise 5 (Track 1.12)
I wake up at 7 o’clock. My husband, Jack, wakes up at the same time. He gets up
immediately but I stay in bed. Jack brings me a cup of tea at about 7:15 and then I get up at
7:30. We have a son, Simon, and a daughter, Julia. They get up at about 8 o’clock. Julia has a
shower first, then Simon. We usually have breakfast together and then Simon and Julia leave
for college. Julia is often late because she always watches TV after breakfast, but Simon
always catches the bus on time, even though he always does the washing-up before he leaves
the house.
I’m a designer and I don’t need to travel to work because I have an office here in the house.
Jack works in a bank. It’s in the city centre so he drives to work, but if the weather’s nice, he
sometimes walks. He has lunch with colleagues. I have lunch at home; I make something
simple because we usually have a big meal in the evening for dinner. And of course, Simon
and Julia have lunch at college.
After college, Simon usually goes to the gym and Julia sometimes plays chess with a friend.
My husband often goes shopping on the way home and buys something for dinner, and I
71
PRE-IELTS
usually clean the house and then I often read the newspaper, or sometimes, if I have time, I
phone a friend for a chat.
We prepare dinner together. Jack’s an excellent cook. Simon and Julia like cooking too. I
don’t like it as much, but I’m quite good. Sometimes Jack goes to watch Simon play
basketball at the sports centre. But Simon usually takes the bins out and Julia usually does the
washing up. Later, before we go to bed, Jack and I watch TV for a while, usually with Simon,
and Julia chats with her friends online on her laptop. We all go to bed at about 11 o’clock but
I don’t go to sleep immediately. I always read for at least half an hour before I turn off the
light!
Exercise 10 (Track 1.13)
Sandra: Welcome to the college. Let me introduce myself. My name is Sandra Field and I
work in the main office here. I’m going to show you round the building this morning. We are
now in the main entrance. This is the reception here and that is the main office. You can go
there if you have any questions or problems. These are the toilets on the left of the reception
and those are the stairs over there in the corner. Here on the ground floor there is also a room
for students and a café. For those of you who drive, there are two large car parks to the right
and left of the main building. But you must arrive early to find a place to park. The car parks
are usually full by nine o’clock. OK, let’s go up to the first floor now. At the top of the stairs
there are about 20 classrooms, the library and the computer room. Any questions so far?
Student: Is there a drinks machine in the student room?
Sandra: Yes, there is. It sells drinks and snacks, so you can get something when the cafeteria
is closed.
Student: Is there a cash machine?
Sandra: No, there isn’t a cash machine in the college, but there are two banks and a post
office very near here.
Student: Are there any shops near here?
Sandra: Yes, there are. There’s a chemist, a bookshop and a small supermarket.
Student: Is there a sports center?
Sandra: Yes, there is. It’s near the supermarket.
Student: Are there any public telephones in the college?
Sandra: No, there aren’t. Nearly all students have mobile phones nowadays. If there is a
problem, you can use the telephone in the office. OK?

Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Haruka Murukami. I come from Tokyo in Japan. I am coming to the USA in August
and will start my course at New College in September. Thank you for sending me the course
information. I felt a bit worried about the course before, but now I feel really excited about
studying at New College. I am writing to find out about student accommodation for international
students. I would like to know what the rooms are like and what furniture they have. I would
also like to know where students like me who live on the campus can eat.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
Haruka.

4.Haruka feels …………… about the course now.
5. Haruka wants to know what …………… the rooms have.
6. Haruka wants to know where she is able to ……………
Exercise 3: Read the text. Then complete the exercise.
Many international students come to study at New College every year. There are three main
types of accommodation available to international students: college halls of residence, private
houses or flats, and host families.
A. College halls of residence
There are three halls of residence on the college campus. Tulip Hall and Rose Hall have
single rooms for students with a bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, cupboard and a bookcase. There
are shared bathrooms and a shared kitchen. In Holly Hall, the rooms also have their own
bathrooms. Students have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the college restaurant. The college
halls of residence are a good choice for students who want to make new friends, but would
prefer not to cook their own meals.
B. Private houses or flats
Some students prefer to find their own house or flat in the city. This is more expensive than
staying on campus or with a host family, but many students like to do this because they can
80
PRE-IELTS
live with their friends. Students can find houses and flats to rent in the city on the college
website. This is a good option for students who prefer to cook for themselves. There is often
a living room where students can spend time together when they are not working.
C. Host families
Another popular choice for international students is to stay with a local host family. Students
live in a house or flat with a family. The family makes breakfast and dinner for the student,
but they need to buy their own lunch. The family also spends time with them in the evening
and organises activities for the weekend. All students have their own bedroom, and share the
bathroom, living room and kitchen with the family. This is a really good way for international
students to improve their level of English quickly by talking to members of the host family.
Match the information with the three paragraphs. Read the text again to help you.

