NOTE For Conventions, Symbols and Costumer Communications, please refer to the TRACE GC Ultra Operating Manual. Introduction The FID tandem option (stacked configuration) is particularly useful for confirmation type analyses, permitting collection of two detector signals originated from the same injection. A particular zero dead volume heated adapter allows for correct sample transfer from the ECD to the FID avoiding any condensation and peak broadering. The upgrade kit contains all the material required to install the FID detector in series with the ECD detector: • FID Assembly for TRACE • FID Control Card • FID Standard Outfit • Heater Adapter • DGFC Module for FID The FID must be installed and configured as auxiliary detector. Who Performs the Installation of the Kit If, for any reason, the kit is not installed by Thermo Fisher Scientific technical personnel, you must carefully adhere to the following instructions. 6 Installation Guide Upgrade Kit FID Tandem Detector Introduction Detector Gases Requirements This paragraph details the detector gases requirements for FID. FID Detector Gases In FID tandem (stacked) configuration the FID only requires air and hydrogen as fuel gases to supply the flame. The connections of the detector gases must be performed as described in the following table: DGFC Module Connect Hydrogen to Connect Air to AB Gas 2 Gas 1 For further details, refer to Chapters 16 and 17 of the TRACE GC Ultra Operating Manual. Transformer for FID NOTE Installation Guide If your GC has serial number lower than 983808 (Milan) or TR101089 (Austin), the installation of a dedicated transformer might be necessary. Please contact us for details. 7 Upgrade Kit FID Tandem Detector Getting Started Getting Started This paragraph contains the instruction to install the FID in series with the ECD. Before starting, the following preliminary operations must be carried out: 1. Cool the oven and detector base body to room temperature. 2. Close the gas supplies. 3. Turn off the main power on the rear panel of the GC. 4. Disconnect the main power cable from the rear of the GC. To properly install the FID tandem upgrade kit, the following sequential operations must be performed: 8 • Remove the top and right side panels of the GC. • Mount the DGFC for FID into the GC pneumatic compartment. • Install the detector control card into the GC electronic compartment (control unit). • Remount GC panels. • Mount the FID on the ECD. • Restart the GC. • Configure the detector. Installation Guide Upgrade Kit FID Tandem Detector Getting Started OPERATING SEQUENCE Installing FID Tandem Upgrade Kit Follow this instruction to properly install the FID Tandem Upgrade Kit. Installation Guide 25 Upgrade Kit FID Tandem Detector Configuration Configuration This paragraph contains the instructions to configure your GC to operate with FID in series with the ECD. You configure FID as auxiliary detector in the CONFIGURE menu. Refer to Chapter 16 of the TRACE GC Ultra Operating manual. NOTE The Auxiliary detector item will only be present in the CONFIGURE menu if your TRACE GC system has been pre-configured at the factory for an auxiliary detector. If not, Aux Detector must be enabled Y (yes) in the Hidden Configuration. OPERATING SEQUENCE Configuring the FID Detector 1. Press CONFIG then scroll to Aux detector. Press ENTER to open the detector menu. AUX DETECTOR Detector type Makeup gas < 1 1. No selection is available for this option (in case of using DGFC type AB). 2. Select Detector type. This line indicates the type of detector mounted and the slot (A, B or C) of the relevant control board. Press ENTER to display the relevant submenu. DETECTOR TYPE ECD-A *FID-C < None 3. Scroll to FID-C and press ENTER to confirm the selection. An asterisk appears besides the detector selected. 26 Installation Guide Upgrade Kit FID Tandem Detector Set FID Parameters Set FID Parameters To set FID parameters, it is necessary to open the AUX menu and the AUX Signal menu. • The AUX DETECTOR (FID) menu contains the control parameters for the FID. To set parameters, refer to the Chapter 17 of the TRACE GC Ultra Operating Manual. • The AUX SIGNAL (FID) menu contains the parameters that control the FID detector signal. To set parameters, refer to the Chapter 16 of the TRACE GC Ultra Operating Manual. OPERATING SEQUENCE FID Parameters Setting This operating sequence contains an example of parameters setting for the FID configured as auxiliary detector. 1. To open FID menu, press AUX DETECTOR The following menu is displayed: AUX DETECTOR (FID) Flame Off Base temp 250 Signal pA1 Ign.thresh1 Flameout retry H2 Air 250 (5.5) 2.0 1 Off 35 350 35 350< 1. This parameter lines will be displayed according to the Range parameter in the AUX SIGNAL menu. See Range Parameter on page 28. 2. To open AUX Signal menu, press AUX SIGNAL. The following menu is displayed: Installation Guide 27 Upgrade Kit FID Tandem Detector Set FID Parameters AUX SIGNAL (FID) Output (1000) Offset 100 Auto zero? Y/N Range 10^(0..3) 0< Analog filter Off Baseline Comp Off Range Parameter The Range 10^ parameter is an input attenuation value. It is set from 0 (high sensitivity) to 3 (low sensitivity). The dynamic of the FID card is as follows: Range Input Signal Output Signal 0 1 nA 1 Volt 1 10 nA 1 Volt 2 100 nA 1 Volt 3 1 μA 1 Volt This means that if we have a small variation (in pA) of the baseline value when the Range 10^ is set 0 or 1, the input amplifier circuit of FID card can read it, and, according with threshold value set, can qualify the Flameout retry (if it is set ON). If the Range 10^ is set 2 or 3, the small variation (in pA) of the baseline is not detected from the FID card. For this reason, when the Range 10^ is set 2 or 3, the Signal pA, Ign. thresh and Flameout retry parameters will be not displayed in the AUX DETECTOR (FID) menu. 28 Installation Guide