Exercise 5: Read about professional runner Rosa Martinez and where she goes on
holiday. Then complete the exercise.
A As a famous runner, I do a lot of travelling as part of my job. Last year I did races in
London, New York, Paris and Dubai. I also went to Thailand for a big sports event, which
was an amazing experience. However, when I have time to take a holiday, I love going to my
aunt and uncle’s house in the south of Spain. I go there for two weeks every summer with my
whole family. My aunt and uncle bought the house when I was very young, and I still
remember the summers I spent there when I was a child. It is a beautiful house and my
favorite place to stay in the whole world.
B The house is just outside a small village and it is close to the mountains and the sea. It is
more than 100 years old. In the past, it was a farm with horses, chickens and sheep. There are
no animals there now, but there is still a lot of land, so the house has a really big garden. In
the garden, there is a barbecue area, and we often have dinner there in the summertime. There
are fruit trees, vegetables and a lot of flowers. We don’t need a swimming pool, because the
house is so close to the sea. We always spend a lot of time at the beach when we go there in
the summer.
C All of the rooms are large and pretty. On the ground floor, there is a big kitchen and living
room, a bathroom and one bedroom. Upstairs there is one large bedroom with its own small
bathroom. You can see the mountains from this bedroom. There are two more bedrooms
where you can see the sea. My favorite bedroom is the first one on the left when you go up
the stairs. I used to stay there when I was a child. It has a seat in the window where I like to
82
PRE-IELTS
sit and read books or write letters.
D The style of the house is very traditional. There is a very large dinner table in the kitchen,
so that the whole family can sit down and eat together. The living room has comfortable
chairs and a large television screen. We often watch films or play games there in the
evenings. My uncle made a lot of the furniture himself. He made the tables and chairs in the
kitchen and all the beds. The walls are all painted in different shades of green and blue to
look like the sea. My aunt loves to paint and does beautiful paintings of the mountains and
the sea in the area. There are many of these paintings on the walls.
E The house is close to some of the most beautiful countryside in the area, and it is possible
to walk to some of the best beaches, where there are not many people. In fact, we sometimes
have the whole beach to ourselves! The village is a short walk or bicycle ride from the house,
and you can find some lovely cafés and restaurants in the main square. I often go canoeing,
horse riding and hiking nearby. It is great to get away from the city and relax in nature.

LISTENING SCRIPT
Exercise 3.
This is a large detached house in a quiet street close to the centre of the village. You can walk
to schools and shops, and the train station is only one and a half kilometres away. Last year,
there was some building work which made the study and the dining room bigger, and the
owners made the attic into an extra bedroom, so the total area of the house is now about 150
square metres; before it was only 120 square metres.
The house has four bedrooms so it’s a good size for a family with children. The largest
bedroom has a private bathroom. One of the other bedrooms has a private shower room and
the other two bedrooms have lots of cupboards. On the ground floor, apart from the hall, the
study and the dining room, there’s a lounge, and a very big kitchen. There isn’t a large garden
at the front of the house, but there’s a very pleasant, large, sunny garden at the back of the
house where you can have barbecues in the summer. You can get to the garden through glass
doors from the lounge. There’s no garage, but there’s enough space to park two cars on the
road at the front of the house.
The owners have spent a lot of money on the house over the years and kept it in very good
condition, so they’re hoping to sell it for about 350,000 euros. I agree, and I think this is a
very good price …
Exercise 9.
This is a photo of my family. As you can see, we’re quite a big family. This is my dad. His
name’s John and next to him on the right is my mum. Her name is Sally. Behind them is my
Auntie Jill. We’re really close. We often do things together. She’s great fun to be with. Next
to Auntie Jill is my uncle, Tom. He’s a teacher and very interesting to talk to. He knows a lot
about football. At the back of the photo, on the left, are my grandparents. My grandma is 65
and my grandpa’s over 70, but very fit and well. We often go for long walks together and
they’re both good tennis players. I’ve got two brothers and a sister. That’s Fabian, Hamish
and Rachel. They’re sitting at the front with Alan. He’s my cousin from America. He’s a
student at university in England this year. And look, at the back of the photo on the right is
my best friend, Antonia, with her husband, James. She’s really nice and very clever.
Exercise 10.
Samir: Hi, Amanda. Is now a good time to show me your photos from the summer or are you
working?
Amanda: I’m working, but I’m happy to take a break for ten or fifteen minutes. Would you
like a coffee?
Samir: Yes, a coffee would be great.
Amanda: OK. Let me show you the photos, then. This is a photo of me and my brothers and
sisters. We’re on the beach.
Samir: Wow, there are seven of you! You’re a really big family.
Amanda: Yes, I’ve got three sisters and three brothers. My oldest sister is 32 and my two
youngest brothers are 8. No, sorry, they’re 9 now.

Exercise 3: Read the letter from Rachel to her pen friend Susie. Then complete the
exercise.
Dear Susie,
Thank you for your letter. I’m writing to tell you about the sports I enjoy doing. I like
playing tennis and swimming, but my favorite sport is cycling. I got my first bike when I
was 8, and I started cycling to school with my sister, Helen, when I was 12. Now my sister
goes to a different school, so I ride to school with my friend Laura. At the weekend, I often
go cycling in the countryside with my parents and Helen. We cycle all day and take a picnic
for lunch. We go cycling in winter and summer, but I prefer cycling in winter because the
countryside looks pretty. I like taking photos on my phone of the trees and animals.
I also go on cycling holidays with my family. We usually go to the north of England, but
last summer, we went to the mountains in the south of Spain. We all enjoyed cycling in the
day and going to restaurants in the evenings. It was sometimes difficult to cycle in Spain.
It was not difficult to cycle in the mountains because we had mountain bikes, but the
weather was very hot, so we got quite tired. I would like to go cycling in Spain again next
summer, but my parents want to go cycling in Scotland.
I also cycle for my school team. My friend Laura joined the team two years ago, and I joined
last year. We race against cyclists from other schools. Last year, I won second prize in the
10 km race. I was really happy, but next year I will try to win first prize.
In your next letter, please tell me about the sports you like. What is your favorite sport? Are
you in a team?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Rachel

television, but he learned how to cook from his father who was a chef in a local Italian
restaurant. His father says that Adam is now the best cook in the family. In the past, Adam’s
father did all the cooking for the family, but now Adam cooks most of the family meals.
His parents love Adam’s cooking, and even his younger sister Sarah eats most of the food
he cooks.
Adam likes cooking food from all over the world, but especially Italian, Indian and Thai
food. Last year, he went on holiday to India and Thailand with his family, and he enjoyed
trying all of the different dishes. Next year, he is going to travel to China and learn how to
cook Chinese food. Adam also likes computers and has his own website called ‘Cook with
Adam’. He first made the website as part of a school project, but now he uses it to tell
people about his cooking and to teach young people how to cook. It has easy food recipes,
photos of his food and videos to show people how to cook his favorite meals. The website
is very popular with young people, and Adam hopes that it will make them more interested

doesn’t want him to be too tired for school.
Adam recently won the first prize in a cooking competition for young people in the UK. He
made a chicken curry with rice and vegetables and a chocolate and raspberry dessert. He
was very surprised to be in the final part of the competition, and he couldn’t believe it when
he won first prize. He won £500 and a cooking lesson with a famous TV chef. Adam’s
whole family were very happy that he won the competition, especially his father. After the
competition, he appeared on a television news show and a cookery show. In the future,

Susan: I’m fine, thanks. And how are you? How’s your holiday?
Peter: It’s fantastic. I’m having a wonderful time! I’m staying with my friends at a guest
house – it’s close to the activity center and it’s cheaper than a hotel. It’s comfortable, but the
food’s not very good! But the staff are very friendly!
Susan: And what about the activities?
Peter: Every morning, we get up early and we usually go to the center. John and Steven are

chef, they’re preparing a picnic because we’re going hiking later. At the moment, I’m resting
because I’m exhausted.
Susan: Why are you so tired?
Peter: There are so many activities and I’m doing lots of them, I’m sleeping ten hours a night
but the activities are hard work and I’m not really fit! I’m sailing, I’m canoeing …
Susan: So the center is close to the sea?
Peter: It’s not close to the sea, but there’s a lake nearby, where we go sailing and canoeing,
and there’s a big river about twenty kilometers away where we go white water rafting.
Susan: White water rafting! Are you going white water rafting?
Peter: Well, we’ve been once. It’s scary, but we enjoyed it. We’re going again tomorrow.
Susan: And what other things are there?
Peter: There’s cycling too, but we’re not going cycling; we like it, but we can do it at home.
But there’s mountain climbing and we definitely want to do that.
Susan: Isn’t that dangerous?
Peter: Yes, but the guides look after us really well. And what are you doing, Susan?

Dear Adam,
Hello from Coconut Island! I am having a brilliant time relaxing on the beach with my aunt
and uncle and my brother. It’s a shame that my parents aren’t here – they had to stay at
home and work. The beach has beautiful white sand, palm trees and clear blue water. I went
swimming this morning, and the water was lovely. It wasn’t too cold. There are a lot of
different activities to do on the beach. Yesterday morning me and my brother tried surfing.
He was much better than me, but I still enjoyed it. My favorite activity was the boat trip
yesterday afternoon. We saw dolphins and a lot of colorful fish. Yesterday evening, we had
dinner in a restaurant next to the beach and ate fish. I usually don’t like fish, but the food at
the restaurant was delicious!
See you next week.
Best wishes,
Tom

paragraphs A–E.

What is Tivoli Gardens?

Why is it so popular?
A _____________________
Tivoli Gardens is a fun park in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark. The park was built
a very long time ago in 1843. In the past, Tivoli Gardens had many famous visitors, including
the Danish children’s writer Hans Christian Andersen and the American filmmaker Walt
Disney. Today, the fun park is still one of the most popular places for tourists to visit in
Copenhagen and people who are both young and old enjoy visiting the park every day of
year.
B _____________________
There are a lot of popular things to do for tourists to Tivoli Gardens. It is most famous for its
rides. The oldest ride in the park was built in 1914, and people can still ride on it today. One
quite scary ride is called ‘vertigo’ and it travels at 100 km per hour. This ride won the prize
for the Best Ride of 2014. There are also many restaurants, where people can eat food from
all over world. There are many old buildings and the beautiful gardens are a very good place
to relax.

PRE-IELTS
C _____________________
Many people ask the same question about Tivoli Gardens – how does it still get so many
visitors after all these years? One reason why so many people love Tivoli Gardens is because
there is something there for everyone. Some of riders are old, and others are new. Some
riders are scary and other are relaxing. The rides are not just popular with children. Adults
enjoy them too because they make them think about when they were young. Is has beautiful
buildings and gardens, and colored lights at night time, so people feel relaxed and happy.
D _____________________
Tivoli Gardens is open all year, and there are different things to see and do all year round. In
spring, visitors can enjoy the beautiful flowers in the gardens. In summer, the park is open
until late, and there are dance shows. There are pumpkins, spiders and witches for Halloween,
and in winter there are many colored lights on the trees and a market. It is a popular place to
go celebrate the New Year, when there are fireworks at midnight.
E _____________________
There are two different types of ticket that visitors can buy to visit Tivoli Gardens. They can
pay to enter the gardens and pay for rides later, or they can pay a little more for a ticket which
includes as many rides as they like. This is generally the best ticket to choose, as it saves
spending a lot of extra money on rides. If guests have a Copenhagen visitor card, they can
enter the Garden for free. People can buy tickets at the gardens or on the internet.

The food in Turkey is very good, especially the fish and the mezze, and I like to try traditional
dishes when I’m on holiday. And there are lots of traditional dishes in the different parts of the
country.
I went to Morocco last year for the first time for three years. In the past, I went more often. It’s
a beautiful country, but the main reason was that my grandmother lives there.
When I was a child, we went to Italy quite often and stayed in a hotel by the sea. But two years
ago I went to study. I’m an art student and with so many famous painters, Italy’s a fantastic
country to study Art History.
The weather in Thailand is fantastic! At least on the islands and parts of the coast, and that’s
great for me, because my favorite type of holiday is just being on the beach, and swimming in
the sea.
The first time I went to Russia, I visited the famous art galleries in St Petersburg. But this year
I went to Moscow on a language exchange and stayed with a host family. My Russian is much
better now!
A lot of people don’t know that Spain has lots of mountains. It’s not just a place to go for a
beach holiday, or to eat traditional food or go to museums. It’s one of the best places in Europe
for mountain climbing. I went there about five years ago.
Exercise 4
I like all kinds of holidays. Usually, I go on long beach holidays with my friends, and two years
ago we went on an adventure holiday. Another time we went on a sailing holiday. But last
year we had less time, so we decided to go on a short city break. It was more expensive than a
beach holiday, but we had a wonderful time.
We went to Paris. We couldn’t afford a hotel so we thought about staying with a host family,
but then we decided to stay in a small guesthouse. It was very comfortable, but it was a long
way from the city centre. We chose it because it was cheap. And the public transport in Paris
is good, so we moved around very easily.
133
PRE-IELTS
On the first day we went to the center and visited the Louvre museum. We waited for over an
hour to buy tickets and there were lots of people, but we really enjoyed looking at all the famous
paintings. We wanted to visit the Pompidou Centre too, but we didn’t have time because there’s
so much to see in the Louvre. In the evening, we thought about going to the Eifel Tower, but
we were too tired! So we went there – and to the Pompidou Centre – on the second day. And
in the evening we went to a typical restaurant as we wanted to try some traditional French food.
It wasn’t very expensive and I liked the food. It was delicious! And the service was very good
too.
On the final day, we went on a day trip to visit the Palace of Versailles, near Paris. We thought
about hiring a car, but as it was too expensive, we went by train. It was quicker than the bus.
The palace is very famous and it’s quite beautiful. There are wonderful gardens where we
walked and relaxed in the sunshine and rode bicycles around the fountains.
Our holiday was a very short, city break so on the fourth day we travelled home. For me, this
was a very different holiday, but it was one of the best holidays I’ve had because I visited so
many famous places for the first time. Paris is an expensive city, and like most big cities it isn’t
very clean, but it is a great place for a city break.

Dear Alessandro,
Thank you for your email. You asked me to tell you about the food in the UK. Some people
think that British people eat unhealthy, fried/ heat food like fish and chips all the time.
However, this is not true. A lot of British people prefer to eat food from other countries.
Chinese and Indian food is very like/ popular in the UK. Many people eat Chinese or Indian
food at the weekend, and some people cook it at home. I like Indian food a lot and think
that it is very boring/ tasty, but some dishes with a lot of chili are a bit too spicy for me.
Many people also think that British people have afternoon tea every day at 4:00 p.m. This
is also not true! People sometimes have afternoon tea with sandwiches and spicy/ sweet
foods like cakes, but only on special occasions.
You also asked me about what food I like. My favorite/ popular dish from my country is
called Shepherd’s Pie. It is a cold/ hot dish made of meat and vegetables and potato, which
is cooked in the oven. It tastes really good. I usually eat it with a lot of fresh vegetables like
peas or cabbage, so it is quite a fat/ healthy dish. My mum usually cooks it for me and my
brother when we come home from university. I like to eat Shepherd’s Pie in the winter

Richard
Exercise 3: Read the email from Jenny to her friend, Karen. Then complete the exercise.
Hi Karen,
I hope that you are enjoying your summer holiday in France with your famlily. I’m having a
great time on the school exchange in Turkey. I am staying with a nice girl called Alev She
is very friendly and funny, and her parents are very kind. They cook for me every day. I
didn’t know very much about Turkish food before I came here, but everything is delicious.
In the morning we have a big breakfast with bread eggs, cheese and jam. It is quite simlilar
to breakfast in the UK. For lunch, we usually have a lot small dishes. My favorite Turkish
foods are borek, a dish with cheese and potatoes, and dolma, a vegetable and rice dish. I also
tried an interesting drink made from youghurt called ayran. I didn’t like it very much, but
Alev’s mother says that it is a very healthy so I drank it all. For dinner last night, we went to
a traditional Turkish restaurant and had a kebab, which is the most famous dish in Turkey.
It was delicious. After dinner we had coffee. The waiter also gave us baklava, which are
small sweet cakes made of honey. I am going to bring some home so that you can try them.
I know that you love sweet things!
See you soon at school.
Best whishes,
Jenny

Exercise 4: Read the magazine article about street food. Then complete the exercise.
One of the most popular activities that people do when they go on holiday to another country
is to try the local food. However, eating dinner in a restaurant every night can be expensive,
and many people find the restaurants they choose are full of tourists and not many local people.
A much better way to try local food is to eat ‘street food’, food made and sold not in a
restaurant, but on the street, from a ‘stall’ or large table. It is often very tasty and you can try
many different small dishes. It’s also cheaper than eating in restaurants. Different countries
have their own famous types of street food. France is famous for baguettes, which are a type
of French bread filled with cheese or meat with salad. You can buy baguettes from stalls on
the street in many French cities. In Italy, there are slices of pizza, and arancini which are fried
balls of rice with cheese, meat or vegetables inside. The name arancini means ‘oranges’ in
Italian. Mexico has tacos, a dish with spicy beans and meat. Eating street food is also a great

A Japan
Japanese food is fresh, healthy and tasty. It includes a lot of fish, vegetables, tofu and rice.
Typical dishes are ramen, a type of soup with noodles and vegetables or seafood, and curries
with chicken or tofu. Japanese people usually eat small amounts of food. They also like to eat
their food very slowly and this stops them from eating too much. For this reason, Japanese

people are among the healthiest people in the world and do not get ill very often. Japanese
people do not eat a lot of sweet dishes, but they enjoy eating fruit and small cakes
called dorayaki. To celebrate the new year, Japanese people often eat cakes made of rice, and
a special soup called ozoni.
B Italy
When many people think of Italian food, they think of delicious but not very healthy
food like pasta with meat sauces, lots of cheese, and, of course, pizza. However, Italians
don’t eat these dishes every day. They eat a lot of healthy foods, including vegetables,
tomatoes and olive oil. A typical Italian meal usually includes several different small dishes.
Italians stay healthy by eating a lot of vegetables and only a little meat. Lunch is the main
meal of the day and Italians like to have long lunches at home. Sometimes Italians will get
together with their friends and family in the evening and go to a pizzeria to eat pizza. After
dinner, they might have a gelato, a type of Italian ice cream, which has many delicious
flavors.
C China
Chinese people eat a lot of vegetables, which are usually steamed or fried. They eat some
meat and fish, but usually not very much, and often on special occasions. Rice, noodles and
dumplings are popular Chinese dishes. A lot of Chinese dishes use garlic and ginger, which
are tasty and are good for the stomach. Green tea is a popular drink in China, and many
people believe that it helps them to stay healthy. China has many festivals, and people often
eat special food during these times. People eat dumplings to celebrate Chinese New Year, and
for the Autumn Festival people eat special cakes called moon cakes. Festivals are often
special times for families to get together and eat delicious food.
D Poland
Polish people like to eat food that keeps them warm in winter. Soup, meat and small
dumplings called pierogi are all popular dishes. Pierogi can be sweet or savory. Polish dishes
are usually served with vegetables, especially carrots, potatoes and cabbage. Polish people
also like sweet dishes, especially cakes. Cheesecake and doughnuts are popular for dessert,
and people make special cakes for weddings and festivals. Polish people usually eat four
small meals a day. They eat the main meal of the day in the afternoon, usually at about 2:00
p.m. This meal usually has three dishes, a soup, a meat dish and a dessert. In December,
Polish people eat a special meal to celebrate Christmas, which includes 12 different dishes!

A Thank you for your email. You asked me to tell you about the food in the UK. Some
people think that British people eat unhealthy, fried food like fish and chips all the time.
However, this is not true. A lot of British people prefer to eat food from other countries.
Chinese and Indian food is very popular in the UK. Many people eat Chinese or Indian food
at the weekend, and some people cook it at home. I like Indian food a lot and think that it is
very tasty, but some dishes with a lot of chilli are a bit too spicy for me. Many people also
think that British people have afternoon tea every day at 4:00 p.m. This is also not true!
People sometimes have afternoon tea with sandwiches and sweet foods like cakes, but only
on special occasions.

B You also asked me about what food I like. My favorite dish from my country is called
Shepherd’s Pie. It is a hot dish made of meat and vegetables and potato, which is cooked in
the oven. It tastes really good. I usually eat it with a lot of fresh vegetables like peas or
cabbage, so it is quite a healthy dish. My mum usually cooks it for me and my brother when
we come home from university. I like to eat Shepherd’s Pie in the winter when it is cold,
because it makes me feel warm. My favorite sweet dish is apple pie which is baked. Many
people believe that British food is not so tasty, but I think we have some delicious dishes.

Exercise 5.
Paella is one of the most famous dishes from Spain. It comes from Valencia in the south east
of the country. The main ingredient is rice. Rice grows in the Valencia area. Traditional paella
is made with rabbit, but now most people make it with chicken and seafood.
I love paella because it makes me think of home and the sun and the sea! And it’s a wonderful
dish to share with family and friends. It’s not a dish to eat alone!
It’s quite a cheap dish to make. These are the ingredients you need: chicken, seafood – prawns
and squid for example – oil, onions, peppers, tomatoes, green beans, garlic, and saffron, which
is a very expensive ingredient that gives the dish flavor and a beautiful golden color – you only
need a very small bit. You also need to add a little salt, and stock, which is a kind of sauce that
is flavored with chicken and vegetables. And of course, most importantly, you need some rice.
You also need a special, wide pan, for making the paella.
First, cut the chicken into pieces and chop the onions, peppers, tomatoes and garlic. Heat the
oil in the pan and when it’s hot, add the chicken pieces. Fry the chicken for a few minutes until
the pieces are golden brown, then add the onions, peppers, tomatoes and garlic and fry all the
ingredients for a few more minutes. Next add the saffron, the rice and the salt and mix
everything together. When the stock boils, cook slowly until the chicken and the rice are nearly
done, then add the seafood and the green beans; you may need a little more stock. Cook for a
few more minutes and finally, taste and add more salt if you wish. But not too much! Enjoy!
Exercise 9.
Presenter: Good morning. I’m Jane Wilson. Welcome to Radio Brighton. A number of
people have already phoned in to our program about jobs. So let’s make a start. The first
person waiting to speak is Hamish. Hi, Hamish.
Hamish: Hello, Jane.
Presenter: Can you tell us a few things about yourself, Hamish?
Hamish: Yeah, I’m 18 years old and I’m still at school.
Presenter: OK, so what subjects are you doing?
Hamish: Maths, science and technology.
Presenter: And are you a serious student? I mean, do you usually get good marks for
homework and in tests?
154
PRE-IELTS
Hamish: Yes, I do. I normally get As or Bs in exams. I really like these subjects and work
hard.
Presenter: What do you want to study at university, Hamish?
Hamish: I don’t want to go to university. I want to get a job after school.
Presenter: It’s hard to get a good job nowadays if you don’t go to university, Hamish.
Hamish: Yes, I know, but I want to get a job and earn some money. Have you got any ideas
to help me find a job?
Presenter: Have you already had any jobs at the weekend or in the holidays?
Hamish: Yes, I’ve done several Saturday jobs. I’ve worked in a shop as a sales assistant, for
example, and I’ve also worked as a waiter in an Italian restaurant. At the moment, I’m
working in my uncle’s computer shop.
Presenter: That’s interesting. So, what are you doing there?
Hamish: I do some of the simple repairs to computers. My uncle tells me or shows me what
to do and I do it. I really like the work.
Presenter: Well, Hamish, I think my advice to you is to continue working there after school.
I think that will be perfect for you and for your future.
Hamish: Thanks, Jane. That was helpful.
Presenter: You’re welcome. And now let’s hear from the next person waiting to speak. Hi
there, Andrea …
